The inaugural Shannon Suir Cycle fundraiser for the North Tipperary Hospice movement has received a timely boost ahead of Saturday’s event with the Barack Obama Plaza coming on board as a lead sponsor of the cycle.

Meanwhile the organisers of the event have this week issued a final rallying call to potential participants to sign up for the event, either for the full 120k cycle or indeed one of the smaller legs(shortest leg is a 10k  family cycle from Nenagh to Dromineer).

The newly established service station has kindly donated the food and financial sponsorship towards the costs of running the event. Kay O Donoghue of the North Tipperary Hospice expressed the Hospice’s delight that the Barack Obama Plaza has come on board, adding that its support will go a long way towards the costs of running this event.

“Running an event like this involves costs, of course, and one such cost is the lunch we need to provide for cyclists, a lunch break that will take place sometime around 1 p.m. on the banks of the Suir at The Source, Thurles.  We approached the Barack Obama Plaza about potentially sponsoring this and they have given us a yes and we are really delighted.

“This is the first year of what we hope to be an annual event and we aim to get off to a good start and this sponsorship definitely helps us.   We are expecting a big day on Saturday with a lot of people committing to doing the cycle and, more importantly, raising sponsorship for their efforts.   They are either looking at doing the full 129km or as part of a relay team so we are really excited about the day and this support from the Barack Obama Plaza is certainly timely.”

Said Pat McDonagh, Managing Director of the Barack Obama Plaza, “We are delighted to be on board as main sponsor of the Shannon to Suir Cycle, which is in aid of such a worthy cause. We look forward to welcoming all the cyclists at the Barack Obama Plaza when they stop to recharge ahead of the next stage of the journey. We would like to wish each cyclist and all involved the very best of luck as they take to the roads this weekend.”

Other businesses in North Tipperary are also supporting the event, including Tipp Water, which has generously sponsored water for the cyclists, Country Choice, which sponsoring nutritious snacks for the cyclists, Ryans Refuse Collection Thurles and Cian Heffernan Design who sponsored the website. The hospice would like to thank all of the businesses who are supporting this event either through sponsorship, or those who are nominating cyclists from their organisation.

Last Saturday a group of cyclists took off from Nenagh and Roscrea and cycled to Croke Park for the all Ireland hurling final. Among these were Tipperary hurling legends Michael Cleary and Dinny Ryan, who wore their original all Ireland hurling Jerseys for the journey. The event was to raise awareness about the upcoming Shannon Suir Cycle.

Also this week, the cycle has got a strong endorsement from Munster rugby star Donnacha Ryan who is an ambassador for the North Tipperary Hospice Movement. Donnacha would like to wish everyone participating the best of luck in this event.

The event is for all level of cyclists, given the option that there is to do the full event or just one leg of it.  Included also is a family fun cycle from 3pm at Banba Square, Nenagh to Dromineer – the final leg of the overall loop - on Saturday.

Participants are welcome to take on any one of the five individual legs – Dromineer to Roscrea (40km); Roscrea to Templemore (20k); Templemore to Thurles (15km); Thurles to Nenagh (37km); Nenagh to Dromineer Family Cycle (10km) – of overall 120km route, while there is also the Relay option, which will see teams of five persons (or less) taking on individual legs to cover the entire 120km route.

The registration fee, which will go towards covering costs of the event, is €25 per participant, with €10 per person for the Family Cycle or €20 per family for any more than two people.

However, to support the fundraising for North Tipperary Hospice, cyclists are being asked to raise sponsorship for the event, with sponsorship cards which will be sent by post to participants once they register at www.shannonsuircycle.ie.
