TIPPERARY EXIT ALL IRELAND SHC
Tipperary have exited the 2013 senior hurling championship following the 0-20 to 1-14 defeat to Kilkenny at Nowlan Park on Saturday evening last. It was never going to be an easy challenge to face the All Ireland champions in a knockout game at their own grounds but the Tipperary players fought hard throughout in what was a titanic struggle to the bitter end. Tipperary County Board is very proud of their performance and is grateful to the players and management for the great efforts they put in during the year. While it’s Tipperary earliest date of championship exit since the June 12th defeat to Clare in 1999, there is no need for major despondency in the county. We still have a very talented group of players, a highly capable management team and many young players coming through from under 21 and minor ranks. Success is never guaranteed in sport but Tipperary can look forward to being competitive and a contender for national and provincial honours next year. Thanks also our many loyal supporters who have followed the team all year. Their support is much appreciated and it was great to see people who had travelled from places like Antrim, New York, England and elsewhere to Saturday night’s game. We also would like to thank Kilkenny County Board for their efficient running of last Saturday’s game which had a capacity attendance.
MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL FINAL
Hard luck to the Tipperary minor footballers on their 0-15 to 0-10 defeat to Kerry in the Munster minor football final on Sunday last in Killarney. While disappointed not to achieve another provincial title and the historic there in a row, Tipperary remain in the All Ireland championship and will play the winners of the Ulster championship in the All Ireland quarter final on the August bank holiday weekend. The Ulster final will be played on Sunday July 21 between Tyrone and Monaghan.
LEINSTER HURLING FINAL
There was plenty of Tipperary involvement in last Sunday’s Leinster senior hurling final between Dublin and Galway. Johnny Ryan of Boherlahan Dualla did an excellent job as referee and well done to him and his team of officials. Richard Stakelum who captained Tipperary to end their Munster 16 year Munster senior hurling title famine in 1987 is a Dublin selector and this time helped end a 52 year famine of Leinster titles. Ryan O’Dwyer from Cashel is a prominent member of the team, Ross Dunphy, who trained the Tipperary senior hurlers last year, is Dublin’s trainer this year and there are several Dublin players with strong Tipperary connections. Well done to all of them on their deserved success.
BORD GAIS ENERGY MUNSTER UNDER 21 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Good luck to the Tipperary under 21 hurlers for their Munster semi-final clash with Cork in Semple Stadium on Wednesday July 17 at 7.30pm. There have been 32 previous meetings and Tipperary lead the way with 15 wins to 14 with 3 draws. This will be the fifth year in a row that Tipp and Cork have met in the Munster under 21 championship with Tipperary emerging victorious in 3 of the last 4 meetings: 3/6/2009 at Semple Stadium, quarter final, Tipperary 2-22 Cork 0-25 aet; 14/7/2010 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, semi final, Tipperary 2-17 Cork 0-21; 15/7/2011 at Semple Stadium, semi final, Cork 4-19 Tipperary 1-21; 6/6/2012 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, quarter final, Tipperary 0-18 Cork 0-17. Another exciting contest looks to be in prospect for next week and we hope there will be a big Tipperary following in attendance.
MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINAL
Tipperary will play Cork in the Munster intermediate hurling final at Semple Stadium on Friday July 19 at 7.30pm. Preparations are going well with as the intermediate hurlers seek to retain their title and we would ask supporters to come along on Friday July 19 to give the team every encouragement.
THURLES SARSFIELDS’ INTERNATIONAL HURLING FESTIVAL 2013
Thurles Sarsfields will hold their third annual International hurling festival featuring hurling, camogie, road bowling and camán abú this week. The festival starts on Wednesday evening, July 10, when the first rounds of Camán Abú take place. Friday July 12 is a big day with “Target Ball” for special needs starting at 11am. The second Annual Interprovincial Road Bowling Championship takes place at 4pm, venue – Cormackstown Road. Thurles Sarsfields U12 Ladies Footballers take on Templemore in the outside field at 6pm. The finals of the Camán Abú take place at 7pm at the same venue. There is a welcoming social at 9.30pm in the Sarsfields Centre, with music by “The Monks” a group specially chosen for the occasion. All the events are free. On Saturday July 13 in Dr Morris Park and in the outside pitch the the International Hurling Tournament for the Tom Semple Cup goes on all day. The Camogie takes place in St Patrick’s College grounds for the Helen O’Mara Cup again taking place throughout the day. After the finals we will have a celebration social for all in the Sarsfields club house. The music is by “Silver Dollar” and again all entertainment is free. Thurles Sarsfields extends a warm welcome to all and hope it will be a great weekend of sport, music and a wonderful Gathering.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
The final round 2 game of the county senior hurling championship resulted in a 0-22 to 1-11 victory for Burgess over Cappawhite on Monday evening last. The round 3 games have been fixed as 2 double headers. On Saturday July 27 at Templemore, Roscrea will play Moycarkey Borris at 6pm and Nenagh Eire Og will play Upperchurch Drombane at 7.30pm. On Sunday August 4, at MacDonagh Park Nenagh, Borris-Ileigh will play Burgess at 2pm and Templederry Kenyons will play Toomevara at 3.30pm.
LUCOZADE SPORT CLUB CRUSADE 2013
Lucozade Sport and Kilkenny hurling All-Star, Henry Shefflin along with Kerry footballer and All-Star Colm Cooper have launched the new and improved Lucozade Sport Club Crusade. This year, Lucozade Sport is offering adult sport clubs free training equipment and kit in exchange for Lucozade Sport bottle caps. A bespoke catalogue has been developed so that clubs know exactly how many caps they need for each item. Clubs will be sent the items once the specified amount of caps have been collected and verified. Henry Shefflin said, “I think it is great that Lucozade Sport is committing to their successful Club Crusade initiative for a second year. I really felt that last year’s initiative was a fantastic idea and this year it is even better because clubs are guaranteed rewards for saving their bottle caps. Clubs can look through the catalogue, decide what they would like and will know exactly how many caps they need to get it. Gear and equipment is always in short supply, as I know from my own club, Ballyhale Shamrocks, so I am sure a lot of clubs will be delighted with the new offer.” Jim Geraghty, Marketing Manager for Lucozade Sport said, “We are delighted to launch this year’s Lucozade Sport Crusade. We listened to feedback from clubs who took part last year and have adapted the initiative to reward every club that signs up and collects bottle caps.
