Nenagh Ormond 13-13 U.C.C.

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV took on UCC last Saturday in their 4th AIL game of the season.  Although the Cork side were lying six places below Nenagh, UCC have a lot of experience of playing at a high level and Nenagh were expecting a tough game.

Nenagh started brightly and dominated possession and territory for the first half an hour of the match.  However, mistakes and the difficult conditions combined to deny them a score.  Their best chance came when UCC gained possession in their own half and kicked to Nenagh winger Ruaidhri O’Brien.  O’Brien passed to Dan Fogarty who in turn passed to opposite winger Misi Salave who used his footwork and pace to make good ground.  As he was brought down he popped to centre Mark Doyle who broke down the touchline, only to be held up a few metres short.  The Nenagh forwards were in the action quickly and they laid siege to the try line, leading to UCC conceding a penalty.  Nenagh elected to tap and go quickly but unfortunately the opportunity to score was left behind when they knocked on in the middle of the pitch.

In contrast UCC, who were starved of possession and pinned in their own half for so long, took their chances when they came.  The first was a penalty late in the first half followed by another three points just after half time.  Dan Fogarty narrowed the gap in the third quarter when UCC were penalised for not rolling away but the Cork side pulled away again quickly.  From the kick off, Nenagh gathered and set up for a box kick.  The UCC pillars came up fast, blocked down the kick and the ball bounced up for them to gather it.  They recycled quickly and, with the Nenagh defence scrambling, took advantage of an overlap to score in the corner.

Credit to Nenagh, they upped their game from the restart and began to contest at the breakdown more aggressively, eventually winning a kickable penalty to close the gap to seven points.  Nenagh kept up the intensity and won several more penalties, eventually resulting in a yellow card for UCC and an attacking lineout on their five metre line.  Nenagh set up a solid maul from a quick, clean lineout and drove over the line for Mike Slattery to touch the ball down, leaving the final score at 13-all.

Next up for Nenagh Ormond are Cashel away next Saturday at 2.30pm.

Ballincollig 17-7 Nenagh Ladies

Nenagh Ormond Ladies travelled to Cork on Sunday last where they played Ballincollig in their fourth AIL game of the season.  The newer members of the team, all of whom have shown great potential, had gained some valuable experience in the previous games, two out of three of which the Ladies had won.

The game started with both teams looking fairly evenly matched and both defences seemed watertight.  Ballincollig did win a penalty which, though straight, was some distance out and came off the left upright.  When Nenagh found themselves in possession in their own 22, they opted to run the ball and, although they initially made some ground, Ballincollig eventually won a turnover just outside the 22.  They came at Nenagh strongly and made their way to the 5 metre line.  After picking from a strong scrum and almost getting over the try line, they won a more kickable penalty which their outhalf slotted easily.

Nenagh were determined at the restart and worked very hard over the next ten minutes.  When they were awarded a penalty inside Ballincollig’s ten metre line, scrum half June Whelan thought fast and took it quickly, catching the opposition defence off guard and making good yards.  Outhalf Sandra Williams stayed with her and picked and went after the tackle.  She broke straight through the defence and touched the ball down between the posts.  Ciara McCullough kicked the conversion to leave the score at 3-7.

Ballincollig came straight back at Nenagh and, although they held well for some time, in the end it was simply missed tackles which allowed the Ballincollig winger to make a break down the touch line and win a penalty.  Ballincollig tapped it quickly and scored just before half time to go ahead 8-7.

The second half saw Ballincollig with more possession and, although Nenagh did put some good phases together, they opted to play from deep on a few occasions when kicking to touch might have eased the pressure.  Ballincollig were organised and took their chances, choosing to kick any penalties they got.  Their outhalf landed three out of four, the missed kick being a long-range effort, and their last penalty in the final minute of the match denied Nenagh a losing bonus point.

The Nenagh girls were very disappointed after the game and they will be anxious to put in a good performance in their next AIL game against St. Senan’s at home on Sunday at 1pm.

Kilfeacle 12-24 Under 16’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 16’s got their league campaign back to winning ways with a hard fought 24-12 victory away to a Kilfeacle/Galbally combination in Kilfeacle.  Kilfeacle and Galbally have amalgamated at Under 16 and Under 18 rugby for this season.

