A €50 million boost to repair regional and local road surfaces has been announced by the Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar as part of the Government’s Investing in Infrastructure & Jobs plan. “I am allocating a further €50 million for repairs and restoration of regional and local roads. The work will be carried out this summer and autumn. This funding will be provided directly to local authorities, which can start work on the repairs as soon as they receive the grants,” Minister Varadkar said.
North Tipperary is to benefit to the tune of €1,314,883 with South Tipperary receiving €1,427,754. Noel Coonan TD has welcomed this funding as roads have deteriorated following a bleak Winter. “Both North and South Tipperary County Councils have good track records in providing funding to improve roads and the allocation to each local authority in part reflects this record. We have experienced a tough Winter which has eroded our roadways and it is important that, despite our financial constraints, our roads are safe." said Mr Coonan.
This funding must be spent in 2013 and is to be directed primarily to surface restoration works.
