Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 12/04/2015

UBL Division 2A
Nenagh Ormond 26-14 Rainey OB

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV were at home to Rainey Old Boys in their final match of the Ulster Bank League on Saturday.  Division 2A has been a hard fought league this year and it was close right to the end.  Nenagh needed to win to secure a top ten place in order to keep them in this division for next season.  In the end they got a bonus point win but it was a close affair for the first 50 minutes.  In the opening ten minutes Nenagh did look stronger but Rainey also had some good possession and it took time for them to settle into the game.  When they did they played some good rugby and it was Kevin Seymour who made the initial break before passing to Mark Doyle.  When Doyle was tackled metres from the line Fergal Brislane was there in support straight away to take the pop and score.  Dan Fogarty converted and Nenagh were 7 ahead.

However, Rainey regained possession and pressed hard in Nenagh’s territory and when Nenagh had a lapse in concentration they took full advantage, scoring under the posts and adding the extras to even it up.  There was no score after this until just before the half time whistle when John Long caught Rainey’s clearance kick inside the touchline.  He passed to Mark Doyle who ran it back and beat several defenders before scoring Nenagh’s second try.  Dan Fogarty converted to leave Nenagh 14-7 ahead at half time.

The first ten minutes of the second half were tough to watch for Nenagh supporters with several lineouts not going to plan and Rainey having the majority of the possession.  Rainey again scored through the middle with a couple of missed tackles gifting them the score to bring it back to a draw at 14-all.  But Nenagh seemed to focus after this and showed great determination in the final 30 minutes of the match.  After a good lineout in Rainey’s 22, Nenagh worked the blindside for a few phases before passing the ball out.  When it came to Dan Fogarty, he spotted a sliver of a gap and burst through it to score.  Fogarty was also involved in the final try after John Long again caught a clearance kick before it reached touch and Fogarty broke down the centre of the pitch.  Just as the defenders were closing in, he passed to Anthony Kavanagh who stormed in under the posts.  Fogarty slotted his third conversion to leave the final score at 26-14.

This win secured a top ten finish for Nenagh and a place in Division 2A for next season.  Well done to players, coaches and management on doing so well in our first season in this Division.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the final pre-match lunch on Saturday, especially all the past Club Presidents who attended.  Thank you to everyone involved in the club for your time and effort throughout the season: players, coaches, managers, sponsors, members, supporters and both our Senior and Juvenile committees.  Without you the club could not survive and we appreciate all your support.

Munster Junior Plate

Nenagh Seconds 3-9 Skibbereen

Nenagh Ormond Seconds were at home to Skibbereen on Sunday last in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Plate.  Nenagh started brightly and looked to be the better team in the first ten minutes, keeping possession well and playing inside Skibbereen’s half.  Skibbereen gave away several penalties in this period and eventually conceded one within kicking distance which Michael Walsh slotted to put Nenagh ahead 3-0.

The middle 20 minutes of this half were scoreless and Nenagh seemed to lose momentum, conceding several turnovers and allowing Skibbereen to settle into the game.  This was frustrating for Nenagh who could not seem to take control of the game, the end result of which was a penalty which Skibbereen kicked with ease, followed by another 3 points just before half time and a yellow card for Nenagh.

Again in the second half, the first ten minutes was all Nenagh but again they let Skibbereen back into it with several penalties giving Skibbereen a foothold in Nenagh territory.  The only score of the half was another Skibbereen penalty and, although Nenagh did revive in the final quarter to play some good rugby, they couldn’t strike the killer blow to secure a win.  Final score Nenagh Ormond Seconds 3-9 Skibbereen.

Well done to our Second Team players and coaches for making it this far in the competition.  The lads were disappointed after the game but they can be proud of their efforts this season and we hope they will all be back in the red and white next year.
