Under 14’s 10-7 Galbally - East Munster Semi-Final

On Sunday in Lisatunny Nenagh hosted Galbally and their hard fought victory secured them a place in the East Munster League Final in the New Year. From the outset the Nenagh starting pack of Danny O’Connor, Eoghan Slevin, Luke Connolly, Dylan Murphy, Ruan O’Hanluain, Dylan Knight, Jack O’Keeffe and Kian O’Kelly looked really up for it and gave Galbally no chance to settle into the match. The Nenagh forwards put a good deal of early pressure on Galbally and with some really good rucking they began to release their starting pack line of James Ferris, Owen Farrell, Jack Moran, Roan Harte-Murphy, Matthew Hodgins, Peter Rainsford and Oisín Larkin. It was a cold wet morning in Lisatunny and all the Nenagh players should take great credit from their ball handling skills in such difficult conditions. The Nenagh backs ran some good passing movements however the Galbally backs continued to make the tackles and kept all the early Nenagh attacks out. The game was very evenly balanced throughout the first half and at half time the score of nil all showed how tight this game was.

From the start of the second half Nenagh once again continued to attack the Galbally line and it looked like it would only be a matter of time before one of the great charges from the Nenagh forwards would allow them to get over the line. However during one of Nenagh’s attacks in the Galbally twenty two the ball came loose and a Galbally centre managed to kick the ball behind the Nenagh defence and ran the length of the field to score under the posts. Nenagh having been the dominant team for a lot of the match now found themselves 7 nil down with fifteen minutes to go. From the kick off the Nenagh forwards put great pressure on their Galbally counterparts and did not allow Galbally to get out of their twenty two. There were great drives by Luke Connolly and Kian O’Kelly before number eight Jack O’Keeffe got in for a well-deserved try. Oisín Larkin narrowly missed the conversion which meant with ten minutes to go Nenagh had to score again if they were going to progress to the final. When Galbally restarted the ball was well retained by the Nenagh forwards and the Nenagh backs put in a couple of fine runs and then put a great kick into the Galbally twenty two. Nenagh won the line out and once again drove at the Galbally line. With the weather conditions the way they were the Nenagh pack correctly kept the ball tight and constantly drove at the Galbally line. This constant pressure was too much for Galbally and following another fine driving movement from the Nenagh pack Jack O’Keeffe got in for his second try of the day. With five minutes still to play Nenagh continued to attack and at the final whistle were once again in the Galbally half looking to add to their score. The final score was 10 -7 .

It is a great credit to the Nenagh team that they managed to close out such an important match with a place in the league final at stake. Nenagh are now due to play Waterpark in the League Final on the 4th of January, 2015 with the venue still to be confirmed.

We would like to thank all the parents and members of Nenagh Ormond who attended the match and cheered our players on to a memorable victory. This support has been fantastic throughout the season. Also we would like to thank everybody who brought sandwiches and cakes on the day and for the ladies who helped out in the kitchen. Training continues this Wednesday the 17th in Tyone.

Under 16’s

Nenagh Ormond once again were able to field two teams at under sixteen level simultaneously on Sunday away to both Kilfeacle and Cashel

Some last minutes cry-offs left both squads stripped to the bone but both teams performed admirably. Our second team travelled to Cashel and put up a very brave performance with an experimental side and managed to score three tries of their own, before going down to the more experienced Cashel side. Again most of the squad were either under 15 or still new to the game of rugby. Scrum half Nathan Deely O’Meara and outhalf Ben Duff were pick of the bunch in an admirable performance.

The squad that travelled to Thurles was Seamus O’Meara, Aaron White, Ray O’Meara, Sam West ,Patrick Ryan, Nathan O’Meara, Ben Duff, Ronan Kelly, Colum Moylan, Peter Folan, John O’Meara and Mark O’Neill

Meanwhile our fist team travelled to Kilfeacle in a league play off and were victorious 12-8 in a very hard fought contest against a very spirited Kilfeacle side.

The game was very tight for most of the first half with hard tackling being the order of the day. Playing with the wind in the first half Nenagh scored the only try of the first half after twenty five minutes. Following a series of breaks from the base of the ruck, Cathal Ryan managed to dive over near the touchline. Fiachra Carey converted magnificently from the touchline in very windy conditions to put Nenagh 7 points to nil up at half time.

Kilfeacle, playing with the wind in the second half were a different proposition. And scored a try of their own ten minutes into the half. A quickly taken penalty from outside the 22 was spread out wide for a very well worked try in the corner which was unconverted. Kilfeacle began to get on top and used the wind to their advantage. A penalty put them 8-7 up with ten minutes remaining. However the Nenagh boys never gave up and after withstanding more Kilfeacle pressure, Nenagh made a good break up field and following a series of penalties, a good flowing move saw Shane Mitchell-Steed touch down in the corner to put Nenagh 12-8 in front.

Nenagh closed out the game with some solid defence and in truth there was little between the sides at the end of this highly entertaining encounter where both sides gave their all.

The squad that travelled to Kilfeacle was Michael Kennedy. Tommy Wells, Michael Bourke, Cathal Ryan, Peter Ryan, Stephen Harding, Orrin Moore, Jake O’Kelly, Martin Rainsfort, Daniel Mollamphy, Shane Mitchell-Steed, Cianan O’hAnlúain, Fiachra Carey, Eamon Hough Conor O’Brien

Training will break for Christmas on Tuesday 16th December and will recommence on Tuesday 30th December

Mini Training

The N.O.R.F.C. Age-grade section had their final training session in the Ballymackey F.C. All-weather facility on Sunday last.
The facility is proving to be very popular with the players and their passing, running and support skills are improving week on week.
News has even reached the North Pole and Santa himself took time out from his busy schedule to come and see for himself.

The coaches would like to wish all the players and their families a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year and to thank everyone for their support to-date. We would also like to wish our friend and Community Rugby Officer, Pat Fitzpatrick a speedy recovery from his recent illness.

Training resumes on Sunday Jan. 11th.
