ELECTRIC IRELAND MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Commiserations to the Tipperary players, management and backroom team following their 0-12 to 0-9 defeat by Monaghan in the All Ireland quarter final at Longford on Monday. Despite the result, it was a battling and courageous performance from the Tipperary team and they have represented the county with skill and pride all year. Thanks are due to the players, Charlie McGeever and his management team and all those who helped and supported the team in any way during the 2013 season.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Roscrea advanced to Round 4 of the Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling championship with a 1-12 to 1-11 victory over Moycarkey-Borris at Templemore last Sunday evening. Borris-Ileigh will play Burgess on Saturday, August 10 at 7pm at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh and Templederry Kenyons will play Toomevara on Saturday August 17 at 7pm at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh in the final 2 round 3 games. Extra time will be played in these games if necessary.
CLEAN IRELAND RECYCLING COUNTY SENIOR HURLING RELEGATION
The Clean Ireland Recycling senior hurling relegation semi-final replay between Boherlahan Dualla and Golden Kilfeacle has been refixed for Friday, August 9 at 7pm in Holycross with extra time in the event of a draw.
DIVISIONAL HURLING FINALS
The 2 remaining divisional senior hurling finals are fixed for this coming weekend with familiar pairings in both finals. On Saturday evening, August 10 in Kickham Park at 7pm, Clonoulty Rossmore will seek their 7th title in a row when they take on Eire Og Annacarty Donohill in the West final. Clonoulty Rossmore will start as strong favourites but given Eire Og’s progression to last year’s county semi-finals while the champions exited relatively tamely at quarter-final stage suggests to others that this should be a close encounter with the outcome very much in doubt. It’s also a year of surprises so anybody staying at home in the expectation of a comfortable Clonoulty Rossmore win could well miss a thriller. John O’Brien of Arravale Rovers will referee the game. On Sunday evening August 11 the Mid final will take place between Drom and Inch and Loughmore Castleiney at 7pm in Boherlahan. This is also likely to be a game well worth attending with the outcome between these neighbouring clubs and close rivals always difficult to predict. Johnny Butler of Upperchurch Drombane will referee the game. We wish the teams, match officials and both Boards the best of luck for their finals.
TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW
The monthly Tipperary Clubs draw was hosted by the Drom and Inch club last Friday night at The Ragg Lounge. The Skoda Octavia or €15,000 was won by Corina Dooley, whose ticket was sold by the Cahir club, and the Skoda Fabia or €10,000 was won by Tadhg Carey, whose ticket was sold by Carrig & Riverstown. The weekend for 2 at Dromoland Castle, sponsored by Acorn Life, was won by Joe O’Connell.
7TH POC FADA TITLE FOR BRENDAN CUMMINS
Congratulations to long serving Tipperary hurling goalkeeper Brendan Cummins on winning the 52nd staging of the M. Donnelly GAA All-Ireland Poc Fada final at the Cooley Mountains on Saturday last. It is Brendan’s seventh title which equals Ger Cunningham's (Cork) record. Brendan, who led at the half way stage, won with a total of 51 pucks. Down's Graham Clarke finished second with 55 pucks with James Skehill, Galway goalkeeper, in third place with 57 pucks. Meanwhile, Patricia Jackman from Waterford won her fifth title in a row in the Camogie section with 27 pucks. Jack Coyne from Galway was the under 16 winner.
FRIENDS OF TIPPERARY FOOTBALL GOLF CLASSIC
The Friends of Tipperary Football are holding their Annual Golf Classic in Thurles Golf Club on Saturday, August 17. The competition is for Teams of 4 at a cost of 120 euro per team. The response has excellent so far but there are still times available for all wishing to take part. Tee Sponsorship is also available for 50 euro per tee. All monies raised by the Friends are used for the promotion of Tipperary football at all levels from Under 14 to Senior.
REFEREES
Two Tipperary referees will be on duty for the All Ireland senior and minor hurling semi-finals at Croke Park on August 18. The senior game between Clare and Limerick will be refereed by Johnny Ryan of Boherlahan Dualla and the minor game between Limerick and Galway will be refereed by Fergal Horgan of Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams. Johnny is a highly experienced and able referee and has already been in charge of All Ireland finals at minor, under 21 and club level as well as provincial senior finals in both Munster and Leinster. Fergal is new to the inter-county panel and it’s a great achievement to be rewarded so early in his career with a national semi-final. We wish them both and their teams of officials well for these important appointments.
TIPPERARY WIN ALL IRELAND CAMOGIE UNDER 16 TITLE
Congratulations to Tipperary on defeating Galway by 4-6 to 2-8 to win their second All Ireland camogie under 16 title in 3 years at the weekend. Such was the high standard of play that both teams received a standing ovation at half time. Tipperary dominated in the early stages but Galway finished strongly before half time to leave the score 3-2 to 2-4 at the break with Tipperary’s scores coming from full forward Niamh Tracy, who found the net twice, and centre forward Sinead Buckley who scored the third goal. After the resumption Galway piled on the pressure despite playing against a strong breeze and went ahead by a point. The pressure was immense but the Tipperary defence held out despite the loss of centre back Lorna O’Dwyer through injury. The sides were level with four minutes remaining when the Tipperary girls found their best form through hard work and skill, A third goal from Niamh Tracy and two pointed frees from the same player plus points from Ciardha Maher and Sinead Buckley saw the Premier county win by 4 points. Niamh Tracy was awarded Player of the Match but this was essentially a team victory. Credit to Manager Brian Boyle, selectors Mary Howard, Ailish Maher and Frances O’Brien who had the players so well prepared. Roisin Howard from Cahir who captained the side made a composed speech on accepting the cup from Rachel Hogan Chairperson of Camogie’s Leinster Council.
LEGENDS TOUR OF CROKE PARK WITH TOMMY DUNNE
The 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour Series of Croke Park continues in August with Tipperary’s Tommy Dunne. On Saturday August 10, the All-Ireland winning captain and former Hurler of the Year will join staff of the GAA Museum on a unique tour of Croke Park on the eve of the GAA Hurling All-Ireland semi-final clash between Dublin and Cork. The annual tour series, which started in 2008, has been a huge hit with followers of both football and hurling, providing visitors with a unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour through the hands-on perspective of their hurling and Gaelic football heroes. These special tours provide fans with an unforgettable opportunity to hear memories and anecdotes first hand from players who thrilled Croke Park crowds and became household names in the process. Hurling Legends who have participated in previous years include Tipperary’s Nicky English and Babs Keating as well as Anthony Daly, Jamesie O’Connor, Eddie Keher, Jimmy Barry Murphy, Brian Cody, Brian Whelehan and the legendary voice of Gaelic games, Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh.
The Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour with Tommy Dunne is scheduled to take place on Saturday 10th August at 2pm. The tour includes a trip to the newly-refurbished GAA Museum which is home to many exclusive exhibits and features new galleries celebrating great teams and players, as well as an interactive skills zone and Hall of Fame.
