REMINDER FUNDRAISER AT CLONMEL RACES

Tipperary County GAA Board in conjunction with Powerstown Park, Clonmel are running a horse race meeting on Friday June 14 with the first race commencing at 5.45pm.  The proceeds will go towards preparing the Tipperary County teams for their upcoming championship games. General Admittance for advance ticket purchasers is €10 with barbecue food available on the night for €9. It’s €15 entry for people with no ticket purchased in advance. There is a Prize Draw of 2 All Ireland tickets for people who buy a €10 ticket. It is hoped that clubs or pubs could organise a bus to get people to the race track as this is going to be a massive social event with barbecues, bouncing castles etc with plenty of entertainment for all ages. The North division are organizing buses to carry punters to the event (contact Tim Floyd, secretary.tipperary@gaa.ie for details).


TIPPERARY V LIMERICK SENIOR HURLING

Tipperary were defeated by Limerick by 1-18 to 1-15 in the Munster senior hurling championship quarter final in Pairc na nGael Limerick yesterday. Limerick will now play Clare or Cork in the Munster final while Tipperary go the qualifier route.  They go straight to Phase 2 which is a round of 2 games drawn from the defeated provincial semi-finalists. The draw will be made live on RTE 1 just after the 8.30am News on Morning Ireland on Monday, June 24. The games will be played on Saturday July 6. The other teams in the draw will be the losers of Clare v Cork, the losers of Galway v Laois and the losers of Kilkenny v Dublin or Wexford.


MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Tipperary’s intermediate hurlers and management on qualifying for the Munster final by defeating Limerick by 0-20 to 0-15 on Sunday last in the curtain raiser at Pairc na nGael. They will play the winners of the Clare v Cork semi-final in the Munster final on July 18.


FOOTBALL QUALIFIER DRAW

The draws for the first round of the All Ireland senior football championship qualifiers will be made next Monday, June 17 live on RTE Radio 1 just after the 8.30am News on Morning Ireland. Tipperary and the other 15 teams which did not make their respective Provincial Semi-finals will be in the draw. The games will be played on Saturday June 29.


COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Round 1 of the county senior hurling championship takes place next weekend, June 15 and 16. The games and venues are: Saturday June 15 – Templemore at 6pm Roscrea v Cashel King Cormacs and at 7.30pm: Moneygall v Holycross Ballycahill; Boherlahan at 7.30pm: Carrick Davins v Burgess; Toomevara at 8pm: Kilruane MacDonaghs v Borrisokane; Sunday June 16 – Moneygall at 12noon: Lorrha and Dorrha v JK Brackens; Borrisoleigh at 12 noon – Portroe v Golden Kilfeacle; The Ragg at 6pm: Boherlahan Dualla v Templederry Kenyons and at 7.30pm Thurles Sarsfields v Nenagh Éire Óg.

The winners of the round 1 games plus the 8 losing teams from this weekend’s divisional senior hurling semi-finals will go into round 2 of the county senior hurling championship draw. Teams which met previously will not be drawn against each other if possible. The round 2 games are scheduled to be played on the weekend of June 22nd and 23rd and the draw will be made by or on this coming Monday, June 17.


CLUB GAMES ADMISSION PRICES TICKET PACKAGES

We have 14 championship games in senior and intermediate hurling and senior football next weekend June 15 and 16. The admission prices for single senior hurling and football championship games are €8 and €5 for OAPs and students with id. For the hurling double headers it’s €10 and €5. A weekend package at €20 and €10 for OAPs and students with id will be available. They will be available to purchase from gate checkers at each venue or from Lar na Pairce if people want to purchase tickets in advance (please call 0504 22702 for details).


COUNTY CHALLENGE CUPS

We have reached the finals of the county senior hurling challenge cup in the four groups.  The following are the teams that will play the finals: 1) Johnny Ryan Cup Final - Upperchurch Drombane v Portroe; 2) Jim Devitt Cup Final - Silvermines v Drom and Inch; 3) Dr Fogarty Cup Final - Nenagh Éire Óg v Burgess; 4) James Holohan Memorial Cup Final – Roscrea v Lorrha Dorrha.


TIPPERARY GAA GATHERING EVENT

Tipperary GAA’s Gathering events took place last weekend in Bru Boru, Cashel and after the games in Limerick on Sunday. On Saturday night in Bru Boru a marvellous night of Irish music, song, dance and recitation was viewed by a large attendance. Congratulations to all the participants for their excellent performances and to all the organisers including County Cultural Officer, Seosaimhín Níi Chathail, County Scor Chairperson, Noel Joyce and Secretary, Mary Bourke; County Secretary, Tim Floyd and event co-ordinator, Michael Cooney and all who helped make the event a such a success. We are particularly grateful to all the overseas visitors from the USA, Canada, Australia, Great Britain and other places who came to the events. We hope they enjoyed their visits. Thanks are due to Irish Public Bodies Insurance for their sponsorship of the events, to Cllr Michael Fitzgerald who is one of the directors of IPB Insurance for his support, also to South Tipperary County Council’s Gathering Committee, and Tipp GAA’s Gathering Committee chaired by Joe Brennan with Jerry Ring as secretary.


COUNTY POC FADA FINAL

The County Finals of the Under 16 and Senior Poc Fada took place on Saturday last June 8. Six competitors assembled in Lisvernane and made the trek up the Galtee Mountains where the course was laid out on the foot of Galtee Mór. Conditions were perfect for the event with no wind and beautiful sunshine for competitors and supporters to enjoy. The three Senior competitors were Gordon Peters, representing the host club Aherlow, Shane Hassett represented Drom and Inch and the eventual winner Darren Cuddihy representing Toomevara.  The Under 16 competitors were Ciaran Thorpe of Drom and Inch, Paul Carroll of Burgess and Shane Stapleton of Sean Treacys. The senior course was 3km long and from the start a keen contest ensued. The course demanded not only the ability to puck as long as possible but also the ability to plot a route and place the puck. Ravines, streams and dykes were dotted along the course and this mixed with the underfoot conditions made it a test of strength and endurance as well. The senior competition became a two horse race between Darren and Shane after Gordon paid a couple of visits to the aforementioned ravines. Darren eventually got the better of Shane crossing the line with an impressive 29 pucks, one better then Shane. Darren had been very competitive throughout with his planning and decision making and was a worthy winner. The Under 16 was also well contested with all three competitors in it to the last puck. Over a shortened course the players traded blow for blow with Shane Stapleton coming out on top with 25 pucks. Second went to Paul Carroll and Ciaran Thorpe came in third. County Final medals were presented to the winners by John Smith, County Coaching Officer, while each contestant received a runners up prize. John congratulated all the contestants and thanked them for their efforts. He also expressed the hope of a better turn out of players for next year’s competition which will be held using the same format. Finally, a special word of thanks is due to the Aherlow club for their assistance with the event and in particular, Pat and Michael Moroney, who were responsible for laying out the course. Signage was in place on roads leading to the event location, which proved very beneficial. Refreshments were also provided at the finish line for all involved.
