Seapoint RFC 3-37 Nenagh Ormond Senior XV

Report by David Kennedy

Last Saturday was Nenagh Ormond’s first ever visit to the home of Seapoint in Kilgobbet Park, Killiney. The clubs had only ever met once before a few seasons back when Seapoint came to Nenagh and left with a win in a year that they went on to win promotion. While Seapoint's form coming into this game was mixed, they were defending an unbeaten home record and in their last home game had turned over Thomond.

Nenagh didn’t expect to get anything easy in this game and it looked as if their worst fears might be realized when after 5 minutes the Seapoint out half converted a difficult penalty to edge them ahead. This was as good as it got for Seapoint because a superb Nenagh performance, both in attack and defense, meant they wouldn’t  score again. Dan Fogarty converted a penalty into the wind to settle the nerves and then following a great move along the back line Misi Salave showed a clean pair of heels to touch down in the corner to leave Nenagh 8-3 ahead at half time, with the strengthening breeze to come in the second half.

The scoreline might suggest that Nenagh had it all their own way in that second half but that would be unfair to the home team who threw everything at them, but a combination of excellent defense and dogged determination meant that they were not going to cross the line. Dan Fogarty kicked another penalty and then Ruaidhri O’Brien does what he does best – in a 5 minute spell running in two tries, both showing the kind of pace, strength and acceleration that is his hallmark. The second in particular was outstanding, when he stood up their winger in the tightest of spaces, jinked past him and sped over from almost half way. Ruaidhri has recently got a new job in England which will make it more difficult for him to make himself available in the future and he will be sorely missed.

Having scored three tries and with 30 minutes still to play, it now seemed likely that Nenagh would record their first winning bonus point of the season. Seapoint weren’t going to concede easily however and it took another 20 minutes before the fourth try eventually came, when Hugh Moloney showed great strength to squeeze through the smallest of gaps and crash over. A final and 5th try came with the last play of the game when Mark Doyle, who played superbly all through, got the reward that his performance deserved with another great try to leave the final score 37-3.

This performance was a vast improvement on some recent disappointing games with every player showing huge commitment and the team demonstrating the ability to play rugby of the very highest level. This result leaves Nenagh in 5th place in the League and within touching distance of the teams ahead. Next game is at home to Naas on Saturday 20th December and another good result would leave Nenagh well placed going in to the Christmas break. There will be music, craic and mince pies in the bar afterwards so why not come out and kick start the Christmas with what promises to be a great day.

Team: Dan Fogarty, Ruaidhri O’Brien, Salave Misionare, Mark Doyle, Hugh Maloney, Michael Fogarty, Eoin Gardiner, Fergal Brislane, John Healy, Conor Brislane, Kevin O’Gorman, Kevin O’Flaherty, Michael Slattery, Lemeki Vaipulu, Anthony Kavanagh.  Reps: Jonathan Hayes, Kevin O’Gorman, Shane Quinlan, John Lillis, Aidan Doyle.

Under 16’s

The Under 16 B team were in action last Sunday away to Presentation in Limerick.  This was a good run out for all the lads.  There were some great tries scored with the highlight being a great solo effort from Pat Ryan crossing the line for his first try for Nenagh.  These lads are really enjoying their rugby and are improving with every game.

Mini Training

The N.O.R.F.C. Mini section moved training to the excellent 3G All-weather pitch in Ballymackey F.C. on Sunday.  The players really enjoyed the experience and our running and passing skills will certainly develop on this surface.  Thanks to Ballymackey F.C. for facilitating us.

Our last mini training session before we break for Christmas will take place next Sunday, 14th of December, in Ballymackey. All players must return their Christmas Draw tickets sold or unsold to their coaches at training on Sunday.

Table Quiz

NORFC Age-grade section held a very successful Table Quiz in the clubhouse last Friday night.  Thanks to everyone who supported the quiz, to those who donated some fantastic prizes for our raffle and to all who helped to organise and run the night.  A special word of thanks to our quizmaster, Tony Wells, whose questions were excellent as always.

Robbie Henshaw Visit!

Well done to Under 8 coach Louis Manley who won the recent competition run by Arrabawn Dairies to win a session with Connacht and Ireland Star Robbie Henshaw.  We look forward to welcoming Robbie to Nenagh Ormond in the New Year.
