Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV return to action this weekend when they make the long journey north where they take on Banbridge in the next round of Division 2A in the Ulster Bank League.  Kick-off is at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Please contact any committee member for bus details.

Nenagh Ladies 12-10 Shannon

Nenagh Ormond Ladies took on Shannon last Sunday in Lisatunny in their second game of the All Ireland Cup.  The two teams played earlier this season with Nenagh the victors but it had been Shannon’s first game of the League and the Limerick side went on to top the South section of Division 2 so Nenagh were expecting a tough challenge.  Nenagh opted to play into the wind and this, coupled with a shaky start, saw Shannon get an early score when they regained the ball from the kick off and worked into the Nenagh 22, cutting through the defence in the middle of the field for an unconverted try.

For the middle 20 of the first half, possession was equal enough, with neither team able to get the upper hand.  Then, in the final minutes of the half, Shannon won a penalty which they kicked to touch for a 5 metre lineout.  A few phases later they won another penalty for a ruck infringement which they took quickly.  They kept the ball tight through several phases and Nenagh worked hard to keep them out but eventually the pressure told and Shannon rumbled over the line to leave the half-time score at Nenagh Ladies 0-10 Shannon.

The Nenagh girls were not happy at half-time, feeling that they let the bad start get to them and they knew they had much more to give in the second half.  Genevieve Rowland, who had come on just after the break, gave the team good go-forward ball with her first few touches and the pack upped the tempo, with the rucking and support play much improved.  Nenagh finally got a foothold in the Shannon 22 and it was Rowland, after a convincing show and go, who cut the Shannon defensive line to go over the line and touch down.  Sandra Williams added the extras to bring Nenagh to within three points.

It was Williams who scored Nenagh’s second try with a fantastic break from her own half when she got through the narrowest of gaps and beat the covering defence, handing off three tacklers on her way to the try line.  This was to be the final score of the match, giving the Nenagh girls the narrowest of victories.  Final score Nenagh Ladies 12-10 Shannon.

This was a good win for the girls who have a break this weekend before resuming their All Ireland Cup campaign with a home fixture against Tralee on Sunday week.  Training continues every Wednesday and Friday night at 7.30pm in Lisatunny.  New players always welcome, contact Sandra on 087-7916690.

Cashel 5-22 Under 14’s

On Sunday Nenagh travelled to Cashel for the first of their East Munster cup games. Nenagh hit the ground running and from the early encounters the Nenagh forwards never allowed the Cashel pack to settle into the game. The Nenagh forwards dominated the early exchanges and nearly crossed the Cashel line on a number of occasions. However it was ten minutes into the game before the Nenagh forwards drove over the Cashel line with prop Eoghan Slevin being credited with the try. Even though Nenagh were getting the vast majority of the ball the cold day seemed to affect the Nenagh backs in particular and there was a lot of handling errors. The Nenagh forwards continued to out muscle the Cashel pack and following some great forward drives the ball was sent down the Nenagh back line with great speed and left wing Peter Rainsford got in for Nenagh’s second try. Jack Moran converted this try to give Nenagh a well-deserved 12 – 0 lead at half time.

After the interval Cashel did their best to get back into the game and for the first ten minutes of the second half put pressure on the Nenagh line however the Nenagh forwards then drove Cashel back into their own twenty two and with some great work in the tight Luke Connolly crossed the Cashel line for Nenagh’s third try. From the restart Cashel then brought the ball into Nenagh’s half and a few minutes later with some very poor tackling from the Nenagh players the Cashel centre crossed the line to make the score 17 – 5 with five minutes to go. The Nenagh forwards who had won so much good ball for their backs all day long decided it was time for them to once again get into the action and second row OisínWebb picked the ball from a ruck on the Cashel five metre line, broke a couple of tackles to score Nenagh’sfourth try on the day. The final score being Nenagh Ormond 22 - Cashel 5.

It was great to see so many Nenagh parents making the journey to Cashel on a very cold and frosty morning to support the players. Training continues on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. in Tyone.

Nenagh Team: Eoghan Slevin, Patrick Whelan, Luke Connolly, Ruan O’Hanluain, Oisín Webb, Dylan Murphy, Kian O’Kelly, Jack O’Keeffe, James Ferris, Owen Farrell, Peter Rainsford, Jack Moran, Roan Harte-Murphy, Conor McMahon, Oisín Larkin, Dylan Knight, Oisín McMahon, Danny O’Connor, Conor Malone, Patrick Finn, Kevin Harding and Lorcan Tuohy.

Under 15’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 15’s were in action on Sunday last in a friendly away to Bruff and with some league games coming up this turned out to be a very useful runout for this group of players.  Bruff started off very well by running in two early tries but the Nenagh lads quickly got in to the game and put some very good rugby together themselves which led to a great try being scored just before half time by Conor O’Brien.

The whole team played much better in the second half and got a lot more possession especially in the back line which led to another Nenagh try being scored by Colum Moylan.  Bruff eventually ran out winners by 5 tries to 2 but over all this was a very encouraging performance from this group of lads with some great tackling by Ronan Kelly, Colum Moylan and Eddie O’Dwyer while Conor O’Brien and Nathan O’Meara looked impressive with ball in hand.
