Planning Your Promotional Video

So you’re thinking of getting a video produced for your business but don’t know where to start?

I’ve been involved in a variety of video shoots over the years and can offer a few hints and tips to help you make a start at it.

So the first thing I would want to decide on is the ’Style’ of the video. Is it going to be a ‘talking head’ interview style? Or maybe a demonstration type video, showing a product in use? Another popular style of video is to edit together footage of your business and add a professional voice over afterwards as not everyone wants to be on camera.

Decide on the quality you want to go for. Remember that your promotional video represents your company much like a sales person, except the video can’t make up it excuses on the spot; it’ll have to stand up on its own!  If you decide to hire a professional videographer, the difference will be clear to see. HD cameras as standard, professional audio and sophisticated editing will help your video stand out from the crowd.

So now that you have decided on the style and quality of your video, next is the actual shoot. A location needs to be decided on. Aspects related to location include, lighting, access and to find out if you need permission to film in the location you want. The actual content should have been decided upon before filming, so if there is dialogue to be spoken, its best to have it written out beforehand, no point wasting time trying to come up with catchy things to say off the cuff! If you’re giving a visual tour of your premises it might be a good idea to have it clean and remove any clutter.

Now that you have planned and filmed your video, it’s time to edit! This is a crucial part of the process. For me one of the main considerations is the overall length of the video. This of course entirely depends on the product or service being sold. But typically a 2 to 3 minute video will be more than enough time to tell your story; people may not be willing to watch a 15 minute video to decide if they want to call into your shop for a coffee!

After taking in the advice above, the final consideration, should you film it yourself or hire a professional? To help you decide on this, I can advise my average price for a 2 to 3 minute promotional video is only €199. This includes consultation before hand, the actual filming, sound recording and the final editing. When I arrive for the shoot, I come with full public liability insurance cover so there is no risk associated with me being on your premises.

Thanks for your time,
Robin Wallace.
