Relay for Life Tipperary is returning to St. Michael’s GAA Grounds in Toomevara next year starting at 5pm August 15 to 5pm on August 16.

Relay for Life is a 24-hour walking relay that takes place around the globe, raising funds in support of the fight against cancer. It gives communities a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember lost loved ones, and fight back against the disease.

The Relay for Life events raises vital funds to support the work of the Irish Cancer Society.   At the heart of each Relay for Life event, teams of friends, neighbours, families and colleagues come together in groups and commit to keeping participants walking around a track or path for 24 hours. Many other activities take place throughout the 24 hours to create a festive atmosphere.

Relay for Life Tipperary took a break this year, and after numerous calls for the event to go ahead again next year, a new committee was formed which some old and new members.

Committee Chairperson Lorna King says that she is delighted to see this wonderful event back in Tipperary.  “Relay for Life brings the community together to remember people who we have lost to cancer, and celebrate those who have survived cancer, and there is entertainment to suit everyone, all the while raising money and awareness for the work that’s be done all the time by the Irish Cancer Society.  We are delighted to have the support of the Business Innovation Centre this year where we will be holding our meetings, Lorraine has been a great help to us”.

Noelle Clancy who this year will be looking after the survivors is really looking forward to the event.  “I am really looking forward to Relay for Life 2015, I hope to have as many survivors as possible there, so that they can celebrate their survival and fight back against cancer.  The survivors really are the VIPs of this event.   The survivors’ lap which starts every Relay for Life is very special for anyone who has survived cancer, during the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. After the survivors’ lap there is a carer’s lap for all our loved ones who looked after us while we were fighting the disease".

Sarah Guilfoyle, the teams’ chairperson is calling on everybody to be part of the event.  Sarah says “I’m looking forward to working on this brilliant event, getting the teams on board, and supporting them through their journey.  The Teams play such a crucial role in the event, they walk in relays for 24 hours, they raise funds for the event as well as participating in games, activities and competitions throughout the event".
