Nine things to do in Nenagh this weekend

Christmas lights

The build-up to the festive period begins in earnest on Saturday, December 1st at 4.30pm when Mayor Lalor McGee will turn on the town’s Christmas lights.

GAA action

Plenty of action to whet the appetite of the GAA fan this weekend. On Saturday at 1.30pm in Toomevara Nenagh Éire Óg take on Kilruane MacDonagh’s in an under-21A hurling semi-final at 1.30pm. The under-21B hurling loser’s group final between Kildangan and Shannon Rovers Gaels also takes place on Saturday in Borrisokane at 1pm.

Meanwhile the junior C hurling championship semi-finals also take place on Saturday - Ballinahinch v Silvermines in Templederry at 1.30pm and Borris-Ileigh v Borrisokane in Dolla at 1.30pm.

Nenagh Ormond RFC

The Nenagh Ormond RFC senior team play their final AIL home game before Christmas against Skerries at 2.30pm on Saturday. The second team is in Munster Junior Cup first round action away to Abbeyfeale on Sunday (2pm). The under-19s are at home to Clanwilliam in the semi-final of the East Munster League on Sunday while the under-17s are away to Clanwilliam in the semi-final of the East Munster league (both of these games take place at 12 noon).

Abbey Court Craft Fair

The Abbey Court Craft Fair takes place on Sunday, December 2nd from 11am until late afternoon in the Abbey Court Hotel. All welcome.

Munster Junior Cup

One junior soccer contest catches the eye this weekend and that game takes place on Sunday at 2pm when Nenagh Celtic host BT Harps in the Munster Junior Cup.

Nenagh Walking Club

The Nenagh Walking Club’s winter social outing takes place on Sunday, December 2nd - this will comprise a walk along the Nenagh River from the Dublin Road to Ballyartella. Following the walk The Thatch in Ballycommon will host a four-course meal with tickets priced at just €22.95. Booking is eesential and if you wish to attend please contact Mary Ryan on 086 820 5766. The club’s Tuesday evening walks start from Tesco car park at 7.30pm. For details contact 086 856 2444 or 086 820 5766. Membership of the club for 2013 is now due.

Ormond Historical Society

On Monday, December 3rd the Abbey Court Hotel (8pm) will host a lecture entitled “Edmund Rice - 250 Years On”. The lecture coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Christian Brothers arrival in Nenagh. Guest speaker will be Dr Daire Keogh (President of St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra). Admission is free to the members of the society (€5 for non-members). Antonia O’Keeffe exhibition

On Tuesday, December 4th (7pm) the Antonia O’Keeffee Art Exhibition will be launched in the Sheelagh na Gig book shop in Cloughjordan.

Nenagh ICA Christmas Floral Demonstration

The Nenagh ICA Christmas Floral Demonstration takes place at the Nenagh Éire Óg GAA Complex on Wednesday, December 5th at 8pm. Admission €10.
