Nenagh Ormond RFC - Club Notes 07-01-2014

Senior XV

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV were scheduled to play Bruff last Friday night in a friendly but unfortunately weather conditions in the hour before the match left the pitch in a bad state and, despite having warmed up and attempted to play a short game on part of the pitch, the match was eventually called off.

The lads return to AIL action this Saturday, January 11th, when they travel to Sligo for a 2.30pm kick off.  They will be hoping to continue their unbeaten run in the league and to stay at the top of Division 2B.

Under 14s League Semi-Final

The Nenagh Under 14s were back in League action last Sunday after a long break when they travelled to Kilfeacle for the League Semi-Final.  The match was in some doubt for much of the morning but eventually got the green light to go ahead.  The Nenagh forwards hit the ground running and began to pile on the pressure at the very start.  They threatened to get in for an early try after some great surges from Steven Harding and Alex Hayes but somehow the home side, playing on their smaller training pitch, managed to just about hold out and then themselves get a break up the field which caught the Nenagh defence unaware and resulted in a penalty under the posts which was put over to give Kilfeacle a narrow 3-0 half-time lead.

Nenagh stepped up in the second half with some fresh legs in the team and began to dominate possession and territory with Evan Murphy and Darragh Flannery carrying the ball very strongly through the centre.  This lead to sustained pressure and eventually a Nenagh penalty which Evan Murphy coolly slotted to tie the match at 3 all.

Despite some intense late Nenagh pressure and a couple of half chances from Kilfeacle, the game ended as a low scoring but very entertaining and at times thrilling 3 all draw.  There was a very high skill level on display on both sides despite the flood-like condition of the pitch.  Unfortunately this effort may not prove enough for the Nenagh lads to reach another final as the first score rule may apply to send the home side through.  The whole Nenagh panel can be proud of their efforts in this league and now look forward to the second half of the season.