Nenagh began well and with Ruari Maher returning at outhalf and they had Kilfeacle/Galbally under pressure from the start with some fine free flowing rugby.  After 10 minutes outhalf Maher broke through the Kilfeacle/Galbally defence after several phases of play to score in the corner.  Within five minutes, Nenagh increased their advantage when Tommy Wells took the ball from the base of a ruck close out and scored under the posts, with Ruari Maher converting to put Nenagh 12 points to nil in front.

Kilfeacle/Galbaly gradually got back into the game and scored a fine try in the corner after a good backline move.  However, Nenagh came back at them and just before half time Fiachra Carey was at the end of a good passing move to put Nenagh 17-5 up at the break.

Kilfeacle/Galbally, playing with the wind in the second half, came more and more into the game as the half progressed.  The Nenagh defence held firm until after a succession of penalties close in, Kilfeacle/Galbally were finally rewarded for their efforts with a forwards try near the posts, which was converted to leave only five points between the sides.  Kilfeacle/Galbally continued to press.  However the Nenagh defence were well marshalled and held the Kilfeacle/Galbally lads out.

With ten minutes remaining a great break by full back Eddie O’Dwyer brought a lineout on the Kilfeacle/Galbally 22.  From the line-out Tommy Wells scored a great try, taking the ball from the throw and going on a mazy run beating all before him and running through the Kilfeacle/Galbaly defence to touch down under the posts.  Conor O’Brien converted to leave Nenagh 24-12 in front.

Having the buffer of a 12 point lead allowed the Nenagh management bring on all players who travelled, and the newcomers were just as disciplined in defence as the starting line-up, and withstood a lot of Kilfeacle/Galbally pressure to hold out for a great victory.  Winning away in Kilfeacle is never easy and credit is due to the spirited opposition provided by Kilfeacle/Galbally.

The squad who travelled were, Fiacara Carey, Nathan Deely O’Meara, Ben Duff, Jack Dunne, Luke fahy, Stephen Harding, Michael Kennedy, Sam Kroupa, Ruari Maher, Shane Mitchell-Steed, Orrin Moore, Colum Moylan, Evan Murphy, Conor O’Brien, Eddie O’Dwyer, Cianan O’hAnlauin, Jake O’Kelly, Seamus O’Meara, Martin Rainsford, Cathal Ryan, Peter Ryan, Tommy Wells, Aaron White

Under 14’s 41-0 Thurles

On Saturday evening Nenagh made the journey to Thurles. From the outset the Nenagh starting pack of Danny O’Connor, Eoghan Slevin, Luke Connolly, Oisín Webb, Ruan O’Hanluain, Dylan Murphy, Kian O’Kelly and Jack O’Keeffe looked really up for it and gave Thurles no chance to settle into the match. After a good deal of Nenagh pressure and some hard rucking by the Nenagh forwards they then released their starting back line of James Ferris, Owen Farrell, Peter Rainsford, Jack Moran, Roan Harte-Murphy, Patrick Finn and Oisín Larkin. The Nenagh backs ran some lovely passing movements however the Thurles backs continued to tackle well and kept all the early Nenagh attacks out. With the Nenagh forwards continuing to outplay the Thurles pack particularly in the rucks Nenagh were rewarded with good early tries by Kian O’Kelly and Peter Rainsford. Coming up on half time the Nenagh forwards continued to put pressure on the Thurles line which allowed scrum half James Ferris to get in for a well-deserved try. At the interval Nenagh led by 25 - 0.

At the beginning of the second half Thurles tried to get back into the game but the Nenagh players did not let them and the Nenagh forwards in particular continued to hit every ruck as if their lives depended on it. With Nenagh continuing to dominate the forward exchanges this allowed Kian O’Kelly to get in for another try and also allowed Jack O’Keeffe to get on the score sheet. With the Nenagh forwards well on top of their opposition the Nenagh back line began to run some lovely passing movements which culminated in centre Jack Moran getting in for two great tries. On the evening Nenagh scored seven tries, three of which were converted by full back Oisín Larkin with the final score being 41 – 0 to Nenagh.

A big thanks to Nenagh senior players Anthony Gray and Dan Fogarty for taking the time to come out to our training session last week. The drills that they did with the players were put to good use in their match against Thurles.
