Nenagh Ormond Seconds 12-19 Old Crescent

Nenagh Ormond Seconds were at home to Old Crescent on Sunday last in the Munster Senior Seconds League.  It was a tough game against a strong Crescent side whose defence was difficult to break down throughout.  Nenagh started well but Crescent took their opportunities when they came, scoring two penalties in the first quarter to go ahead by six points.  However, Nenagh came straight back into the game when Kevin O’Gorman regained possession from the kick off and made a great run into the Crescent 22.  This resulted in a period of sustained pressure in Old Crescent territory and eventually Thomas McNamara picked and went over the line to score.  Peter O’Leary slotted the conversion to put Nenagh ahead 7-6.

With possession from the kick off, Nenagh continued to work hard but Old Crescent won possession just inside the Nenagh half and flashed the ball wide.  A skip pass out to the winger saw them break down the right hand side as far as the 5 metre line and, although the Nenagh defence worked back quickly, Crescent kept it tight and drove over the line to go ahead by 11 points to 7.

The lead changed twice again in the first half.  First, Nenagh were awarded a penalty which they kicked to touch.  From the lineout, they set up a solid maul and drove over the line for Thomas McNamara to score his second try which gave Nenagh a 12-11 lead.  Then, just before half-time, Old Crescent won a kickable penalty to leave them ahead at the break by 14 points to 12.

The score remained at 12-14 for much of the second half, with neither team able to break the other’s defence.  Nenagh put some good rugby together but a few small errors meant that they did not convert the pressure into points.  Nenagh seemed to tire a little as the half wore on and Old Crescent took advantage of this in the final quarter when they got a foothold in the Nenagh 22.  They kept possession and recycled well, gradually pulling in the Nenagh defence and creating an overlap which allowed them to score in the corner and leave the final score at Nenagh Ormond 12-19 Old Crescent.

Next up for our Seconds are Thomond away this Sunday at 2.30pm.

Nenagh Under 14’s win East Munster League Final
Nenagh Ormond 10-7 Waterpark

Nenagh travelled to Tipperary Town on Sunday morning to take on Waterpark in the East Munster League Final. Nenagh got off to a strong start with the Nenagh starting pack of Danny O’Connor, Eoghan Slevin, Luke Connolly, Oisín Webb, Ruan O’Hanluain, Dylan Murphy, Jack O’Keeffe and Kian O’Kelly putting a huge amount of pressure on the Waterpark pack. Nenagh spent the first ten minutes of the game in the Waterpark twenty two and from a five metre scrum Nenagh number eight and captain Jack O’Keeffe ran at the Waterpark line and passed the ball to right wing Matthew Hodgins who touched down for what looked like Nenagh’s opening try however the touch judge deemed that there was a foot in touch and the try was disallowed. With the Nenagh forwards continuing to ruck and maul so well the Nenagh back line of James Ferris, Owen Farrell, Jack Moran, Roan Harte-Murphy, Matthew Hodgins, Peter Rainsford and Oisín Larkin were able to put some quality running movements together and it was following one of these that left wing Peter Rainsford got in for Nenagh’s opening try. The try was converted by Jack Moran to give Nenagh a well-deserved 7 – 0 lead. From the restart the Nenagh forwards once again took the ball back in to the Waterpark half and with some great drives from Luke Connolly, Oisín Webb and Kian O’Kelly the Waterpark forwards seemed to have no answer to a rampant Nenagh pack. This dominance brought Nenagh a penalty on the Waterpark twenty two which Jack Moran duly converted. As the first half drew to an end it was Nenagh who were winning the majority of possession and with some great runs from the Nenagh backs who were only just held up by good tackling from Waterpark. Nenagh held a well-deserved 10 – 0 lead at half time.

From the restart Nenagh once again continued to attack the Waterpark line and it looked like it would only be a matter of time before one of the great charges from the Nenagh forwards would allow them to get over the line. However Waterpark continued to tackle as if their lives depended on it and kept Nenagh out and then began to launch a few counter attacks. It was now time for Nenagh to show their defensive abilities and all of the Nenagh back line put in some great tackles during this period of the game with full back Oisín Larkin making a try saving tackle on the Waterpark full back ten minutes into the second half. Midway through the second half the play was much more evenly balanced with Waterpark doing a lot more attacking than they did in the first half. The Nenagh half backs of James Ferris and Owen Farrell were finding it harder to get the ball to their back line and the Nenagh centres of Jack Moran and Roan Harte-Murphy had to put in some fine tackles to keep the Waterpark backs at bay. With five minutes to go Nenagh were once again on the attack in the Waterpark half but the ball broke loose and the Waterpark full back broke free and ran down the touch line and was tackled into touch by a number of Nenagh players however the referee felt the tackles to be illegal and awarded Waterpark a penalty try. So with Nenagh being in control for the majority of the match at 10 – 0 it was now finely balanced at 10 -7 with three minutes to go. From the restart the Nenagh forwards managed to regain possession and in true ‘Munster’ like fashion picked and drove from each ruck and kept the play in the Waterpark half until the final whistle.

We would like to thank all parents and family members and the huge number of Nenagh Ormond members and supporters who travelled to Tipperary Town to cheer our players on to a memorable victory. The Nenagh support appeared to be far greater than the numbers who travelled for Waterpark. We would also like to thank everybody who helped out in the club house in Lisatunny when the team returned for their victory celebrations.
