Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 21-01-2014

Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV take on Navan RFC at home this Saturday, January 25th at 2.30pm.  This will be a good, tough game so if you are about why not come on out to support the lads.  Pre-match lunch and entry to the game is just €15, anyone wishing to avail of this deal, please contact any committee member (contact details on website: www.nenaghormondrfc.com).

Old Crescent 19-7 Under 18s

Our Under 18s travelled to Old Crescent on a wet Sunday evening to play their first Pan Munster fixture.  Crescent opened the scoring with a penalty and scored two more in the half to lead 9 nil at half time.

Cresent scored a try early in the second half to lead 14 nil and this was the push Nenagh needed.  From the kick off Nenagh gathered the ball and worked hard to make ground with some great work from the forwards and this was rewarded with a try and conversion to leave the score 14 points to 7.  Nenagh enjoyed plenty of possession but were unable to score.  Crescent then scored a late try against the run of play to finish the game 19-7.

Training continues Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm in Lisatunny.

Under 11s play in Thomond Park

On Sunday last the Nenagh Ormond Under 11s had the honour of playing at half time in Munster’s final Heineken Cup Pool game against Edinburgh.  21 players, along with their coaches Martin Brislane and Maeve D’Arcy (see photo above), set off from the post office at 11am for a day they will never forget.  There was both excitement and nerves to be felt on the journey in as the lads got ready to play in front of such a huge audience.

The Nenagh lads played Tralee Under 11s and did the club proud, their hard work earning them some great cheers from the Thomond Park crowd.  After the game, all 21 players met some of their Munster heroes who chatted with them, posed for pictures and signed jerseys, programmes and autograph books.  The players returned to Nenagh tired but delighted and a fantastic day out was had by all.

Thanks to all involved in organising this great day from both the club and from the Munster Branch and thanks in particular to the parents and families of the players, many of whom travelled on the day, whose support was greatly appreciated.

Under 13s 12 -8 UL Bohemians

Nenagh hosted UL Bohemians on Saturday morning in Lisatunny.  Nenagh got off to a strong start with the Nenagh forwards putting a huge amount of pressure on the UL Bohemians pack.  With some great rucking and mauling, Nenagh’s Jack O’Keeffe got over the line on two occasions but each time was held up.  UL Bohemians then started to get back in the match and used a very clever kicking game to try to put Nenagh on the back foot.  The Nenagh players soaked up this pressure and then started to attack again.  Nenagh were awarded a penalty on the UL Bohemians ten metre line and scrum half James Ferris took a quick penalty.  After a couple of good passes Matthew Hodgins finished off the move with a great run scoring under the posts.  Oisin Larkin converted to give Nenagh a well deserved 7 - 0 lead.

UL Bohemians bounced back very strongly and after a couple of good moves they ran in a well worked try.  The visitors then continued to attack and their efforts gained them a penalty which they converted just before half time giving them the narrowest of leads of 8 -7 at half time.

In the second half Nenagh came out very strongly again and the Nenagh forwards held their own in both scrums and line outs against a heavier UL Bohemians pack.  The display of the Nenagh forwards was even more impressive in that Nenagh had only eight forwards on the day with no substitutes available.  With the Nenagh forwards doing so well this allowed their backs to run at the UL Bohemians defence and they nearly got in on a couple of occasions.  However, it was once again down to the Nenagh forwards who kept themselves in the UL Bohemians twenty two for the last ten minutes of the game and continued to batter the Limerick team’s line until eventually Patrick Whelan got in for a great try.  With only a few minutes remaining Nenagh held out for a well-deserved victory.

Sincere thanks again to all the ladies who helped in the kitchen on Saturday and the parents who brought sandwiches and cakes.  Training continues on Wednesday evening at 6.30 p.m. in Tyone and we need our full squad in attendance.

Nenagh team: Peter Rainsford, Conor McMahon, Kevin Harding, Roan Harte-Murphy, Oisin Larkin, Owen Farrell, James Ferris, Patrick Finn, Jack O’Keeffe, Matthew Hodgins, Dylin Knight, Conor Malone, Daragh Butler, Oisin Webb, Patrick Whelan and Eoghan Slevin.

Under 14s

The Under 14 s had no on field action at the weekend but instead held a fundraising table quiz in aid of their upcoming trip to Barcelona.  This was held in the Ormond Hotel and was well supported by players and parents alike.

A word of thanks to all who helped out in providing prizes for the occasion: DK Travel, The Abbey Court Hotel, Philip Talbot and Seamus Darby's of the Greyhound in Toomevara.  A special word of thanks to Peter Ryan and all in the Ormond and to everybody who helped out on the night.

Training continues as normal in Tyone on Wednesday night at 7pm, weather permitting.
