Social Housing Improvements to Benefit Tenants in Tipperary

Fine Gael TD for Tipperary, Noel Coonan, has said that Government funding to improve the social housing stock in Tipperary will improve the lives of many social housing tenants. €445,056 will be allocated to local authorities for adaptations and extensions to social houses to meet the needs of tenants with a disability or to address serious overcrowding. A further €1,000,222 will be allocated to local authorities for energy retrofitting works to social houses. This announcement is part of a €23 million national scheme to improve social housing.

Deputy Coonan said: “By improving people’s homes, this funding will directly improve the quality of many social housing units in Tipperary. These very important improvement works will directly benefit the people living in these homes and will serve as a sensible long term investment in our social housing stock.

“The funding provided will help improve people’s quality of life. Works will be carried out to adapt and extend social houses to meet needs of tenants with a disability or to address serious overcrowding. As social housing residents age some require adaptations and extensions to their homes in order to continue to live independently.

“There will also be an upgrading of the energy efficiency of local authority homes. This is part of a three year national jobs stimulus programme that will see the energy efficiency of 25,000 of the poorest insulated local authority homes improved," continued Deputy Coonan.

“As part of the programme of energy retrofitting social houses, there will be a particular focus on improving attic and wall insulation in homes which require it. This will result in improvements in the thermal efficiency of the homes and improved comfort levels all around.

“This will result in warmer homes, with reduced fuel bills this winter for many local authority tenants.  The scheme will also support the creation of hundreds of jobs nationally in the green energy sector,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
