CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING SH AND IH COUNTY FINALS
The Clean Ireland Recycling Senior and Intermediate Hurling finals will be played at Semple Stadium on Sunday next, October 13. The intermediate decider between Ballina and Moyne Templetuohy will start at 1.15pm while the senior final between Neangh Eire Og and Loughmore Castleiney will be at 3.30pm. Nenagh qualified for the final by defeating Kildangan in the semi-final replay by 1-17 to 0-12 on Sunday last in Semple Stadium.
Both stands will be open at Semple Stadium for the finals next Sunday and admission prices will be €15 for adults, €10 for OAPs and students with id (pay for full ticket and refund available at designated stiles). Tickets will be on sale during the week in Sheedy’s Centra in Nenagh and O’Connell’s Centra in Templemore and other Centra and SuperValu stores throughout the count. Supporters are encouraged to buy tickets in advance to make access quicker on Sunday.
PREVIOUS SENIOR FINALS RECORD
Nenagh Eire Og will be seeking their second title having won their first in 1995 when they defeated Boherlahan Dualla by 2-25 to 2-8. They have lost 3 finals, all to Toomevara, in 1993, 2006 and 2009. Loughmore Castleiney have won the title on two occasions previously – 2007 when they defeated Drom and Inch by 0-22 to 0-13 and 1988 when they defeated Borris-Ileigh by 207 to 1-8 in a replay. Loughmore have also lost 3 finals in 1983, 1987 and 1989. Loughmore still have the possibility of a county senior double this year as they are in the senior football championship semi-finals also. Nenagh and Loughmore Castleiney have met only twice in the latter stages of the county senior hurling championship. In 1988 at Cashel, Loughmore won a quarter final clash by 3-8 to 0-9 and in 2007 they won a semi-final encounter by 0-15 to 0-13. Interestingly, Loughmore won the county title in both years of these games against Nenagh.
INTERMEDIATE FINALISTS
Moyne Templetuohy will be seeking their second county title at this grade having won previously in 1983 while Ballina are seeking their first ever senior title. Depending on the result, there will be an additional senior hurling team in the North or Mid divisions for next year.
REFEREES
The referee for the senior final will be John McCormack of Knockavilla Donaskiegh Kickhams. John, following in the footsteps of Fergal Horgan and Sean Bradshaw will be the third Knockavilla club man in 5 years to referee the county senior hurling final. The intermediate final will be refereed by another West Tipperary man, John O’Brien of Arravale Rovers.
JUVENILE GO GAMES
There will be juvenile Go Games played at half time in the senior game. It’s a big day for all the juveniles with many of them playing in Semple Stadium for the first time so please give them plenty of support.
LOUGHMORE CASTLEINEY 1988 TEAM TO BE HONOURED
The county board, in conjunction with the Tipperary Star and Templemore Arms Hotel will honour the Loughmore-Castleiney senior hurling team that won the 1988 county final on county final day, October 13. The team defeated Borris-Ileigh in a replayed final on October 8 by 2-7 to 1-8, following a late goal by Pat McGrath. The victory brought the club its first senior county title and the Dan Breen Cup was received after the game by captain, Eamon Sweeney. The members of the team and the panel and selectors will be hosted at a reception by the county board before the county final and will be guests in the VIP section for the game. They will be introduced to the crowd before the final and will guests at a dinner in the Templemore Arms Hotel afterwards. Two of the players that day – Pat McGrath and Seamus Bohan – are selectors with the current team so a busy day beckons for them on Sunday. Well done to the organising committee chaired by Seamus J. King and also including John Costigan, Siobhain Mackey and Pat Carey.
