Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 17/12/2013

Pictured is Ger O'Gorman presenting Nenagh Ormond president David Kennedy with a framed picture of the Nenagh team that gained promotion to Senior rugby before Nenagh's recent AIL game against Richmond.

Senior XV

Nenagh Ormond Senior team defend their plate title this Saturday when they take on Young Munster at 1.30pm.  The game takes place in Garryowen RFC in Dooradoyle.

Nenagh Seconds 8-5 Thomond

Nenagh Seconds won back to back league games when they defeated Thomond in Nenagh on Saturday by 8 points to 5pts.With gale force winds and after heavy rain, conditions were difficult.  However, an entertaining game was delivered even though the score board did not reflect this.  Nenagh have been struggling at times to field this season but after a good win against Richmond on their last day out and another good performance against Thomond they showed that the talent is there and hopefully will continue with the Junior Cup around the corner.

It was a mixture of youth and experience with six under 20s togging and growing in confidence as the season progresses. The young half back pairing of O’Leary and Carroll is now blossoming and shows promise for the future and it was these two players who were the teams scorers on the day.  Willie Carroll scored a first half penalty which was the only score of the half and Peter O’Leary finished off a great phase in the second half to put Nenagh 8 nil up.

Thomond replied with a consolation try in the last quarter but cannot complain as Nenagh were the deserving winners.  Best for Nenagh upfront were Mackey and Wallace and along with the half backs, Captain John Long and Denis Slattery formed a solid centre partnership.

Team: A Doyle, C Lucey, T McNamara, K O’Gorman, CComerford, S White, J Wallace, A Mackey, P O’Leary, W Carroll, S Quinlan, J Long, D Slattery, D Hassey, M Walsh, P Bourke, M Gribs, G O’Gorman, L Hayes

Nenagh Ladies 12-0 Shannon

Nenagh Ladies faced Shannon at home last Sunday in their last league game before the Christmas break.  The conditions were blustery and worsened when the rain began pelting down during the warm up.  This coupled with several injuries that forced players to start out of position meant the girls knew this would be their toughest game yet.

The girls started well, putting together some good phases and holding on to the ball despite the slippery conditions.  The first try came after some good work by the forwards, keeping the ball tight and showing good patience and control.  Marie Louise Ryan took the ball on the blindside and with great determination broke through a fairly solid defence to touch down.

Nenagh continued to have most of the possession but found it difficult to convert it into points due to both the conditions and some very good defence from the Shannon pack.  AislingO’Neill did get over the line during this period but the referee judged the ball to have been held up.  Shannon were living off scraps but they gave Nenagh a scare in the second quarter when they turned over the ball in a ruck and flashed it wide.  The Nenagh defence was far too narrow but thankfully the backs scrambled well to cover and push the Shannon winger into touch.  Nenagh’s second try was a great individual piece of play.  Genevieve Rowland, playing out of position atouthalf, made a fantastic break to touch down under the posts.  She converted her own try to leave the half time score at 12-0.

The second half was a scoreless, dogged affair.  The mucky conditions underfoot proved draining for both teams and the slippery ball did not help matters.  All credit to Shannon, without subs they were reduced to 13 in the closing minutes and they still managed to defend against a Nenagh team that were hungry for another score.  It was a tough, tough game and this Nenagh Ormond team showed the grit that this club is made of.  Well done in particular to the girls who changed positions at short notice.

The girls look forward to a short break now for the Christmas Holidays.  Training will resume on Friday, December 27th at 7.30pm with plenty of League and Cup action to look forward to in the New Year.

Under 16s 33-10 Presentation RFC

On Sunday last Nenagh U16s travelled to Presentation RFC in Limerick for a friendly game.  The ball was kicked off into the Nenagh pack and for the first 10 minutes it was a very balanced battle between the two teams. The Nenagh forwards worked very well and maintained their control as they worked steadily out of their 22 and up to the half way line.  TheNenagh forwards made a quick passing movement that sawJack Moloney go over the try line for the Ormonds. The try was converted by Mervyn Hayes. The Presentation pack were strong and Nenagh did very well in the lineouts and especially around the rucks. The Ormonds then forced Presentation back with some clever kicking from the backs and Nenagh scored a second try set up by Tommy Wells which was converted again by Mervin Hayes.  With a set piece in the lineout Jodie Mitchell broke through from the ensuing ruck to score a well-deserved try, making it 19 -0.  Presentation worked hard right through to half time and secured a well worked forwards movement to score their first try before half time which left the score at 19-5 to the Ormonds when the half time whistle blew.

