Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 13/11/2013

Nenagh Ormond Ladies 27-10 Fermoy

Nenagh Ormond Ladies played Fermoy at home last Sunday in the League.  Having not had a match for the previous four weekends, the girls were a little rusty in the first ten minutes, which they spent mostly inside their own half.  Their defence was good and several good steals in the lineout by June Whelan meant that Fermoy were denied for some time.  But the pressure told and Fermoy came away with the first try which was converted.

This did not sit well with the Nenagh girls who have a good record at home and they came out all guns blazing from the kick off.  The hard work of the forwards to secure their own rucks allowed Nenagh to make good ground and when they got into the Fermoy 22 some great ball handling from Breda Doheny, Genevieve Rowland and Sinead Hennessy saw Rowland go over for a try.

Trailing 5-7 at half time, Nenagh were determined to up the tempo in the second half and they did this in style.  Just minutes into the second half, Genevieve Rowland picked from the base of the scrum and passed to winger Breda Doheny who managed to pop it back to her for Rowland to score.  Then Nenagh full back Anna Nolan caught a Fermoy garryowen and ran back hard, making huge ground before off-loading to Sandra Williams who scored.

Behind by 8 points, Fermoy were determined to get at least a losing bonus point and they worked their way up the pitch into the Nenagh half where they won a kickable penalty, leaving the score at 15-10.  Nenagh responded to this with some truly clinical play and both Williams and Rowland got over the line again for the score to finish at 27-10 to Nenagh.

This was a great performance from the ladies who are now at the top of the Division 2 South Table with a game in hand over their closest competitors.  Special mention must go to Catherine McGill who stepped in at hooker and more than acquitted herself and to player of the match Sinead Hennessy whose work rate was outstanding.

Next up for the Ladies are New Ross who we play at home this Sunday at 1pm.  Training continues every Wednesday and Friday night at 7.30pm in Lisatunny.  New players always welcome.  Contact Eithne on 087 2940928 for details.

Team:  Anna Nolan, Breda Doheny, Caroline Cahalan, Sandra Williams, Niki Lillis, Emma Dunlea, June Whelan, Marie Louise Ryan, Catherine McGill, Vanessa Chadwick, Aisling O’Neill, Denise Williams, Jennifer Donovan, Sinead Hennessy, Genevieve Rowland (capt).

Kilfeacle 12-5 Under 16s

On Sunday last a panel of 24 players were waiting in Tyone for the under 16 league game.  At 9.30 the convoy of parents left Tyone on a fresh breezy morning.

On arriving at Kilfeacle it was straight down to a comprehensive Nenagh warm up and the Nenagh starting XV were ready to play.  The ball was kicked off into the Kilfeacle pack and for the first 10 minutes it was a very balanced battle between the two packs.  The Nenagh forwards worked well and maintained their control as they steadily made their way out of their 22 and up to the half way line.  The Kilfeacle pack were strong and Nenagh did well to hold them up especially around the rucks.  The Ormonds then forced Kilfeacle back with some clever kicking from the backs and Nenagh secured a line out just inside the opposition 22 metre line.  With a set piece in the line out Mervyn Hayes broke through the front of the line out to score a textbook try.  Kilfeacle worked hard right through to half time with Nenagh parked on the 5 meter line and held the Ormonds out to see the half time whistle blow at 0-5 to Nenagh.

In the second half Kilfeacle regrouped and again Nenagh were forced back into their own half with some clever out-half kicking.  The Nenagh 15 defended well until a back line move by Kilfeacle saw them break several tackles to score their first try of the day leaving the score 5-5.  There followed a period of high intensity as both sides struggled to take the lead.  The Kilfeacle XV continued to ruck and maul and tackle with an intensity that seemed to force some Nenagh handling errors.  These were punished with some clever kicking from Kilfeacle which forced Nenagh onto their back foot.  Nenagh had some excellent individual ball carrying that broke the Kilfeacle defense on many occasions.  However a well-placed kick over the Nenagh backs and over the try line saw a determined Kilfeacle opportunist try which was duly converted leaving it 12 -5.  The final whistle blew 12-5.

Under 14s 12-15 Kilfeacle

Nenagh and Kilfeacle resumed their rivalry on Sunday last when they met in the East Munster League in Nenagh.  The two served up a very entertaining match with a very high skill level displayed  on both sides.  The game started with a strong Kilfeacle attack which saw them get in for an early try in the corner and they added a penalty soon after to race into an eight-nil lead.  But the Nenagh forwards knuckled down and won some good ball from a turnover and, after some great pressure, Alex Hayes barged over.  Even after the missed conversion Nenagh were right back in the game.

