Local News, Announcements

Science Week at Nenagh Arts Centre

Travelling to Nenagh specially for the week is renowned professor from Birkbeck University of London, Paul Barnes, who will give the annual Bernal Lecture.  John Desmond Bernal of Nenagh was one of Ireland's greatest scientists, possessing an extraordinary  mind, within both science and general knowledge.  The talk will look at the man Bernal and describe, in layman's language, the scientific mood and prevalent discussions during his career. This will include the field of modern Crystallography and Bernal's key role in its development. Paul Barnes was a colleague of JD Bernal, so expect some unique insights. The Lecture takes place at 8 p.m. Tuesday, 11th November. Admission is free.

Schools events feature RTE Junior resident nature guy Dale Treadwell (known for his slots on ‘News2day’ and ‘Albie the Why Guy On Wildlife’) will delve into the prehistoric back garden of his Australian background for a special Science Week Presentation of ‘Dinos Down Under’.  The presentation is pitched for middle to upper Primary Level and takes place on Monday 10th of November.

On Wednesday the 12th of November for schools,  in a timely lecture molecular micro-biologist Professor Tony Pembroke of the University of Limerick will examine ebola and other infectious diseases, how they become pathogenic, how they cause disease and how science is currently trying to combat these diseases in an era when drug development is finding it hard to keep up. This event is for 12 years upwards.

Schools events are €5 per student and should be booked in advance from the Arts Centre on 067 34400. Group rates may apply. Science Week at Nenagh Arts Centre is supported by Procter and Gamble.
