Under 18 East Munster Plate Final
Nenagh Ormond 33 – Cashel RFC 0

Nenagh Ormond Under 18 team won the East Munster Plate in emphatic style against a very game Cashel outfit in horrendous conditions in Clanwilliam on Sunday.

Playing with the gale force wind in the first half Nenagh were unable to make use of the conditions as Cashel held out for most of the half. With the score at nil-nil on the stroke of half-time, the signs were ominous for the Nenagh lads as Cashel would have been confident of using the wind advantage in the second half. However, with the last play of the half, Jack Moloney picked from the base of a five-metre scrum and powered over for a decisive score. Mervin Hayes kicked the conversion to leave Nenagh only seven points up facing the gale force wind in the second half.

For the second half, the Nenagh lads reverted to the tried and trusted “up the jumper” style of rugby against the wind and held Cashel at bay with some heroic defending. After 10 minutes of the second half, a good break by Mervin Hayes, followed up by substitute Darragh Oxley, saw the ball popped out to Tommy Wells on the Cashel 22 and he powered through to touch under the posts for a great score. Darragh Oxley converted to put Nenagh 14 points up.

The concession of this score with the elements in their favour seem to cause the Cashel lads to drop their heads and within 3 minutes Nenagh stretched their lead when Jack Moloney was at the end of another forward multi-phase play to touch down in the corner to put Nenagh 19 points to nil up. Darragh Oxley was unlucky when his kick from the touchline against the wind hit the post.

Despite the deficit Cashel continued to battle gamely but handling errors were to be their downfall. From such an error inside the Nenagh 22, with ten minutes remaining, the ball was spread out wide and Scott Harvey raced from inside his own half to touch down under the posts, giving Darragh Oxley the easy conversion to stretch Nenagh’s lead to 26 points. Nenagh scored their fifth try with five minutes remaining when man of the match Tommy Wells, picked up a loose ball at the base of the ruck inside his own half and rounded the Cashel winger and outpaced the defence to score in the corner from 60 metres. Darragh Oxley completed the icing on the cake when his conversion from the touchline against the gale force wind dropped just over the crossbar.

The final whistle was met with scenes of jubilation from the Nenagh lads when a season blighted by many injuries finally saw silverware.

Following the match, Morgan Mooney of East Munster Youths presented the East Munster Plate to Nenagh Captain Mervin Hayes to the obvious delight of the Nenagh lads.