In the second half Presentation regrouped and again Nenaghwere forced back into their own half with some clever mauling by the Pres forwards. The Nenagh XV defended well until a back line move by Presentation broke several tacklesfor them to score their second try of the day leaving the score 19-10. There followed a period of high intensity as both sides struggled to keep their feet as the sleet and rain fell to sendspectators scrambling for the cover of their cars. The NenaghXV continued to ruck and maul and with an intensity that seemed to force some Presentation handling errors. A quick opportunist penalty taken by Sean Smyth broke the presentation defence to score the 4th Nenagh try, converted byMervyn Hayes to make it 26 -10.

The Nenagh kicking strategy of the second half was forcing Presentation onto their back foot and allowed Alex Mosei to score an excellent follow up try that was again converted byMervyn Hayes. Nenagh had some excellent individual ball carrying that broke the Presentation defence on many occasions. The tackling and positional kicking by the backs was excellent and showed a very balanced Under 16 team with a lot of potential for the rest of the season. The final whistle blew 33-10 to Nenagh.

Under 13s 10 - 17 Galbally

Nenagh hosted Galbally in a league match on Sunday morning in Lisatunny.  Nenagh got off to a strong start and with the Nenagh forwards of Eoghan Slevin, Patrick Whelan, Luke Connolly, Conor Malone, Daragh Butler, Cian O’Farrell, Jack O’Keeffe, Dylin Knight and Cian O’Kelly being very dominant in the early part of the game. After a lot of Nenaghpressure and some fine rucking by the Nenagh forwards theNenagh backs moved the ball all across the back line and got new recruit Conor McMahon in for a try in the corner. Nenaghcontinued to play good attacking rugby but just before half time Galbally got in for a try which left Nenagh  7 – 5 down at half time.

Nenagh were playing into a strong wind in the second half and did well to keep the ball in hand and the forwards continued to play with great commitment which allowed theNenagh backs of Peter Rainsford, Owen Farrell, MatthewHodgins, Roan Harte-Murphy, James Ferris, Patrick Finn, Kevin Harding and Conor McMahon to put in some fine runs but it was not a day for flashy back movements and it was the dominant Nenagh pack who got in for a well-deserved second try after a huge amount of hard rucking and mauling. It was another newcomer to the team, Cian O’Kelly, who got the vital touchdown. Nenagh were then trying to hang on to a 10 – 7 lead but Galbally, with the wind at their back, continued to cleverly kick the ball deep into the Nenagh half and this allowed them to get two late tries and take a 17 – 10 win.

Once again sincere thanks to all the ladies who helped out in the kitchen on Saturday and the parents who brought sandwiches and cakes which were enjoyed by everybody.

Training continues this Wednesday the 18th of December and we are hoping to have a match on the 28th of December. On behalf of the coaches we would like to wish all the players and their families a very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

Mini Blitz

Under 12s

Nenagh travelled to Thurles on Sunday and played a very strong Thurles team. The game was played in conditions which weren’t suited to running rugby.  From the off, Thurleswere camped on the Nenagh line but from a turnover Nenaghwent the length of the field and scored. Thurles, who were a handful at the breakdown, scored twice and started to take control of the match but outstanding defence by Nenaghprevented them from pulling away.

Nenagh started to go through the phases and make some line breaks.  They scored two tries which levelled the match.  Great credit must go to Nenagh who played very well againsta physically bigger team.  Anthony O Donovan played his first match of the season and played very well.

Panel: James Meagher, Jack Deane, Luke Gleeson, PaidiWilliams, Anthony O’Donovan, Hugh Guest, Dylan Murphy,Ruari Moylan, Joe Cooney, Jack Meehan, Conor White, Danny Wilkinson, Sean Richardson, Kevin Cleary.

Under 11s

The Under 11s played Galbally in Thurles on Sunday morning in very cold conditions and recorded a 6 tries to 5 victory.Nenagh started very slowly and were second best to a hungrier Galbally team who led 3 tries to nil. After a stern half time team talk Nenagh were unrecognizable in the second half and showed what they can do when they put their minds to it. Quick rucks, hard tackling and some super running and passing led to some great tries.  With time up, the score level and the last play called, Nenagh attacked one last time and held onto the ball through many phases before working theball to Daire Slevin out wide who burst over in the corner for the winner.  The other try scorers were Liam Cooney, EoghanTighe, John Brislane and two for Andrew Ferris.

We would all like to thank Fogarty Concrete who have sponsored lovely tops for the team and coaches. The coaches would like to wish all the players and their families a very Happy Christmas.
