Senior XV
Nenagh Ormond 21-7 City of Derry

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV faced City of Derry at home last Saturday in the All Ireland League.  Having lost two and drawn one out of their last three league matches, there was a sense of determination to set things right from the kick off.  However, City of Derry were strong in the scrum and the first few minutes saw them dominate possession.  Nenagh’s defence was good though and they forced them back into their own half where Derry opted to kick.  The ball was fielded well by Nenagh winger Misi Salave who took off on a jinking run up the pitch and inside the Derry half.  Hooker John Healy was there to take the offload and from the resulting quick ruck scrumhalf Eoin Gardiner sent the ball out to the backs.  Mike Fogarty passed to Trevor Connolly who gave a lovely quick pass to Anthony Kavanagh just outside the Derry 22.  Kavanagh took off and showed good pace and strength to beat two defenders to score.  Dan Fogarty added the extras and Nenagh were looking good at 7-0 up so early in the game.

However, City of Derry fought hard and the game became a bit of a stalemate for much of the remainder of the half.  Nenagh looked more dangerous with ball in hand but it was Derry who got the next points just before half time.  From a lineout in the middle of the pitch, Derry worked their way into the Nenagh half and stretched the defence with some clever inside passes and offloads.  Eventually, they took a good line in the middle of the pitch and broke through to score under the posts, leaving the half time score at 7-7.

Nenagh had a dream start to the second half when second row Kevin O’Flaherty made a break up the middle of the pitch from just inside his own half.  Showing a great turn of pace, he made it to within metres of the try line where he offloaded out of the tackle to John Healy for Nenagh’s second try.  Fogarty again converted.  Nenagh’s hunger and intensity seemed to grow from this point on and they dominated the third quarter of the game.  Their third try came after captain Eoin Gardiner made a great decision to tap and go when awarded a penalty on the Derry 22, making good ground before passing to Trevor Connolly.  Both players held the defence well and Connolly’s pass to John Healy outside him was sublime, putting Healy over the line for his second try of the day.  Fogarty slotted the difficult conversion and Nenagh were well ahead at 21-7.

Nenagh continued to play with incredible intensity, sensing how close they were to a bonus point but unfortunately they didn’t get through again.  In the final minutes of the game, City of Derry came looking for their losing bonus point but, despite Derry throwing everything at them and Nenagh receiving a yellow card, they held out to deny the visitors.

Nenagh take a break from AIL for a couple of weeks and next up for them are Old Crescent at home in the Cyril Fitzgerald Plate on Saturday week, November 29th.

Under 14’s 21-10 UL Bohemians

Nenagh travelled to Limerick on Sunday morning to play UL Bohs in a friendly match. UL Bohs got off to a strong start and put a lot of pressure on Nenagh from the outset. Nenagh withstood the early onslaught and started to get into the match and with some strong rucking and mauling from the forwards the Nenagh back line started to put together some good movements and began to attack the UL Bohs line. However fifteen minutes into the match UL Bohs got in for a try. This seemed to spur the Nenagh players into action and the Nenagh forwards with Oisín Webb to the fore continued to drive at UL Bohs and were unlucky not to equalise before half time.

Nenagh had a full squad of players at their disposal and were able to bring on fresh legs in the second half and this allowed the Nenagh half backs James Ferris and Owen Farrell to make some great breaks that provided room for centres Jack Moran and Matthew Hodgins to punch holes in the UL Bohs defence. It was following one of these breaks that Matthew Hodgins got in for a try to level the score which full back Oisín Larkin converted to give Nenagh the lead. Nenagh now started to dictate the way the game was being played and the Nenagh backs continued to run at UL Bohemians and in a period of ten minutes centre Jack Moran crossed the UL Bohs line twice with both tries converted by Oisín Larkin to give Nenagh a well-earned 21 – 5 lead. Nenagh looked like they would go on from here to score more tries however this turned out not to be the case and it was UL Bohs who had the final say scoring a consolation try in the final couple of minutes to make the final score 21 – 10.

Nenagh travel to Kilfeacle next weekend for the last of their league matches before the knock out stages start. We hope that as many parents and supporters as possible can travel to Kilfeacle to give the players support in what is a top of the table clash.

Nenagh squad: Danny O’Connor, Eoghan Slevin, Oisín McMahon, Lorcan Tuohy, Conor Malone, Dylin Murphy, Dylan Knight, Oisín Webb, Kevin Harding, Roan Harte-Murphy, Matthew McGee, Jack Moran, Patrick Finn, Eoin Geraghty, Conor McMahon,  Ruan O’Hanluain, Jack O’Keeffe, Luke Connolly, James Ferris, Peter Rainsford, Matthew Hodgins, Oisín Larkin, Owen Farrell, Aaron Reilly.

Under 13’s v Roscrea

Nenagh hosted Roscrea on Sunday hoping to make it 3 wins on the trot.  Roscrea had a formidable pack and tore into Nenagh straight from the kick off and scored a try in the corner.  The breakdown was fiercely contested and Nenagh started to win some clean possession which saw them grow in confidence and move the ball wide where they had Roscrea in trouble.

David O Sullivan scored the try of the match that started in Nenagh’s half with several players involved.  The rest of the first half was even with Nenagh going toe to toe with Roscrea.

In the second half Roscrea dominated the set piece and Nenagh had to live off scraps but they defended manfully and fought for everything.  Roscrea scored a few more tries in the second half but the scoreline didn’t do justice to Nenagh. Considering the size of the opposition the lads can hold their heads high.

Again we had a great turnout and everyone got game time.  Thanks to Norman Carter for reffing the match at short notice.  Training continues on Wednesday at 18.30 in Tyone.  New players always welcome.
