Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Banbridge 27-13 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV made the long trip to Banbridge on Saturday morning last for their second AIL match of the season.  Nenagh were hoping to continue the form which saw them beat Queens University the week before but, having been beaten well by Banbridge last season, they knew this would be a more difficult task.

Nenagh started a bit sluggish and Banbridge had the majority of the possession in the opening ten minutes but Nenagh managed them well, conceding just three points in this period.  Nenagh gradually came more into the game and had a good deal of possession after this but a number of penalties and a couple of errors meant that they handed possession back to Banbridge each time.  However, after a sustained period of pressure in Banbridge’s 22, one of these penalties failed to find touch with Nenagh’s Derek Corcoran fielding it and running it back.  He made good ground and the support was there to secure possession.  A couple of quick recycles allowed Nenagh to get further infield and a great line from KolioHifo saw him take the ball at pace and break the first tackle before a super offload put Corcoran in under the posts.  Hifo converted to leave the score at 3-7.

The sides exchanged penalties before the last ten minutes of the half and looked to be fairly evenly matched but then Nenagh seemed to lose concentration and a missed tackle allowed Banbridge to break down the left wing.  Despite an excellent tackle by Derek Corcoran to halt the break, Banbridge had men in support and ran in just to the left of the posts, making for a reasonably easy conversion which left Banbridge ahead by 13 points to 10 at half time.

Nenagh started the second half with renewed determination and were rewarded with a penalty ten minutes in.  Hifo slotted this to even up the scores.  However, the remainder of the game saw Nenagh put some great phases together only to be undone by small errors and, credit to Banbridge, they were quick to reorganise and capitalise on these errors.  Banbridge’s two second half tries both came from Nenagh mistakes allowing Banbridge to gain possession and make breaks from halfway.

Nenagh will be sorely disappointed with the manner of this loss but will have to regroup quickly as they take on U.C.C. this Saturday at home.  Last year’s meeting between the two teams resulted in a draw so the lads will be hoping to go a step further and record a second win in this year’s League.

Cashel 7-29 Under 14s

Nenagh Ormond Under 14’s started their League campaign on Sunday away to Cashel.  The benefits of having played four matches in the previous four weeks showed and Cashel were outclassed from start to finish.

Dylan Murphy set the tone from the first minute by receiving the kick off and carrying strongly into the Cashel half.  The ball was recycled several times and Liam King finished in the corner. Nenagh continually broke the gain line through strong running from the forwards and clever running lines from the backs. Dominance at the breakdown ensured plenty of possession and Liam King and David O’Sullivan added further tries to put Nenagh 17-0 up after fifteen minutes.

Then Nenagh tried to run the ball out of their own 22 but Cashel capitalised on a loose pass to score under the posts and reduce the gap. Nenagh regained possession from the restart and, following great work from James Meagher and Jack White, Dylan Murphy powered over.  Hugh Guest converted to leave the half time score at 24-7.

In the second half some great interplay between Liam King, Hugh Guest and Luke Gleeson almost resulted in a try but Nenagh were just bundled into touch. From the resultant throw in Dylan Murphy stole the ball and crashed over in the corner for the final score of the match to leave Nenagh the winners by 29 points to 7.  Next up for our Under 14s are Clanwilliam away next Sunday.

Under 13s

The Under 13s played Ballina/Killaloe in Tyone on Sunday morning in a friendly. This was an opportunity to give the whole panel some game time as substitutions are limited in the league. We came up against a much improved Ballina/Killaloe team who showed us a thing or two as they raced to a 24-0 half time lead. Some very weak and in some cases non tackling made it easy for the visitors.

Nenagh picked it up in the second half and put some nice phases together to score three tries and were unfortunate to knock on in the process of scoring a fourth.  Ballina got two tries in the second half to leave the final score 36-19 in favour of the visitors.  Try scorers for Nenagh were Paul Seymour, James Finn and Tom Kennedy.  James Finn also kicked two conversions.

Next week we are back in league action away to St. Senan's. Time to be advised.
