Munster Junior Plate
Nenagh Seconds 15-10 Galbally

Nenagh Seconds hosted Galbally last Friday night in the Munster Junior Plate.  Nenagh got off to a flying start with an early try after receiving the kick off around their own 22.  They elected to run the ball and after several phases they flashed the ball to Willie Coffey who took off down the left touchline with a searing break.  He was caught just outside the Galbally 22 but managed to kick the ball ahead for Marek Gribs to come flying through for the try.

A few minutes later Nenagh made their way into the Galbally half and held onto possession well, eventually winning a penalty which they kicked to touch.  From the lineout they set up a ruck and Jamie Quigley picked at the back and peeled around the side to catch the defence off guard and rumble over.

With 20 minutes gone, Nenagh were in control and kicked into the Galbally 22.  The Galbally cover fielded the kick well but a great chase resulted in Darragh Hassey and Willie Coffey holding him up and Willie Coffey ripped the ball and sprinted to the line to put Nenagh 15-0 up and in the driving seat.

However, Nenagh seemed to take the foot off the gas after this and Galbally gradually came back into the game.  They scored two tries in the second quarter, the first out wide after they sucked in the Nenagh defence and the second after a sustained period of possession in Nenagh territory gave them a scrum on the 5 metre line.

The half time score was 15-10 to Nenagh and there was to be no further score in the match.  Nenagh soaked up a lot of pressure in the second half when Galbally threw everything at them and they did well to hold on to their lead.  This puts Nenagh Seconds through to the next round of the Munster Junior Plate, details of their next fixture TBC.  Stay tuned on our Facebook page and website where details will be available as soon as the fixtures are released.

East Under 16 Cup
Clanwilliam 19-26 Under 16’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 16’s got through the U16 Cup Quarter Final with a hard fought 26-19 victory away to a spirited Clanwilliam side on Sunday. Nenagh started well and a good backline move saw Cianan O’Hanliun cut through the gap in the centre to finish under the posts for a try which Fiachra Carey converted to give Nenagh an early seven point lead.  Nenagh failed to capitalise on early dominance and Clanwilliam came back into the game.  A good rolling maul from a line out led to a score near the Nenagh posts, which was converted to tie the game up at seven points each.

Nenagh went back in front after twenty five minutes when another good backline move saw speedy winger Luke Fahey outpace his opposite number to touch down in the corner and put Nenagh twelve points to seven up.  Clanwilliam came back again and some poor defensive work allowed their number eight to get down the blindside untouched to score in the corner.  This tied the game at twelve points each at half time.

Nenagh emptied the bench for the second half and the substitutes had immediate effect. Michael Bourke showed himself to be a very mobile prop by first of all making a thirty metre break  and then finishing off some good phases of play to burst through from the 22 to score under the posts. Fiachra Carey converted to put Nenagh nineteen twelve in front. Nenagh seemed to secure the game with ten minutes remaining when another good backline move, saw Luke Fahey again outpace the defence to score his second try. Fiachra Carey again converted to put fourteen points between the sides.

Nenagh were given a scare with five minutes remaining when a loose pass was intercepted on the half way line and the Clanwilliam player raced the length of the field to touch down to give the Clanwilliam lads some hope. The Nenagh lads held out however to finish out the game victorious by the score 26-19.

The squad who travelled were, Michael Bourke, Fiachra Carey, Luke Fahey, Conor Fahy, Darragh Flannery, Stephen Harding, Michael Kennedy, Sam Kroupa, Shane Mitchell-Steed, Daniel Molamphy, Orrin Moore, Tommy Murphy, Eddie O’Dwyer,  Cianan O’Hanliun, Jake O’Kelly, Seamus O’Meara, Martin Rainsford, Cathal Ryan, Peter Ryan, Cian Spillane, Tommy Wells, Aaron White.

Under 14 East Munster Cup Semi Final
Nenagh Ormond 17 – Waterpark 7

On Sunday in Nenagh, Nenagh took on Waterpark for the third time this season in the East Munster Cup Semi Final. On the two previous meetings this season Nenagh had come away with narrow victories and it was felt that Waterpark would come to Nenagh looking for revenge. From the start the Nenagh forwards looked really up for it and gave Waterpark no chance to settle into the match. After a good deal of Nenagh pressure and some hard rucking by the Nenagh forwards which released the Nenagh back line, left wing Peter Rainsford made some great early runs towards the Waterpark line. Nenagh continued to play good attacking rugby and with the forwards continuing to dominate the break down area they pinned Waterpark into their twenty two for the first ten minutes of the game. This early dominance was rewarded by a fine try by Kian O’Kelly who dived in following a maul close to the Waterpark line. The try was unconverted and the score seemed to spur Waterpark into action and they made a couple of attempts to attack the Nenagh line but Nenagh’s tackling which was extremely good all day kept Waterpark from scoring. Even though it was a beautiful sunny day and the conditions were perfect for rugby there was quite a few knock on’s and in the ensuing scrums Nenagh were very dominant and hooker Eoghan Slevin won at least four balls against the head during the match. It was following one of these scrums that the ball was sent down the Nenagh back line to right wing Matthew Hodgins who took the ball in space and beat a couple of Waterpark defenders to cross the line for Nenagh’s second try. Jack Moran converted this try to give Nenagh a very well deserved 12 – 0 lead at half time.

