Banbridge 20-7 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV travelled North to Banbridge on Saturday last for their first AIL game of 2015.  Nenagh started brightly, showing some of the form that brought them up to Division 2A in the first quarter of match.  They scored early in the game when winger Misi Salave kicked into the Banbridge 22 from his own half and put pressure on the fullback who knocked on.  From the resulting scrum on the left side of the pitch, Nenagh went through some good, controlled phases in tight and won a penalty in front of the posts.  Quick thinking from scrumhalf and captain Eoin Gardiner saw him tap and go, catching the Banbridge defence off guard to touch down.  In the absence of the injured Dan Fogarty, Misi Salave stepped up and slotted the conversion to put Nenagh ahead.

Nenagh Ormond dominated every area of the match apart from the scrum, where they were under pressure, for most of the first half.  However, they failed to convert this dominance into points and Banbridge showed themselves to be a clinical outfit, scoring on their first visit to the Nenagh 22.  Once inside the Nenagh 22, they stepped up the pace and centre Mark Doyle picked up what many on the sideline felt was a harsh yellow card considering that the Ormond man came off the pitch with a nasty gash on the side of his head.  Banbridge cleverly took a five metre scrum in front of the posts and used their advantage in this area of the game to the full, driving over the line to touch down and leave the half time score at 7-7.

Again Nenagh started well in the second half and, although they didn’t dominate possession and territory to the extent that they had in the first half, they did leave several opportunities to score behind them.  In contrast, Banbridge continued to take points when they could, scoring two penalties to take them ahead by 13 points to 7.  In the final ten minutes, they scored again when Nenagh failed to control the ball in their own 22 and Banbridge pounced on the chance and took the try, leaving the final score at Banbridge 20-7 Nenagh Ormond.

Next up for Nenagh Ormond are Old Wesley who are currently top of the table and unbeaten in the League this season.  The lads travel to Dublin on Saturday for a 2.30pm kick-off.  Contact any committee member for bus details.

Under 13’s

Nenagh Ormond had twenty two Under 13’s togged out to play Kilfeacle at Tyone on Sunday last, January 25th, in our second match in the East Munster League.  The early exchanges saw most of the action around the middle of the park as both teams tested each other out.  However, with a very big pack, Kilfeacle started to gain the upper hand and after some sustained pressure close to our line they finally got over for an unconverted try.  This was followed by another try where their number 8 ran in under the posts to make the conversion a formality.

With half-time approaching we finally managed to break out of our own half. A couple of big carries from David O’Sullivan punched a hole up the middle from inside our own half and Jack Deane got over for a great team try.  The gusting breeze held up Hugh’s conversion and it fell short. The last play of the half saw a great try-saving tackle in the corner from Liam King which meant that after defending for long periods we were only seven points down at half-time but back in touch.

Kilfeacle started the second half on the front foot but excellent discipline in defence from all kept them out.  Leading by example again, Dylan Murphy tackled and carried like a demon throughout putting in a huge amount of work for the team.  From a scrum in our own half, it was his carry and offload to Liam King running a great support line that brought our second try.  Hugh Guest nailed a great conversion from a difficult angle to make it all square at 12 all heading into the final quarter.  At this stage our better fitness started to show but despite our dominance we could not find a way through for the winning score and frustratingly knocked on in the last play with the try line in sight. Overall this was a very positive team display, showing great character to come back from twelve-nil down.

Training continues Wednesdays from 18.30 to 20.00 in Tyone.
