Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Naas 7-10 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond travelled to Naas on Saturday last for the first of their back to back fixtures against the Kildare team.  Nenagh started well and had the majority of the possession in the opening quarter. The conditions were difficult but Jack Molamphy put Nenagh on the scoreboard with a penalty after 18 minutes. Naas looked dangerous with ball in hand though and Johne Murphy touched down for them after a long spell on the attack in Nenagh's half.  Naas outhalf Peter Osbourne kicked the conversion which put them 7-3 ahead.

Nenagh's determination was commendable and they worked hard to make their way back into the lead.  A scrum 15 metres out saw LemekiVaipulu pick off the back and make good ground.  The support was there giving scrumhalf Mike Fogarty quick ball and he gave a lovely long pass out to centre Derek Corcoran who went over just minutes before half time.  Molamphy added the extras to put Nenagh 3 points in front.

The second half was a real tug of war with both teams making inroads only to come away with no points.  Nenagh, now playing against the wind, had to defend for long periods but they held firm and even pushed the Naas attack back at times.  In the final ten minutes Naas threw everything at Nenagh and there were some nervy moments, including a Naas penalty attempt from halfway which veered just left of the posts.

In the end, the aggressive Nenagh defence kept Naas well away from the try line and the Nenagh lads can be very proud of a valuable win on the road.  The Nenagh pack, well marshalled by Fogarty at 9, were immense throughout and special mention must go to Jack Molamphy who showed super skills and a cool head throughout.

Next Saturday sees the return fixture when Nenagh welcome Naas to New Ormond Park for a 2.30pm kick off.

Team: Jack Molamphy, John Long, Derek Corcoran, William O’Connor, Michael Walsh, KolioHifo, Mike Fogarty, Fergal Brislane, Peter O’Connor, Conor Brislane, Kevin O’Gorman, Kevin O’Flaherty, Kevin Seymour, Anthony Kavanagh, LemekiVaipulu.  Reps: John Healy, Andrew Mackey, Aidan Doyle, Peter O’Leary, Gerard O’Gorman.

Under 14 League Semi-Final

Nenagh Ormond Under 14s play Fethard at home this Sunday in a refix of the East Munster Under 14 League Semi-Final which was postponed last Sunday due to weather conditions.  The Under 14 players and coaches have put in huge work to get this far in the League and they will be hoping that it will pay off on Sunday with a win that will put them through to the final.

All support would be greatly appreciated.  Please see our Facebook page for any updates to fixtures.

Old Crescent 26-21 Under 13s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s made the journey to Limerick on Sunday morning to play a league game. The pitch was in perfect condition after the storm and it was a beautiful morning for rugby.

Unfortunately Nenagh were very slow to start and after some poor handling and equally poor tackling Crescent were gifted three tries, two of which were converted.  This was after fifteen minutes and it looked like a serious defeat was on the cards but in fairness the lads got stuck in and both Adam Clear and PadraicHassett scored just before half time after great team work.  James Finn converted both.

Early in the second half Padraic got his second with James adding the conversion. It was now we should have pushed on and finished off the game but the mistakes crept back into our game and we fell off too many tackles, again culminating in letting them in for a soft converted try.

We tried hard in the last few minutes to find a score but it was not to be. This was a very frustrating performance as these lads are training well but not bringing the required aggression onto the pitch on a Sunday. With a little bit of aggression and a willingness to carry what happens on the training pitch into a match situation this team can get back to winning ways soon.

Team: Sonny Dower, Adam Clear, Adam Steed, Peter Collins, PadraicHassett, James Finn, Niall O’Sullivan, Cian White, Sean Fitzgerald, Patrick Fogarty, Tom Kennedy, Darragh Tucker, John Brislane(captain), Evan Rainsford, EoghanTighe.  Reps: DJ McGrath, Eoin Quinn, Liam Cooney, Sean Williams, Patrick Quigley.

Under 11s

Training resumed last Sunday morning in Lisatunny at 10am (and going forward will remain at this time). It was a case of the calm after the storm as Sunday was a lovely airy morning which was ideal for rugby.  The ground was soft and ideal for tackling.  Our numbers were a little short but nonetheless coach Fergal, no doubt buoyed by a good victory in Naas the previous day, ensured we had a lively, intense and useful training session and match afterwards.

Fred Sheppard was definitely tackler of the day and William Fogarty showed strength and determination to score a few great tries.  Best wishes to coach Andy for a speedy recovery.  Next Sunday we will probably have an away match, details to follow by text.  New players and returning players always welcome.
