MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINAL
Congratulations to the Tipperary Intermediate hurlers and team management on their one point victory by 0-19 to 0-18 against Cork in a tense and close Munster Intermediate hurling final at Semple Stadium on Friday evening last. It was Tipperary’s 9th Intermediate Munster title and the first time the county retained the title. A feature of the game was the 3 point tally from long range frees by goalkeeper, Darragh Egan. Details of the next fixture in the competition are still awaited.
BORD GAIS ENERGY MUNSTER UNDER 21 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Well done to the Tipperary under 21 hurlers and management on their impressive victory by 5-19 to 2-13 over Cork in the Bord Gais Energy Munster under 21 hurling semi-final at Semple Stadium on Wednesday evening last. The surprisingly large margin of victory certainly goes against a history of much closer encounters between these old rivals. Prior to last Wednesday night’s game there had been 32 previous games between them in which Tipp scored 62-404 for an average of 18.44 points per game. Cork had scored 69-378 for an average of 18.28 points per game. No wonder captain, Niall O’ Meara in his match programme interview thought there would only be a puck of a ball between the teams! Last week’s victory was Tipp’s second biggest win over Cork with the biggest coming way back in 1964, the inaugural year of the competition, when the score was 6-9 to 1-1 at Sean Treacy Park in Tipperary Town. Cork's biggest win over Tipp us was at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in the Munster Final on August 23 1998 on a scoreline of Cork 3-18 Tipperary 1-10.
Tipperary will play Clare in the final for the second year in succession. The game is currently fixed for Semple Stadium on Wednesday August 7 but the date may change given Clare’s involvement in the All Ireland senior hurling championship. It will probably be early next week before the fixture details are fully confirmed.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
The Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling championship round 3 game between Nenagh Eire Og and Upperchurch Drombane will be played this Saturday evening at Templemore at 7.30pm with extra time to be played in the event of a draw. The other 3 games in the Round 3 are all fixed for Sunday August 4. However, those games which have county under 21 hurling players involved (all 3 games would be affected if playing panel is same as for semi-final), may go back to Sunday August 11 if the Munster under 21 hurling final goes ahead on Wednesday August 7. These fixtures will be reviewed next week once the date for the Munster under 21 final is confirmed.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING COUNTY SENIOR HURLING RELEGATION
The Clean Ireland Recycling senior hurling relegation semi-final replay between Boherlahan Dualla and Golden Kilfeacle will be played at New Inn on Friday July 27 at 7.30pm with extra time to be played in the event of a draw. The losers will play Cashel King Cormacs in the final so a local derby is guaranteed irrespective of Friday night’s result.
SEAMUS O RIAIN CUP SEMI-FINALS
The Seamus O Riain Cup senior hurling semi-final between Borrisokane and Thurles Sarsfields will be played at Templemore on Friday evening July 27 at 7.15pm with extra time in the event of a draw. The winners will play Carrick Davins in the final. Davins had a 3-18 to 2-14 victory over Lorrha and Dorrha in the other semi-final last weekend.
DIVISIONAL SENIOR HURLING FINALS
There are 2 divisional senior hurling finals fixed for this coming weekend. On Saturday July 27 at 7.30pm at Clonmel Sprotsfield the South Tipperary final will be played between Carrick Swans and Killenaule. The game will be refereed by Keith Delahunty. The North Tipperary final will be played on Sunday evening July 28 at 7pm in Nenagh between Silvermines and Kildangan with Philip Kelly in charge of the whistle. We wish both Boards, the teams and match officials all the best for the premier hurling event in their annual match calendar.
BUSY SUNDAY FOR SEMPLE STADIUM
Semple Stadium will be a busy place on Sunday next July 27 with 3 games to be played. At 12.15pm Galway will play Laois in the Electric Ireland All Ireland minor hurling championship quarter final. At 2pm, Cork will play Kilkenny in the first All Ireland SHC quarter final with Galway playing Clare in the second quarter final at 4pm. Tickets are available on gaa.tickets.ie. A limited number of tickets of average quality are also available through divisions and clubs - prices are €30 adult stand and €5 for accompanying juveniles in a family ticket. Terrace tickets cost €20.
COUNTY BOARD MEETING
Tipperary County Board will hold its July County Committee Meeting on Tuesday July 30 at 8.30pm at the Sarsfields Centre in Thurles. All club delegates are asked to attend.
COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES
In the county senior football championship the following is a summary of the current leading table positions in the 4 groups: Group 1: Galtee Rovers lead with 6 points from 3 games followed by Eire Og Annacarty Donohill with 4 points from 3 games; Group 2: Aherlow Gaels lead with 6 points from 3 games followed by Arravale Rovers with 4 points from 2 games and Moyne Templetuohy with 4 points from 4 games; Group 3: Loughmore Castleiney lead with 6 points from 3 games followed by Kilsheelan Kilcash with 5 points from 3 games; Group 4: Moyle Rovers lead with 6 points from 3 games followed by Thomas MacDonagh’s with 4 points from 3 games. The full tables will be published on the Tipperary GAA website during the week.
HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW AND OUR LADY’S CRUMLIN FUNDRAISER
As a dramatic 2013 season draws to a conclusion, come along and hear the views of hurling legends DJ Carey (Kilkenny), Nicky English (Tipperary), Anthony Daly (Clare and current Dublin manager), John Mullane (Waterford) and Conor Hayes (Galway) at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh on Friday evening, August 23. The event gets underway at 8pm and a raffle will take place at half-time for match tickets and signed jerseys, among other prizes. Tickets cost €10 and all proceeds will go towards local journalist Jackie Cahill’s fundraising drive for The Children's Medical and Research Foundation at Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin. Jackie is running the New York City Marathon on November 3 to raise money for CMRF. MC for the night is Sunday Independent GAA journalist Damian Lawlor, another native of Tipperary. Your attendance at this event would be most appreciated and all monies raised will go towards a very worthy cause. SYMPATHY
Tipperary County Board extends its sympathy to the family of the late Jim Madden of Portroe who died last week. Jim was a selector with the Tipperary Camogie team for their 3 in a row All Ireland victories from 1999 to 2001. His daughter Claire played on the great Tipperary team of that period. Jim also made a great contribution to his club, Portroe, in many different capacities and was a dedicated follower of hurling and camogie throughout his life. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal.