TV COVERAGE
There will be deferred coverage of the final on TG4 but we would encourage as many people as possible to attend the finals. It’s the biggest hurling day of the year in club hurling in Tipperary and the best place to be is undoubtedly Semple Stadium.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The draw for the Clean Ireland Recycling senior football championship semi-finals has seen the following fixtures emerge for Leahy Park, Cashel on Sunday, October 20 – at 1.30pm JK Brackens will play Aherlow Gaels and at 3pm Loughmore Castleiney will take on defending champions Clonmel Commercials.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Clean Ireland Recycling Intermediate football championship semi-finals will be played on Saturday September 12. Upperchurch-Drombane will play Borrisokane at Dolla at 3pm. Also at 3pm Rockwell Rovers will play Ballyporeen or Kildangan in the other semi-final. Ballyporeen play Kildangan on Wednesday night, October 9 at 7.30pm in Morris Park, Thurles. If Ballyporeen qualify for the semi-final the game v Rockwell Rovers will be played at Cahir while if Kildangan qualify, it will be Templemore.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP “A”
Knockshegowna, Moycarkey-Borris and Toomevara have qualified for the county semi-finals of the Junior A hurling championship. They will be joined by the winners of the Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams v Drom and Inch replay which will take place on Saturday October 12 at 3pm. As Knockshegowna are the only club left which does not have a senior team, they will automatically represent Tipperary in the Munster junior A club hurling championship.
TIPPERARY CLUBS OCTOBER DRAW
The top prize in this month’s draw went to New York, the second time this has happened in the current draw. The winner of the Skoda Octavia or €15,000 was Noel Hickey of Whitestone New York. The ticket was sold by the Tipperary hurling club in New York. The winner of the Skoda Fabia or €10,000 prize was Maud Moore of Mylerstown, Clonmel whose ticket was sold to her by the Moyle Rovers club. The weekend for 2 at Dromoland Castle sponsored by Acorn Life was won by William and Kathleen Maloney.
TIPPTOBERFEST
Please refer to the Tipperary GAA website, www.tipperary.gaa.ie, for full details of the Tipptoberfest at the Clonmel Park Hotel on the October bank holiday weekend. The main events are boxing on the Friday night, Nathan Carter Concert on the Saturday night, Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur on Sunday night and monster bingo and a ceili on the Monday. The festival is to raise funds for the Tipperary teams training funds for 2014. Tickets for the Friday night boxing competition involving hurlers, footballers, camogie players and ladies footballers are available from Lar na Pairce and through GAA clubs throughout the county. Your support for this festival would be greatly appreciated.
RELAUNCH OF LAR NA PAIRCE GAA MUSEUM
President of the G.A.A., Liam O’Neill, will officially re-launch Lár na Páirce, the G.A.A. museum at Thurles, on this Friday afternoon, Ocotber 11. The museum, which was opened by President Mary Robinson in November 1994, has recently undergone a major upgrade and refurbishment, with generous help from North Tipperary LEADER Partnership. GAA members and the general public have been invited along to the event, which will commence from 2pm with the official launch at 3.45pm. The committee hope that the refurbished museum will become an important visitor attraction and bring more tourists and visitors to the town. They also hope that Thurles and Tipperary people will visit the museum and see for themselves the important GAA heritage housed there. Congratulations are due to the Lar na Pairce Committee chaired by Seamus J. King with members, Liam O Donnchu, Noel Morris and Jim Finn for their excellent work in spearheading the refurbishment and relaunch of the museum.
2014 TIPPERARY GAA YEARBOOK
The 2014 Tipperary GAA Yearbook is being compiled at present and the Yearbook committee is seeking articles and information for inclusion. Clubs that have accomplished any unique achievement in 2013 such as winning a major title for the first time, achieving a double, opening new dressing rooms or a new grounds, etc are requested to send through an appropriate article for inclusion.
The Yearbook committee are looking to all clubs to submit any obituaries of their deceased members in the last 12 months. The maximum number of words for an obituary is 150 and please include the club name and the years also, e.g. 1935-2013, as well as his/her G.A.A. achievements and a photograph of the deceased person.
The deadline for sending information is 1st November. Please e-mail information and photographs which must be named to John Smith, Secretary Tipperary Yearbook Committee at yearbook.tipperary@gaa.ie. Photographs can also be posted to John Smith c/o Tipperary GAA Office, Slievenamon Road, Thurles.