After the interval Nenagh once again took the game to Waterpark and there was some great driving runs from Nenagh forwards Oisín Webb and Luke Connolly. Nenagh were now putting a lot of pressure on the Waterpark line and following a five yard scrum and a well worked back row move Nenagh number seven Kian O’Kelly touched down for his second try of the day. Jack Moran narrowly missed the conversion but Nenagh now had a commanding 17 – 0 lead. However, Waterpark were not going to lie down and let Nenagh walk over them and shortly after the restart they drove up the field and even though Nenagh continued to tackle well Waterpark crossed the Nenagh line a few minutes later. This try was converted and Nenagh took a 17 – 7 lead into the last ten minutes of the game. The last ten minutes of the game were quite evenly balanced with both teams having opportunities to attack but it was the defences of both teams that won out and the final score remained at 17 – 7. This win puts Nenagh in to a cup final next Sunday against Galbally with the venue to yet be decided.

We would like to thank all parents and the Nenagh Ormond members who came out to support the players on Sunday and we would also like to thank all the parents who brought food and helped out in the kitchen on the day. Finally a big thank you to Tom Moylan who stepped in at very late notice to referee the game.

Under 12’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 12's who took part in a Pan Munster Rugby Festival in Rockwell College on Saturday morning.

15 members of the Nenagh Ormond Under 12 squad travelled to Rockwell College on Saturday for a Pan-Munster Rugby Festival.  The beautiful weather made it a perfect day for running rugby and the Nenagh lads did not disappoint, playing some great rugby in their three games against Muskerry, Kilrush and Skibbereen.

It was a good opportunity for these young players to test their skills against teams they would usually not have the chance of playing and they found themselves fairly evenly matched with one win, one draw and one loss on the day.

Thanks to Munster Rugby and Rockwell College for hosting a fantastic Festival which saw teams from all over the province take part.  Thanks also to all the parents who travelled and provided great support for the players as always.

Under 9’s & 10’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 9's and 10's at the blitz in Cashel on Sunday morning.

Nenagh Ormond Under 9's and 10's at the blitz in Cashel on Sunday morning.

Last Sunday 29 Under 9's and Under 10's travelled to Cashel RFC to take on the home side and Fethard RFC.  On a glorious Spring morning we divided our players into 2 teams of Under 10's and 1 team of Under 9’s.  On a super weekend for Irish rugby we played our part by playing some great running rugby, we tackled bravely and scored loads of great tries. Our thanks to Cashel RFC for the invitation.

This blitz marks the end of our season and we certainly marked it in style.  We have played and trained in many different pitches and weather since last September and we have watched this group of young players develop both personally and sporting wise.  There is a very strong team spirit within our camp, and this is becoming increasingly evident.

Our thanks to all the parents who have supported us in such numbers, and to the coaching staff, in particular Denis O'Meara who has brought such knowledge and rugby experience to bear on the players.  Our thanks to Martin Brislane, Paul Collins and the rest of the committee members for their help during the year.

A special thank you to each of our wonderful young players for giving us such enjoyable days out over the season, and on the weekend where the Irish Ladies team ruled supreme, I must make special mention of our 3 young girls, Ciara, Catriona and Isabelle who have become such an important and integral part of our Under 9 team.  It is our hope that we see all these players (and more) back in September for the new season.  We will have a final training session this Sunday - details to follow by text.

Under 8’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 8's with coaches Louis Manley and Baden Powell at the blitz in Cashel on Sunday last.

The NORFC Under 8's played in their final Blitz of the season away to Cashel on Sunday.  Fethard also featured in what was a great day of Rugby played in bright sunshine.  Nenagh fielded two teams on the day and all our players got plenty of game time, with Nenagh emerging triumphant in all games and thus finishing the season unbeaten.

The squad has gone from strength to strength during the season with a great improvement in running, passing and tackling.  A lot of new players have also been introduced to the game.

Coaches Louis Manley, Baden Powell and John Hogan would like to take the opportunity to thank all the players for their commitment during the season.  Their behavior was exemplary at all times and they are a credit to their families.  We would also like to thank the parents who travelled to games and supported the team throughout the season.

Munster ‘A’ v Ulster Ravens

Nenagh Ormond were delighted to host another Munster ‘A’ match at New Ormond Park last Thursday afternoon.  It was a beautiful evening and local rugby fans came to see present and future Munster and Ulster rugby stars play a very entertaining game in which Munster ‘A’ emerged victorious.

It was a pleasure to host this interprovincial match.  Thanks to Munster Rugby and to everyone who volunteered their time to help in the lead up to the game and on the day.
