Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 27/11/2013

Our Senior XV and Under 20s both had good wins this weekend.

Senior XV Update

Our Senior XV continued their AIL campaign on Saturday at home to Instonians. Despite their 12th place position on the league table, the results of Instonian's two previous losses (by one and two points) meant that Nenagh knew they would be tough to beat. This proved to be the case in the opening quarter which saw both teams taking time to settle

However, as the game went on Nenagh proved too strong to contain, winning a penalty try through their domination of the scrum and setting up pacy winger Jack Donovan to touch down in the corner. Dan Fogarty continued his immaculate form, converting both tries and scoring two penalties to leave the final score at 20-8 to Nenagh.

Next up for the lads are third placed Skerries away this Saturday at 2.30pm.  This is set to be a great game and is sure to be worth the trip.  Bus departing the clubhouse Saturday morning, contact any committee member for details.

Under 20s 17-14 Bruff

Nenagh Ormond Under 20s hosted Bruff in the Division 2 South Western Conference League on Saturday last in Tyone. With both teams unbeaten so far in this league this was always going to be a tight affair. The Nenagh lads started strong and were making progress into Bruff territory when indiscipline from the Nenagh side saw Bruff getting the first score of the game with a penalty which they slotted over easily. However the home side soon recovered and forced a penalty of their own bringing the scores level at 3 all halfway through the first half.

The Bruff boys kept the pressure on and spent a lot of time on the Nenagh 22. Some well worked play however resulted in Nenagh making their way down the field and they were awarded another penalty which Willie Carroll again slotted over to bring the score to 6 – 3 to Nenagh. Another penalty each was exchanged before the half time whistle. The score at half time was 9 – 6 to the home side.

Bruff came out and scored a penalty in the first minute of the second half and the sides were level again. However, some skilful passages of play helped Nenagh work their way up towards the Bruff line and good hands from all the backline opened up a gap for Darragh Hassey to touch down under the posts. Bruff were not giving up though and these two very evenly matched sides were both fighting for the win. The visitors managed to break through the strong Nenagh defence and score a try of their own, the sides were level again at 14 all.

Both sides gave it their all right to the end and it could have gone either way but on this occasion it was to be Nenagh who came out on top. Under severe pressure with the last kick of the game the ever cool Willie Carroll split the posts from a difficult angle. Final score Nenagh 17 – Bruff 14. We’ll be looking forward to the return match when we visit Bruff on their home ground.

A very big thank you to all the parents who supplied soup and sandwiches to the teams after the game. It was very much appreciated.
