Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV took on Navan RFC last Saturday at New Ormond Park.  When the sides met last year, Navan came back from an initial losing position to beat Nenagh so this was bound to be a tough test.  Navan played with the wind in the first half and opened the scoring with a well-struck penalty.  They followed this up with what the Nenagh lads will admit was a soft try when they broke through the lineout and the cover defence, which may have suffered from a lack of communication, to touch down.  The try was converted to leave the score at 0-10.

Nenagh fought back and made their way into the Navan half.  From a scrum, scrumhalf Eoin Gardiner picked and went blind but changed the play by passing back to the left.  Ger Hermse made a half break in the middle of the pitch and offloaded to Nathan Daly who spectacularly picked up the ball from around his toes without breaking his stride and passed to Derek Corcoran whose pace took him over the line.  This left the score at 5-10 at half time.

The second half started well for Nenagh with Jack Donovan collecting the kick off and Nenagh recycling well.  It was Daly again who found himself with ball in hand in sight of the line.  He showed some good footwork to get through a small gap and, despite being tackled short of the line, reached long to score.  Dan Fogarty converted.  The score remained 12-10 for some time.  Nenagh spent a long period of time in the last quarter in Navan’s 22.  With Navan having a player sin binned, they seemed to have the upper hand.  However, Navan were dogged in defence and Nenagh eventually opted to kick for the posts from one of the penalties to take the score to 15-10.

All credit to Navan, they knew it wasn’t over until the final whistle blew and they threw everything they had at Nenagh.  With the referee playing a penalty advantage and despite being a man down, they managed to catch Nenagh for numbers to send a player through only for the whistle to be blown for the previous infringement.  The frustration of the Navan players was plain to see but they put it to good use to score several phases after the resultant scrum leaving the final score at 15-15.

Nenagh have not lost at home in the league in two years and although they will have been pleased to keep this record they were definitely disappointed with a draw and will be determined to get back to winning ways when they face Boyne away  at 2.30pm next Saturday.

Bus leaves the clubhouse at 9.30am sharp. Contact us through any committee member, through our facebook page or by using the contact form on our website for details.

Under 18’s

Our Under 18’s travelled to Cobh in their second Pan Munster fixture. With only 15 players the Nenagh lads did the Nenagh Ormond jersey proud, just falling short at the end to lose 15 points to 10.

All players to attend training on Tuesday night as we have a home game next weekend v Cork Constitution. Also a big thank you to john Delaney who stepped in and mentored the lads in Cobh.

Under 12’s

Nenagh Under 12’s hosted Clonmel last Sunday.  Despite the difficult conditions both teams played some great rugby and the match finished 5 tries apiece.  After a 6 week break Nenagh started sluggish, attempting  to move the ball wide at every opportunity but the conditions didn’t help and they struggled to hold on to the ball.  Clonmel got in for a few early tries. Nenagh started to win more possession, held on to the ball and clawed their way back into the match.  The forwards started to carry the ball, the recycling at the breakdown improved, the passes started to stick and they scored some great tries.

Joe Cooney had a dream outing scoring a hat trick of tries, Paidi Williams and James Duff were the other scorers.  Overall it was a great team performance with all 15 players contributing.  Great credit is due to the players for putting in such an effort.  Bryan Murphy started his first match of the season and had a great game.

Thanks to all the parents who helped out with the food.

Players: Bryan Murphy,  Danny Wilkinson, James Meagher, Jack Deane,  Paidi Williams, Hugh Guest, Dylan Murphy, Ruari Moylan, Joe Cooney, Jack Meehan, Conor White,  Sean Richardson, Kevin Cleary, Eoin O Meara, James Duff.

Under 11’s

The Under 11’s played at home on Sunday morning against a very well organised Clonmel side.  Underfoot conditions were awful but both teams got stuck into each other from the first minute and the bigger Clonmel team raced into a two try lead.  But Nenagh to their credit didn't shy back and some strong tackling and great rucking drove Clonmel back.  We were rewarded with a try from Eoghan Tighe.  Nenagh now started to spread the ball wide at every opportunity and after some near misses DJ McGrath scored a super try after a near length of the field move.

Shortly after this a horrible hail shower led to all the players having to seek shelter in the stand.  On resumption both teams were so cold we decided to call it a day.  Fair play to all the squad for giving their all in probably the worst conditions they ever encountered.  You can't play in Thomond Park every week!

Team: Jack Gleeson, Tommy Ryan, Sean Fitzgerald, Barry Ryan, Martin Ryan, Niall O’Sullivan, Daniel Manning, Daire Slevin, Jamie Cottrell, Liam Cooney, Tom Kennedy, Sonny Dower, Evan Rainsford, James Finn, Andrew Ferris, Patrick Fogarty, Peter Collins, DJ McGrath, Eoghan Tighe, John Brislane, Nathan Griffin.
