SEAMUS O RIAIN CUP FINAL
Congratulations to Thurles Sarsfields on winning the Seamus O Riain Cup with a 3-18 to 1-13 victory over Carrick Davins on Sunday evening last at Clonmel Sportsfield. It is probably a unique double that the one club would win the Dan Breen Cup and Seamus O Riain Cup in successive years and who would rule out Sarsfields regaining Dan Breen in 2014?
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Toomevara’s 0-24 to 2-17 victory over Templederry Kenyons on Saturday evening secured them the final place in the Round 4 draw of the Clean Ireland Recycling County Senior Hurling championship. The draw resulted in the following pairings and fixtures: 1) Nenagh Éire Óg v Silvermines in Cloughjordan on Saturday August 24 at 6pm; 2) Roscrea v Loughmore Castleiney at Templemore on Saturday August 24 at 6pm; 3) Borris-Ileigh v Carrick Swan at Holycross on Saturday September 7 at 2.30pm and 4) Toomevara v Clonoulty Rossmore at Holycross on Saturday September 7 at 4.30pm. The four winners will qualify for the quarter finals against the Divisional champions – Kildangan, Drom and Inch, Killenaule and Éire Óg Annacarty Donohill.
GOLDEN KILFEACLE RELEGATED
Golden Kilfeacle will be relegated to Intermediate hurling for next year following their defeat by Cashel King Cormacs by 3-13 to 0-9 in the Clean Ireland Recycling senior hurling relegation final at New Inn on Sunday evening last. They will be replaced in senior ranks by this year’s county intermediate hurling champions. Next year 2 teams will be relegated to Intermediate with one coming up from Intermediate ranks.
JIM DEVITT CUP FINAL
In the County Senior Hurling challenge cups Jim Devitt Cup final Silvermines took the honours with a 1-13 to 1-10 victory over Drom and Inch in Dolla. Well done to the ‘Mines – this victory will be a boost as they prepare for their county SHC clash with Nenagh Eire Og.

As the group stages near completion Arravale Rovers, Éire Óg Annacarty Donohill, Kilsheelan Kilcash and Thomas MacDonaghs have qualified for the preliminary quarter finals while Aherlow Gaels, Clonmel Commercials, Loughmore Castleiney, and Moyle Rovers have qualified for the quarter finals. We now wait to see who comes through from the divisions and they will be drawn against the preliminary qualifiers in the preliminary quarter finals.
HURLING NIGHT WITH STARS IN AID OF CRUMLIN HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN
On Friday next, August 23, at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh, a ‘Hurling night with the stars’ will take place at 8pm. DJ Carey (Kilkenny), Anthony Daly (Clare & current Dublin manager), Nicky English (Tipperary), John Mullane (Waterford) and Conor Hayes (Galway) will take part in a Q & A session with members of the public, facilitated by Tipperary man Damian Lawlor from the Sunday Independent. It’s been a remarkable hurling summer by any stretch of the imagination and the expert views of the special guests will be worth listening to as they look ahead to the conclusion of the All-Ireland hurling championship. Entry to the event is €10, payable at the door, and at half-time a raffle will take place for some great prizes. This fundraising event is raising money for the ‘Fix Crumlin’ campaign at the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
THE LATE SAM MELBOURNE
We were all sorry to hear of the death of Sam Melbourne on Wednesday August aged 91. Sam was born in the great GAA parish of Moycarkey Borris in 1923. Sam played hurling in his youth and was on the Mid Tipperary minor hurling selection in 1940 and 41. Sam carved out a special niche for himself in GAA history by his collection of GAA memorabilia that is famous not alone nationally but much further afield. Sam commenced his collection in 1937 with a hurley he received from Johnny Ryan an All-Ireland medallist that year. The collection subsequently grew to over three hundred Hurley’s from former stars in every County in Ireland. His sports shop in Thurles in the fifties was a colourful place with photos, scrapbooks, newspaper cuttings and jerseys of former players attracting people from far and wide. Sam moved to Dublin in 1956 and from there he travelled the length and breadth of the Country displaying his vast collection of GAA memorabilia to clubs and communities and giving talks about his collection. When that was no longer possible Tipperary County Board purchased the collection in 1988 and the items are on display in Lár na Páirce while photos scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings are to be found in the Sports Section of Thurles Library for the pleasure of all to see. The GAA are indebted to Sam for his lifelong love and dedication to our great association and the fruits of his labour will continue to be enjoyed as future generations inspect his wide array of GAA memorabilia. Sam was Vice-President of the Moycarkey-Borris GAA Club at the time of his death. Our deepest sympathies to the Melbourne family. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam uasal.
NATHAN CARTER CONCERT
Tipperary GAA is delighted to present renowned country music star, Nathan Carter, in concert at the Clonmel Park Hotel on Saturday October 26. Special guests include Louise Morrissey and Marty Daniels. All proceeds will go towards preparation of Tipperary’s inter-county hurling and football teams for 2014. Doors will open at 7pm and tickets, which cost €25 each, are now available from the Clonmel Park Hotel and Lar an Pairce (0504 22702) in Thurles. Advance booking is recommended as tickets are selling fast.
TIPPERARY WIN NEW YORK SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Congratulations to the Tipperary Hurling Club in New York on winning the New York senior hurling championship by defeating Galway by 2-18 to 1-17 in Gaelic Park on Sunday last. Their victory brings a long spell of Offaly dominance in the championship to an end. The Tipperary team (13 a side) was: Craig Harford; Donagh Maher, Paul Shutte, Colm Forde, Padraic Maher, Francis Kennedy, David Tracey, Cian Maher, John Sheedy, Brian O'Meara, Shane Bourke, Paul Loughnane, Davie Loughnane. TIPPERARY SUPPORTERS CLUB ALL UNDER 16 TOURNAMENTS
The Tipperary Supporters Club sponsored All Ireland under 16 A and B tournaments will take place on August 31. The group games and finals will be played in the South Division this year. The A group games will be hosted by Cahir, Moyl Rovers and Clonmel Og with St. Mary’s hosting the finals. The B group games will be hosted by Fr. Sheehy’s and Ballylooby with the final in Ballylooby. The A groups are as follows: 1) Cork, Dublin, Clare and Waterford; 2) Offaly, Wexford, Limerick, Kilkenny; 3) Galway, Tipperary, Antrim and Laois. The B groups are as follows: 1) Clare, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Kerry; 2) Galway, Cork, Wexford and Waterford. The tournaments were previously played over 2 days but under a new directive, they must be played in one day so it will certainly be an action packed Saturday around South Tipperary. We wish Bord na nOg, the participating teams and the host clubs best wishes for fine weather, good hurling and exciting games. The Migraine Association of Ireland (MAI) will hold the first national seminar on 'Migraine and Sport' at the Anner Hotel in Thurles on Wednesday September 18 at 7.30pm. Dr Edward O' Sullivan, director of the Cork Migraine/Headache Clinic and medical advisor to the MAI will give a talk entitled 'Understanding Migraine in a Sporting Context'. Julie Sugrue, chartered physiotherapist at the Beaumont Hospital multidisciplinary headache clinic will discuss physiotherapy and headache management. Approximately half a million people in Ireland suffer from migraine and although sports and exercise can be of benefit to a migraine sufferer, they can also trigger migraine attacks in many people.
