Old Crescent 24-18 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV began their competitive season on Friday night last when they travelled to Old Crescent for the first round of the Charity Cup.  Old Crescent will play their league rugby in Division 2B this year having been relegated from 2A last season.  However, the Limerick team has recruited well over the summer months and Nenagh faced a strong side.

Old Crescent opened the scoring with a penalty and added an unconverted try to this in the first quarter to go 8-0 ahead.  Nenagh then went on the attack and worked hard to get into scoring range and win a penalty which Dan Fogarty slotted.  Fogarty then kicked another penalty to take Nenagh to within two points.  However, Old Crescent came back at them and a good kick for the corner gave them a lineout on Nenagh’s 5 metre line.  Old Crescent took the ball cleanly and set up a driving maul, resulting in a try for the home side which left the half-time score at 15-6.

Nenagh came out with renewed energy in the second half and fought hard for every inch.  Despite this, Old Crescent scored another penalty in the first few minutes to extend their lead to 18-6.  However, Nenagh kept plugging away and were rewarded when Mark Doyle showed great strength and pace to break through the defence for a try which was converted by Fogarty.

There was a high number of penalties in the second half and this led to a stop-start game which made putting phases together difficult for both teams.  Both kickers missed opportunities but Nenagh’s discipline let them down with Old Crescent being the recipients of a greater number of kickable penalties.  They added two more penalties either side of Nenagh’s second try which came after some patient play saw Nenagh win a penalty out wide on the 5 metre line.  Dan Fogarty’s quick tap and pass to Ruaidhri O’Brien saw the Nenagh winger finish well to touch down.  Unfortunately, it was not enough and the Nenagh players were visibly frustrated and disappointed when the final whistle went.

Nenagh Ormond host Sunday’s Well this Saturday, September 13th, at 2.30pm in a friendly.  The lads are also looking forward to getting back to AIL action the following weekend with an away trip to Dungannon on Saturday, September 20th, for their first taste of Division 2A.  Get all fixtures and results on our website www.nenaghormondrfc.com and find us on Facebook & Twitter for updates.

Under 14’s 22-22 Ennis

Nenagh travelled to Ennis on Saturday morning to play an early season friendly. Ennis began very strongly with their large forwards putting a lot of pressure on the Nenagh pack. This forward pressure allowed the Ennis backs to score two early tries and take a 12 nil lead. The Nenagh players then began to rally and the Nenagh pack led by Luke Connolly started to come to terms with the big Ennis forwards. With the Nenagh forwards now matching their Ennis counterparts it allowed the Nenagh half backs of James Ferris and Owen Farrell to get their back line moving. After a well worked back line move Matthew Hodgins got in for Nenagh’s first try. The Nenagh tight five of Eoghan Slevin, Patrick Whelan, Luke Connolly, Conor Malone and Lorcan Tuohy were beginning to hold their own in the scrum and from a solid Nenagh scrum the ball was moved very quickly down the Nenagh back line and left wing Conor McMahon sprinted in to get Nenagh’s second try.

With Nenagh now well back into the game Ennis once again started to attack the Nenagh line and before the interval got in for two tries which brought the score at the break to 22 – 10 in favour of Ennis. After the interval Nenagh brought on the only subs they had available on the day Danny O’Connor and Aaron Reilly. Nenagh started to win more ruck ball with the back row of Dylin Knight, Ruan O’Hanluain and Oisín McMahon covering a huge amount of ground and winning some great ball on the ground. With the Nenagh backs getting more ball first centre Jack Moran made some great breaks through the Ennis line and was unlucky not to score on at least one occasion. It was following one of these great breaks that allowed centre Matthew Hodgins to get in for his second try. The Ennis players began to look under pressure with the Nenagh players continuing to attack at every opportunity. Ennis then started to resort to a kicking game and the back three of Kevin Harding, Patrick Finn and Conor McMahon covered these kicks and ran back at Ennis. In the last few minutes of the game the Nenagh forwards won some good turnover ball on the halfway line and with some slick passing from the half backs the ball went into mid field and allowed Matthew Hodgins to score his third try of the day, which he duly converted to give Nenagh a well-deserved 22 all draw.

It was great to see all the Nenagh parents supporting their boys on the day and it looked like there was more Nenagh support at pitch side than there was for Ennis. A big thanks must go to Cathal Donovan who travelled with us to Ennis to referee the match on the day. Training continues this Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. in Lisatunny.
