The countdown has begun for the flagship fundraising event for the North Tipperary Hospice Movement, the Shannon Suir Cycle (September 13th) with an appeal to businesses and sports clubs to submit individuals and teams to participate in the event.

The 120km event starts in Dromineer and will travel through Nenagh, Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles before joining a 10km family cycle for the return leg to Dromineer and is, according to organisers, an idea event for businesses to support.

The cycle was originally scheduled for August but was moved to the September 13th date to accommodate another event.

Organising Committee Member Michael Molamphy said that while there will be scores of cyclists undertaking the full event, the cycle is ideal for relay teams or for those who would like to take on an individual leg of the full loop, while representing their business and other organisations.

“This is a fun cycle and while there would need to be a decent level of fitness for cyclists who are taking on the full route, it is ideal for relay teams, with those teams having as many members as they wish,” he said.

“This option particularly lends itself to businesses, sporting and other organisations as they get to support this very important fundraiser for North Tipp Hospice and have a great day out in the process. For example, for those with little or even no time spent on the bicycle, they could pull a team together that could take on the individual legs, perhaps Dromineer to Roscrea, which is 40km or perhaps Roscrea to Templemore which is just 20km.

“All that is asked of them is that they pay the individual leg registration fee of €10. An individual participant is encouraged to raise €100, so we hope that a team would raise in excess of that.”

“The event will be fully marshalled, with bike support and first aid so really all that is needed is to turn up in Dromineer that morning and have the other relay team members positioned at the other points along the route, which are Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles and Nenagh for the Family Fun Cycle.”

Businesses and clubs who get involved will be named as a supporter of the event on the website, social media and on other promotional materials.

The event is, however, very much open to individual participants, either for the full event (registration fee for full event is €25) or any of the individual legs - Dromineer to Roscrea (40km); Roscrea to Templemore (20k); Templemore to Thurles (15km); Thurles to Nenagh (37km); Nenagh to Dromineer Family Cycle (10km).

The route will include five legs, ranging from 120km route to 10km family cycle. The 120km route will start at 10am in Dromineer, leaving the Shannon for Roscrea and Templemore where there will pit-stops for water and other refreshments if required.  It will stop by the banks of the River Suir in Thurles for lunch and resume for the final two legs, to Nenagh and Drominer.

The registration fee will go towards covering costs of the event and participants can also join Shannon Suir Cycle training regime, details of which will be posted on the www.shannonsuircycle.ie website this week. Cyclists must also register for the event on the website in advance (but pay their registration fee on the day) and will receive a sponsorship card by post.

The North Tipperary Hospice Movement has branches in Nenagh, Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles and Drom & Inch. Chairperson of the North Tipperary Hospice Board of management Josie O Grady said that she is delighted so many people have shown their enthusiasm already for this event.

“Shannon Suir Cycle is the first of its kind for the North Tipperary Hospice Movement and it will be a great opportunity for us to raise the vital funds needed as well as connect all of the branches together in one special fundraising event.”

“We hope that people of North Tipperary will support the cyclist leading up to and on the day of the cycle. This event is not solely about fundraising, it is to spread awareness about the services which are provided by the North Tipperary Hospice Movement, all of which are free of charge” said Josie.
