Newtown Dog Show & Family Fun Day 2014

Spring is here so it is the time of year when our four-legged friends start looking forward once again to The Newtown Dog Show and Family Fun Day.

The event, now in its sixth successful year, will again be held in Barry’s Field, Newtown, Nenagh on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May 2014. This year the organising committee have announced that all funds raised will be split equally between two very deserving causes, Special Olympics Munster, and The Irish Kidney Association's Transplant Team Ireland, both of which have had such a positive impact upon the lives of local people.

Competition will take place in 8 Show Classes and 2 Fun Classes, including Best Large Breed, Best Terrier, Best Utility/Working Dog/Bitch, Best Gundog/Bitch, Best Dog, Best Bitch, Best Small Dog/Bitch and Best Rescue Dog/Bitch. The fun classes will include The Waggiest Tail, and the always popular Child's Best Friend (for owners 10 years and under).  Beautiful Crystal Trophies will be presented to The Overall Show Champion and Runner-Up, and Rosettes will be awarded for 1st to 5th places in each class.

There was a record number of entries last year across the various classes, and two Show Rings will be available again to ensure that the event runs smoothly on the day. To get competition off to a prompt start, the Show Committee have decided that registration for entries will commence at 12.30pm.

Once again the always entertaining Dog Agility Ring will be a feature of the show. The Draw for a Tractor Trailer of logs will take place on the day, so watch out for the entry forms in your local shops, with lines again only €2 each. Sponsors and backers, both old and new, have again been generous in their support and there will be lots of Games, Stalls, Draw Prizes and Activities for all the family, as well as refreshments both on-site and in the village in both Barry's and The Skyfarmers Bar/Restaurant. All the usual favourites will be at the show again, including the Kids’ Bungee Jumps, Octopus Ride and Pony Rides.

As before, entry to Barry’s Field for the show will be free and it is hoped that the bucket collection at the gate will again be generously supported for the benefit of the two very deserving causes.

This is another big year for Special Olympics, with some 1500 Athletes from all over Ireland travelling to compete in 13 Sports at the 2014 National Games in Limerick from June 12th to 15th, with already around 5000 volunteers stepping forward to help. Ormond Special Olympics Club are delighted to have had 7 local athletes selected to represent the Munster Team in Athletics and Swimming for the Games.

The Irish Kidney Association is always keen to encourage transplant recipients and people on dialysis to engage in regular exercise and sport to promote good physical and mental health.. The Association is responsible for Ireland's involvement in The European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships which will be held in Krakow, Poland in 2014. Local medal-winning representatives in previous Games include Orla Hogan-Ryan from Nenagh and Sheila Gregan from Newtown, both of whom are outstanding examples of the success of organ donation and transplantation.

Even at this late stage, the Show Committee are happy to hear from anyone who would like to discuss booking limited remaining space for their stalls, or from volunteers to help with the many duties required to ensure everything runs to plan on the day. Please telephone the Committee Members on either 087 2736559 or 087 9511211.

Mark your diaries for Bank Holiday Monday, 5th  May to ensure you don’t miss out on this great fun day for the whole family, including your four legged friend. Both the deserving causes would welcome your support. So get those pooches pampered, brushed and spruced up, ready to show them off on their big day and keep your fingers crossed for yet another sunny Newtown Dog Show.
