Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond continue their league campaign this Saturday, February 15th when they make the short trip to Thomond for a 2.30pm kick off.

If anyone wishes to travel, bus leaves the Abbeycourt Hotel at 12pm sharp.

Under 20’s 23-6 Midleton

Nenagh Ormond Under 20’s played Midleton at home last Saturday.  The wind and rain made conditions difficult but the lads put in a good performance to get a comprehensive win over the visitors.  The first score went to the Nenagh forwards and came from a well-taken lineout followed by a strong maul.  Soon after, Dan Finnerty slotted a penalty to take the score to 8-0.

Nenagh were on top for most of the game and when awarded a scrum just outside the Midleton 22 Andrew Mackey picked from Number 8 and, having pulled in a few defenders, passed to scrumhalf Peter O’Leary who drew the final defender and put Ger O’Gorman through for the score.  Midleton got on the scoreboard with a penalty of their own not long before half time.

The second half saw Nenagh consolidate their hard work with a try from Eamonn Healy, which was converted, and another penalty.  Again in this half, Midleton took 3 points and the final score was 23-6 in favour of Nenagh.  Next up for the Under 20’s are Dolphin away on February 22nd.

Under 18’s 5-15 Cork Constitution

Our Under 18’s had their last Pan Munster game in Tyone on Sunday morning against Cork Constitution.  In what can only be described as very heavy conditions, Nenagh battled well against the wind but as the half drew to a close Cork Con finished strong to lead 12 points to nil.

Nenagh came strong in the second half and played all the rugby in the Con half.  The one and only time Con got in to the Nenagh half they won a penalty in front of the post and converted to lead 15 nil.  From the kick off Nenagh chased and gathered and put Con to the sword to score a well-deserved try in the corner.  The final score was Nenagh 5-15 Cork Con.

All credit to the lads also a big thank you to the parents who helped out in the kitchen after the match.  Happy birthday to Liam Finn who celebrated his 18th this week.  Also congratulations to our newest team member Neil Bergin fresh off the bench to score a try with his first touch of the ball.  Training Tuesday night at 7.30pm.

Under 14’s News

The Under 14’s were recently in rugby action in the very unusual surroundings of Barcelona when the players coaches and a number of parents recently visited the city after taking up an invite from the local club.  The rugby action began early on Saturday morning at the local community owned pitch and the Nenagh lads were rearing to get started as the astro-turf was something of a novelty.  The first game up was Nenagh against the Barcelona side and the local’s tradition of playing just 13-a-side at this age level with a slightly narrower pitch was proving somewhat difficult for the Ormond lads to adapt to.  Both sides, however, played some very good rugby with the home team eventually winning the day by 3 tries to 2.

The second game of the morning against a neighbouring club with an unpronounceable Spanish name saw the 15-a-side format restored and it showed with Nenagh getting in for two early tries.  This dominance however was short lived as the all-weather pitch was beginning to take its toll and the local side got back in the game with  a couple of well taken scores.  As Nenagh were running out of subs at this stage the local side were running in for the winning score and were quite pleased with themselves.

The Nenagh lads acquitted themselves very well over the course of the two games and the whole squad bonded really well together.  There was a very high skill level displayed by some of the local Spanish players some of whom may well play at a higher level in the future.

Well done to all the Nenagh lads for a great morning of rugby and especially for their impeccable behaviour for the duration of the tour.

Galbally 12 – 10 Under 13s

On Sunday Nenagh travelled to Galbally for their first league game of the new year.  The first quarter of the match was very even and with the conditions very heavy underfoot it was a day for the forwards to battle it out.  The Nenagh forwards were scrummaging very well and were winning their own lineout.  However just before half time Galbally got in for a try and took a 5 nil lead into the interval.

Nenagh dominated the early play in the second half and with some great driving by all the Nenagh forwards Luke Connolly got in for a well-deserved try to bring the scores level.  Nenagh continued to play the game in Galbally’s half however, totally against the run of play, Galbally managed to score a breakaway try which they converted to take a 12 -5 lead. This try being totally against the run of play gave Nenagh some new impetus and within five minutes of the restart the Nenagh forwards and backs had combined very well to drive the ball all the way up the field.  With some great handling between the forwards and the backs scrum half James Ferris got in for a great try.  The try was not converted and with time not in Nenagh’s favour they continued to batter the Galbally line to get the score that would give them victory but they were unable to get the score they needed and went down by a very narrow margin of 2 points.

This Nenagh Under 13 team have been very unlucky in that they have lost a couple of very close matches but once again on Sunday they showed great determination and fighting spirit and it was they who were attacking the Galbally line seeking the win right to the end of this match.  It was also great to see so many of the Nenagh parents travelling to support the players and it gives the boys great encouragement when they see their parents cheering them on on the side line.  We would hope to have matches most weekends for the next few weeks and it is therefore very important that all players attend training on Wednesday evenings at 6.30 p.m.  Anybody who is not able to attend training or a match should let Dinny know as early as possible.

Nenagh team: Manus Heenan, Patrick Finn, Kevin Harding, Conor McMahon, Matthew Hodgins, Owen Farrell, Peter Rainsford, James Ferris, Jack O’Keeffe, Cian O’Kelly, Dylin Knight, Conor Malone, Daragh Butler, Oisin Webb, Luke Connolly, Patrick Whelan, Eoghan Slevin, Oisin McMahon.

Donal Walsh #Livelife

Last Friday afternoon, a group of Transition year students from Tralee who were walking from the Aviva stadium to Thomond Park in memory of their fallen schoolmate the late Donal Walsh were welcomed to Nenagh Ormond RFC.  While travelling they were collecting for the Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation, Crumlin Medical Research Foundation and Tralee RFC.

They arrived early in the afternoon after walking from Roscrea and Donal’s father spent the afternoon speaking to students in the Christian Brothers Secondary School, St. Mary’s Secondary School and Nenagh College.

The group enjoyed their stay in Nenagh and left well rested on Saturday morning to complete the final leg of their journey to Thomond Park.  The club would like to thank everyone who contributed to making their stay possible.
