Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 15-01-2014

Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV resumed their AIL campaign last Saturday when they travelled to Sligo. Conditions and a bit of rustiness after the break both contributed to make a tough game out of it but the Nenagh lads managed to come away with a win. Tries came from Ger Hermse, John Coffey and Jack Donovan while Dan Fogarty slotted three penalties to leave the final score at Sligo 20-24 Nenagh Ormond.

Next up for the lads are Navan on Saturday week, January 25th at home. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

Old Crescent 12-24 Nenagh Seconds

Nenagh Ormond Seconds made the short journey to Limerick last Sunday where they faced Old Crescent in the Senior Seconds League. The heavy rain, which stopped just before kick off, meant that it was not a day for fast, free-flowing rugby. However, the lads did manage to put together some good phases at times and the handling errors were fewer than one would have expected given the slippery conditions.

Nenagh’s Thomas McNamara opened the scoring with an early try which was unconverted. Soon after, he scored a second try when a strong, organised lineout maul saw Nenagh make good ground in the Crescent 22. McNamara broke from the back of the maul and powered over the line. Michael Walsh converted. Before half time, Nenagh got possession in their own half and, after some strong carries from the forwards, John Long broke through to score. Walsh again converted to leave the score 0-17 at half time.

The early part of the second half saw Nenagh keep control, culminating in a try out wide for Darragh Hassey which was converted. However, Crescent didn’t give up and the last twenty minutes saw Nenagh defending for long phases. Crescent worked hard and scored two tries in this period to come back to 12-24 at full time. This was a tough game with conditions underfoot making every inch hard work but the lads dug in to get a good win away from home.

Team: Hugh Maloney, Bruce Hayes, Shane Quinlan, John Long, Darragh Hassey, Michael Walsh, Peter O’Leary, Paudie Bourke, Thomas McNamara, Damien Dunne, Colin Feely, Kevin O’Gorman, Sean White, John Wallace, Kevin Seymour. Reps: Ger O’Gorman, Willie Carroll.

Under 14s v Bruff

The Nenagh Under 14s hosted Bruff in a friendly in Tyone last Sunday in very wet conditions. This was a chance for the coaches to give the extended squad some game time and many of the lads acquitted themselves well, especially Orrin Moore and the always reliable Ray O’Meara. The more settled Bruff side got in for two early tries but Nenagh regrouped and eventually Ray O’Meara forced his way over before half time.

The second half started off a little disjointed with players rolling on and off the field of play and Bruff scored another try early in the half. Then Nenagh hit back with a great score from another prop forward Mikey Bourke who won a turnover on the half way line, dummied twice and then kicked ahead to race clear and dive Chris Ashton-style over the line for the best try seen in Tyone for some time. However, the celebrations, which could be heard in Templederry, had barely died down when Bruff got in for another try and managed to hold out to go on and win the match.

Overall it was a good day out for Nenagh with a number of players making an impression for the big matches to come and the whole squad getting a run out. Training continues as usual on Wednesday night at 7pm in Tyone.