A couple of minutes later the Nenagh forwards again won good ball and moved it quickly out to Evan Murphy who  sprinted clear of all tackles and touched down under the posts.  Ben Duff converted to give Nenagh a 12-8 lead at half time.  The Nenagh lads piled on the pressure in the second half with some good rugby but they just couldn't seem to get over for that crucial score.  Late on Kilfeacle struck with a breakaway try from their own half which was converted to  send them in to the lead.

In the end the nenagh lads came up just short by 15 points to 12 but still have a quarter final to really look forward to in three weeks time having so far put in some great displays in this league.

Training continues at 7pm sharp in Tyone every Wednesday night.

Under 13s 17-15 Roscrea

Nenagh Under 13s hosted Roscrea on Saturday morning in Lisatunny.  Nenagh got off to a strong start and were putting a huge amount of pressure on Roscrea.  However, against the run of play Roscrea got a breakaway try to put them into an early lead.  With the Nenagh back row of Jack O’Keeffe, Cian O’Farrell and Dylin Knight putting in some great tackling and winning good ball in the rucks, the Nenagh half backs Peter Rainsford and Owen Farrell were able to get their back line moving.  There were good early attacks from wingers James Ferris and Oisin Larkin.  Once again when Nenagh were attacking Roscrea managed to set up a counter attack which culminated in their second try.

The Nenagh tight five of Oisin Webb, Patrick Whelan, Eoghan Slevin, Luke O’Gorman and Conor Malone were very strong in the scrum and also dominated the line out.  Just before half time a great Nenagh back line move allowed centre Roan Harte-Murphy to pass to Manus Heenan and on to Oisin Larkin who put in a lovely grubber kick and after a great chase got the touch down ahead of the Roscrea defenders.  This left Nenagh 10 – 5 down at half time.

After half time Nenagh brought on some fresh players including Patrick Finn, Kevin Harding, Lorcan Tuothy and Oisin McMahon.  This seemed to give Nenagh some new impetus and within five minutes of the restart Matthew Hodgins picked up a ball on his own 22 and ran the length of the field to score a great individual try and bring Nenagh level.  Roscrea then came back very strongly and scored a fine try to once again take them into the lead.  With only three minutes on the clock Peter Rainsford got the ball on the Roscrea 22 and with some trademark scrum half jinks and dummies scored a great try under the posts.  Oisin Larkin converted to give Nenagh a well-deserved 17 - 15 win.

Mini Blitz

Birr RFC hosted a very enjoyable blitz for our Under 8s, 10s, 11s and 12s last Sunday.  On a perfect morning for rugby all teams enjoyed a good runout and a great morning’s rugby.  Our thanks to Birr for inviting us over and for their hospitality afterwards.

Under 12s
Nenagh travelled to play Birr on Sunday and the match was played in perfect conditions.  Nenagh made the better start and their passing and movement was causing problems for the Birr defense.  Ruari Moylan played his first match for the club and scored two great tries to give Nenagh an early lead.  Further tries from David O’Sullivan and Luke Gleeson put Nenagh 5 – 3 ahead.
Birr got stronger as the match went on and drew level.  The Nenagh defence was put to the test when Birr made some serious drives for the line but some great tackling held them out. The match finished all square at 5 tries each.
Players for Nenagh;
Jack White, Ruari Moylan, Paudi Williams, David O Sullivan, James Meagher, Eoin O Meara, James Duff,
Danny Wilkinson, Jack Deane, Luke Gleeson, Dylan Murphy, Conor White, Kevin Cleary, Hugh Guest.

Under 11s
The Under 11s played a blitz in Birr last Sunday morning.  Seventeen players togged out and they played Portumna in the first game.  A super all round performance saw Nenagh win by five tries to nil. We saw great handling and great commitment.
After a break of half an hour we faced Birr and whether over confidence or lack of concentration set in, we struggled to a nil all draw.  The nearest Nenagh came to a score was from a great break from Sean Fitzgerald playing his first ever rugby game and he was unlucky to be caught inches from the line.  Well done to everyone.
Panel: Jack Gleeson, Patrick Fogarty, Daire Slevin, Sonny Dower, John Brislane, Andrew Ferris, James Finn, Evan Rainsford, Jamie Cottrell, Liam Cooney, Martin Ryan, Tom Kennedy, Barry Ryan, DJ McGrath, Eoghan Tighe, Peter Collins and Sean Fitzgerald.
