Ireland’s premier producer of theatre for children, Barnstorm Theatre Company, brings its acclaimed ‘Monday’s Child’ to Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday afternoon, February 7th. Written by award-winning writer Brendan Murray (Writers’ Guild of Great Britain -Best Children’s Play 2012) this play was selected as one of 2014’s Theatre Top Ten by the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
Created especially for children aged four and older, ‘Monday’s Child’ tells the simple poetic story of the unique bond between a little girl and an old woman suffering memory loss. Together in a dream-like garden, they sing and dance and dress up as they joyously explore a treasure trove of memory boxes.
For the young girl in the play, the older woman’s memory loss becomes a word game, a puzzle to be solved. If the girl ever feels frustrated, she is never sharp or critical with her companion. At opposite ends of the life cycle, the girl is building her vocabulary while the older woman appears to be losing hers. Delightfully, the use of made-up words makes sense to them both; a clock is a “time-ticker”, binoculars are “faraways” and when determining what day it is, the girl confidently informs the older woman that “It’s today”. Children were on the edge of their seats with excitement and anticipation as box after box of colourful surprises was revealed, while the adults find the poignancy of the older woman’s struggle with memory loss deeply resonant.
