All Ireland Cup
St. Senan’s 17-5 Nenagh Ladies

Nenagh Ormond Ladies travelled to Shannon Town on Sunday last where they played their third All Ireland Cup game against St. Senan’s.  The girls started a little rusty after a long break and St. Senan’s were dominant in the opening ten minutes, retaining the ball well and keeping the pressure on in Nenagh’s half.  Nenagh scrambled well but St. Senan’s got over for the first try of the game and went ahead 5-0.

Nenagh seemed to get a second wind then and possession and territory were even enough in the middle 20 minutes.  Nenagh made good inroads at times but St. Senan’s defence was well organised and it was difficult to make any clear breaks.  Nenagh did score, however, when Senan’s gained possession just outside their own 22 and flashed the ball out to the backs.  Nenagh centre Annie Leahy showed great vision to read the pass and intercept and she beat the covering defence to the line to leave the half time score at 5-5.

The second half was a tough 40 minutes for the Nenagh girls with St. Senan’s superior fitness allowing them to dominate.  Nenagh spent the majority of the half defending and mostly inside their own half.  Tired legs led to turnovers when Nenagh did get their hands on the ball and to the concession of several penalties.  St. Senan’s kicked one such penalty to touch and set up a maul from the lineout about 15 metres out from the try line.  Nenagh did well to hold up the maul but with all the forwards tied in, a clever line from the Senan’s winger saw her burst through to touch down.

Senan’s later took a quick penalty inside Nenagh’s 22 and kept it tight for two phases, expertly sucking in the forwards before flashing the ball out to the wing for the score to secure a 17-5 win.

This was a tough match for Nenagh but several players did impress.  Sandra Williams made good ground with ball in hand and put in a fine display of tackling throughout the game.  Nicollette Finn carried well, Catherine McGill was hard-working as always and Therese Nolan continues to display grit and determination on the wing.  And finally, welcome back to Bob Ryan – it is great to see you back in Nenagh colours!

Next up for the Nenagh Ladies are Tralee at home this Sunday.

Team: Amy Ryan, Ciara McCullough, Annie Leahy, Breda Doheny (c), Therese Nolan, Sandra Williams, June Whelan, Bob Ryan, Catherine McGill, Nicollette Finn, Denise Williams, Grace Donovan, Helena Hanrahan, Anne O’Reilly, Marie Louise Ryan.  Reps: Paula McSweeney, Carol Lewis.

Munster Junior Plate
Nenagh Seconds 45-15 Bruff

Bruff travelled to Nenagh this weekend in a fixture for the Munster Junior Plate. Both teams came into this game with a loss the previous round in the Munster Junior Cup and both looking to come away with a well needed win.

Nenagh started out strong winning their own kick-off with some fine athleticism from Bryan Williams to regain the high kick-off and allow Nenagh to set the tempo. But poor discipline allowed Bruff to gain a foot hold in the Nenagh twenty two. Nenagh defended well but continuous pressure from a strong pack eventually allowed them to barrel over and draw first blood, leaving the score at 7 nil to Bruff 10 minutes in.

Nenagh were left with it all to do and once again regained possession from the kick-off which allowed the Nenagh pack with a mix of youth and experience to express themselves deep in Bruff territory. Strong carrying by John Healy, Aidan Doyle and Andrew Mackey allowed Nenagh to release their backs and spin it wide to put Marek Gribs in for his first of the game. Nenagh were unlucky to add again as some lovely interplay between Peter O’ Leary and John Healy cut open the Bruff defence only for a dropped pass on the 5 metre line to spoil it all. Continued pressure on Bruff throughout the first half allowed more tries from Marek Gribs and Willie Coffey to leave the half time score at 17-7 to the home side.

Nenagh started the second half with the same ambition and skill level as the first. Once again they spun the ball wide to send Mariks Gribbs over for his hat-trick. A small Bruff rising was finished with some fine tries by the Nenagh backs, one in particular coming from Nenagh’s young out-half, Darragh Hassey, who finished a fine try from his own 50 metre line after being unlucky to finish from 5 metres out earlier. Tries from Ger O’Gorman and Peter Ryan cemented a well deserved win for the home side who looked in excellent form and Darragh Hassey finished off the scoring in style with his second of the game.

Nenagh would like to thank the volunteers who provided the teams with some delicious soup and sandwiches after the game. Thanks also to everyone who came out to support.
Man of the Match: Marek Gribs.

