Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Thomond 33-20 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV made the short trip to Thomond on Saturday afternoon.  Both teams were looking for a badly needed win and, with close results in the past three meetings, both were expecting a tough game.  Nenagh started strongly, indeed it was just minutes into the game when the first score came.  Derek Corcoran took a pop from Mike Fogarty to break the defence and then strong carries in the 22 put Thomond under pressure.  After a couple of phases, scrum half Eoin Gardiner passed to Anthony Kavanagh who was coming at pace and he smashed through the defence to score.  Jack Molamphy added the extras.

Thomond then came back into the game with a try and penalty to put them one point ahead.  Nenagh did not panic and made their way back up the pitch where they won a penalty.  Gardiner spotted the opportunity and took a quick tap before popping to Mike Fogarty who made good ground before being tackled.  Nenagh were patient, going through the phases close to the Thomond line before Willie O’Connor powered through the tackle to touch down.  The back and forth continued for the second quarter and, although there were chances for both teams, the only score was a Thomond penalty just before the half time whistle to leave the score at 11-12.

From the kick off of the second half, Thomond came at Nenagh with renewed energy and, after holding them out for some time, Nenagh eventually conceded a penalty which Thomond kicked to take the lead.  Thomond dominated the majority of this half, adding three tries to their tally while Nenagh only managed a penalty.  Credit to Nenagh, at 33-15 down, they didn’t give up and spent the final minutes of the match on the attack in Thomond’s 22.  Finally, John Healy made a fine break and popped to Derek Corcoran for a try.  Unfortunately, time had run out for Nenagh and they were disappointed to come away without at least the losing bonus point.

Under 16s 5-22 Newcastle West Estuary

Nenagh Ormond Under16s continued their league campaign with a difficult home encounter on Sunday week last against a strong Newcastle West Estuary side.  On a perfect morning for rugby a reduced squad of 17 were available for selection.  Nenagh found themselves on the back foot for long periods against the physically bigger side. However they stuck to their task manfully and held Newcastle West to two unconverted tries for a 10-0 half time deficit.

The Nenagh boys started to gain some parity in the second half but two breakaway tries for Newcastle West left the score 22-0.  The boys kept up their workrate and eventually their hard work was rewarded when they crossed for a try which was well worked from touch line to touch line going through several pairs of hands.  Ronan Kelly got the final touch down to leave the final score at 22-5.

Despite the defeat there was much to admire in the boys performance and they will come back a stronger team.  Best wishes on a speedy recovery to Colum Moylan who took a knock during the game.

Team: Michael Bourke, Jack Dunne, Alex Hayes, Michael Kennedy, John Spillane, Eamon Hough, Orrin Moore, Stephen Harding, Nathan Deely-O’Meara, Ben Duff, Ronan Kelly, Darragh Flannery, Conor O’Brien, Colum Moylan, Eddie O’Dwyer, Daniel Molamphy, Luke Mooney.

U14 East Munster League
Under 14s 10-10 Thurles

The first of November is officially the first day of winter but the sun was gleaming down from a clear blue sky and temperatures reached the mid-teens at Tyone on Sunday morning as we ran out hoping for a third straight win that would keep the heat on the rest of the teams in our division.

Nenagh were first to strike for a well worked try as our handling skills allowed us to find gaps in the Thurles defensive line and our support play at the breakdown allowed us to gain the upper hand in the contact area. With clean ball coming from the rucks we eventually broke through for the opening try after ten minutes.

At this stage we were very much on top but a penalty kick which didn’t find touch was run back with intent and allowed the visitors to gain a foothold in our half and the momentum swung in their favour as they gained in confidence. Eventually they broke through for their opening score after their out-half put through a clever kick behind our defensive line that allowed their winger to gather and touch down for a well worked try.

The second-half followed a similar pattern to the first as we struck first and then Thurles equalised again. However, the final minutes saw us up the ante as we went in search of a winning score to keep our unbeaten run intact.  We very nearly got through for the winning try but a penalty to Thurles allowed them to kick to touch and escape with a share of the spoils.

We now await Kilfeacle at home next week in our final league fixture before the play-offs. A victory will probably guarantee us a home tie so this is a big game. We have a lot to work on in training on Wednesday night and it is very important that all players attend as we prepare for this fixture.

Team: Joe Cooney, Jake Clarke, Jack Deane, Cathal Delaney, James Duff, Luke Gleeson, Hugh Guest, Liam King, James Meagher, Rory Moylan, Eoin O’Meara, Anthony O’Donovan, David O’Sullivan, Sean Richardson, Aaron Ryan, Cathal Ryan, Danny Wilkinson.
