Nenagh Neptune Swimming Club Notes 09/12/2013

Irish Open Short Course Championships 2013 – Lisburn, Co. Down

The championships were held this year in Lisburn, Co. Down from the 29th Nov – 1st Dec. Swimmers from 58 clubs from all 32 counties competed and Nenagh Neptune Swimming Club were proud to be represented at the event by two of our swimmers, Shane Cody and Isabelle Dunne.
Shane competed in 3 events during the meet, getting personal bests in two of them, in one knocking a massive 3.77 seconds off his 100m IM time which qualified him for the finals. Meanwhile, Isabelle competed in 4 events where she swam extremely well achieving two personal best times in the 50m and 100m freestyle.
As always many thanks to the most dedicated supporters (otherwise known as parents) who travelled up with the swimmers and flew the Nenagh Neptune banner with great pride for all to see during the event.

LSC Novice Gala - UL Arena National 50m Pool, Limerick
Report by Mark Dempsey, Nenagh Neptune Head Coach

The future stars of Nenagh Neptune Swimming Club were on display on Saturday 7th December in the UL Arena as the first novice gala that the club has participated in for a number of years took place. A late start of 12 noon made it a bit easier for the 20 plus swimmers who attended. The competition started with the Under 8’s 25m back crawl, and then the nerves really started to show. The racing was as fierce as any world championship I have ever seen with delight, joy, sadness and tears, a testament to the hard work these very young athletes put in.

A special thanks to Sarah McCutcheon who came in to support her brother and help out with the team. NNSC swimmers worked very hard and some achieved B grade times and even the odd A grade time.

As a swimming coach, I’ve seen most of what happens but to see how well behaved our younger swimmers are makes me proud. The care and help these children gave to each other was amazing. The main idea of these races was to show new swimmers that it’s all still a bit of fun and to enjoy it – I know I did!

To the parents who brought their children to the gala, thank you and hope to see you at many more. Also to ex NNSC swimmer Jessie Langridge, a true member. Thanks for calling in on the day, your presence was appreciated.

Medal Count on the day; 10 Gold, 2 Silver, 7 Bronze

LSC Long Distance Gala – UL Arena National 50m Pool, Limerick

The second event of the weekend at this venue, Sunday 8th December saw 15 swimmers from NNSC swimming long distance for the first time in competition. With swimming distances in these events between 400m and 1500m, it was a test of stamina, not the usual bursts of speed that the swimmers are used to, that was the order of the day. All the swimmers did very well and both coaches and swimmers were very happy with the debut performances in these events.

Other Business – As all involved in the club are no doubt aware at this stage, the pool in Nenagh will close for re-development work on the 20th Dec 2013, planned to re-open at the end of March 2014. With this in mind a new programme of training has been agreed with the coaches and a letter has been sent to all parents outlining this new programme. In conjunction with this it is proposed to have a meeting with Parents and Swimmers on Monday 16th of December at 7.30p.m. in the Abbey Court Hotel, to provide the Coaches an opportunity to set out the proposed training programme and to deal with any queries that Parents/Swimmers may have. It is highly recommended that at least one parent of each swimmer attend on the night.