Under 14s East Munster Cup
Nenagh Ormond 10-7 Waterpark

Nenagh hosted Waterpark on Sunday morning in Lisatunny in the third match of their East Munster Cup campaign. Nenagh got off to a strong start with the forwards controlling the game and putting a huge amount of pressure on the Waterpark pack. Nenagh spent the first ten minutes of the game in the Waterpark twenty two and after a series of five metre scrums and then a further penalty conceded by Waterpark both Oisín Webb and Luke Connolly went close to crossing the Waterpark line but were held up on each occasion. Waterpark from these early stages were tackling as if their lives depended on it and were determined not to let Nenagh cross their line. The Waterpark out half managed to put in some great relieving kicks from behind his own goal line.

With the Nenagh pack continuing to dominate the forward exchanges it allowed the back line to put some good passing movements together and on a couple of occasions in the first half the wingers Conor McMahon and Matthew Hodgins nearly broke free but once again fine Waterpark tackling did not allow them to score the vital opening try. As the first half was coming to an end Nenagh were still wining the majority of possession and with some great drives by the Nenagh forwards where Dylan Murphy and Ruan O’Hanluain were to the fore they still could not break down the Waterpark defence. The score at half time was nil all.

From the restart Nenagh once again continued to attack the Waterpark line and it looked like it would only be a matter of time before they managed to break the deadlock. Within five minutes of the second half second row Ruan O’Hanluain broke free and sprinted down the field and it looked like he was going to make it all the way to the try line.  However a very good tackle came in from a covering Waterpark defender just before the line and even though Nenagh managed to recycle the ball they still did not manage to cross the Waterpark line.

Waterpark then did launch a number of their own attacks but with some great tackling by number eight Kian O’Kelly and centres Jack Moran and Roan Harte-Murphy which did not allow Waterpark to go very far into the Nenagh half. Halfway through the second half Nenagh won a lineout just inside the Waterpark twenty two and the forwards drove for the line and Oisín McMahon dived in at the corner but his feet were just in touch and the try was disallowed. A couple of minutes later Oisín Webb took a great take at a lineout and dived over the Waterpark line however the referee had adjudged Nenagh to be offside at the lineout and once again the try was disallowed.

From the following lineout Nenagh once again won good ball and as the ball was moved out the back line one of the Waterpark centres intercepted a pass and ran the length of the field to score under the posts. The try was converted and totally against the run of play Nenagh found themselves 7 nil down with only five minutes remaining. Having dominated the majority of the game Nenagh now found themselves trailing with only a few minutes left. From the restart the forwards managed to win the ball and with a couple of great drives from Danny O’Connor and Eoghan Slevin the ball was then released to the backs and centre Jack Moran got in for a try very near the right touch line. He was unsuccessful in converting his own try.

Before the restart the referee stated that this would be the last play. The Nenagh pack gathered the ball from the restart and nearly every Nenagh forward got their hands on the ball and drove it one by one down the field to just inside the Waterpark twenty two where it was moved swiftly by half backs James Ferris and Owen Farrell up to second centre Roan Harte Murphy who weaved his way through the Waterpark defence to touch down for a truly magnificent try. Jack Moran missed the conversion but huge credit must go to this Nenagh team whose never say die attitude allowed them to score two tries in the last five minutes of the game for what can only be described as a quite breath taking win.

Once again thanks to all the parents and supporters who turned out in force to cheer the players on and also thanks to everybody who brought food and helped out in the kitchen on the day. Training continues on Wednesday in Tyone with a cup match away to Galbally next Sunday.

Under 13’s v Killaloe/Ballina

For our visit to play Killaloe/Ballina on Sunday last we were short a few key players and this eventually told as we went down by five tries to two.  We did play the more attractive rugby when we got our hands on the ball and moved it wide.  Our first try was a great team try finished off by outside centre Liam King who rounded the defence and got in to touch down under the posts.   Our second try came in the second half after sustained pressure by our forwards when Danny Wilkinson picked from the back of a ruck and used his strength to drive over through a wall of Killaloe players.

Other standout performances came from Cathal Ryan playing in his first match.  He showed great pace and strength when taking the ball into contact and gained a lot of yards for the team.  Sean Robinson also made huge ground with some very impressive carries.

Training  continues every Wednesday in Tyone at 6.30.  We have a big league game coming up in a couple of weeks against Thurles so it’s important that we all come to training and keep working hard on the basics of the game.
