In 1916, The Proclamation declared the birth of a nation, where all its children would be ‘cherished equally’. #ProclaimAgain2016,will see this vision, and the legacy of the Rising, commemorated in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary from 20th – 22nd May, and a new proclamation re-imaged for our society in 2016.
In what will be a weekend of conversations, a host of international and local speakers will be welcomed to the Nenagh Arts Centre to include commentators and social activists Fr. Peter McVerry; Dr. Tom Clonan and Noel Whelan. Historians Philip Orr and Brian Hanley and academics Prof. Peader Kirby and Dr. Mary P. Murphy also join the event once again.
The third annual ‘Nenagh Risings’ initiative is also pleased to announce Professor Philip Pettit as keynote speaker on Sunday, 22nd May. Raised in Ireland, Professor Pettit is a world-renowned moral and political philosopher, and holds distinguished positions at Princeton University and the Australian National University.
In his latest book, “Just Freedom: A Moral Compass For a Complex World”, Professor Pettit examines civic republicanism and champions a simple standard of justice and freedom for our most complex political judgments. He offers a real, yet challenging, prospect for social and democratic progress, and sets out a re-imagining of our social arrangements.
Professor Pettit will be joined at the Sunday session by Niamh Hourigan of University College, Cork, whose latest book "Rule Breakers – Why ‘being there’ beats ‘being fair’ in Ireland" is an insightful examination of Irish political culture.
A special literary event of ‘Readings from the Rising’ will also be hosted upstairs at County Choice café on Saturday 21st at 11am.
The ‘Nenagh Risings’ initiative was founded by Gerry Coffey and Kathleen O'Meara and is the third in a series of events to mark the decade of commemorations. Previous events included From Lockout to Bailout 1913 – 2013; and The Unlearned Legacies of War 1914 – 2014.
