Relay for Life Tipperary

Greg Starr former leader on RTE Show "Operation Transformation" will officially open Relay for Life Tipperary 2013 on Saturday August 24th in Toomevara at 5.00pm. At Relay for Life, hundreds of people gather to embark on a very special 24 hour journey. Relay for Life, is a very special overnight celebration and a unique, empowering and fun event. At the heart of relay is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have left us.

What happens during Relay?
Teams of people will take turns around a track. Because Cancer never sleeps each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 24 hour event. Otherwise team members are free to socialize, picnic, play games, dance and participate in lots of fun activities. Everyone in the community is invited to come along and experience this inspiring event of celebration and commemoration. Two of the highlights during the Relay event are the survivors lap and the candle of hope ceremony.

Survivors Lap
The survivors lap is the inspirational side to the event where cancer survivors of all ages are invited to begin the relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends and teams from the community. This will take place on Saturday at 5.00pm.

Candle of Hope Ceremony
The candle of hope ceremony takes place later in the evening at 10.00pm when darkness begins to fall. Before the event everyone in the community is invited to dedicate a candle of hope to someone they know who has been touched by cancer. As the evening approaches the candles are set around the track and lit by participants. It is during this time that the true meaning of Relay hits home.

Why do we Relay?
Cancer will affect one in three people in Ireland during their lifetime. All funds raised through sponsorship and fundraising will go to support the Irish Cancer Societies and mission to provide world class facilities, ensuring fewer people get cancer and those that do have better outcomes.
Two thirds of the money stays in Tipperary to provide funding for local services and one third of the money raised goes to cancer Research. Relay for Life, Tipperary has raised over €250,000 in the first two years of our event in Toomevara. This money is a significant contribution to our local community and we are very proud of our efforts so far, in saying that we need as much support and help as possible going forward.

If you are interested in supporting the cause in any way, by entering a team, sponsoring money or supporting the event in Toomevara on 24-25th of August, Tipperary Relay for Life would be very grateful. Please spread the word online and offline. Thank you.
