Improved Broadband for Tipperary Secondary Schools

Secondary schools in Tipperary will benefit from improved broadband by the the beginning of the 2014/2015 school year according to Government ministers.

The third and final phase of the Government’s plan to put 100Mbps broadband into every secondary school in Ireland is ready to begin said Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte on Monday.

The Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) is funding all of the capital costs of this project, estimated to be approximately €11m, as well as contributing some €10m in current costs for the years 2012 to 2015. The Department of Education & Skills (DES) will fund the remaining current costs (estimated to be some €20m up to 2015). DES will also fund the on-going costs on an annual basis into the future.

Tipperary TD Noel Coonan said: “This is an important step forward for local Tipperary schools and for the efficient education of our youth. We in Government are progressing with the rollout of high speed broadband and recognise the importance of a proficient internet service for the educational sector.”
