Additional Funding announced for Tipperary Roads

It was announced earlier in the week that there will be additional funding to improve several Tipperary roads by the Transport Minister Leo Varadkar. This good news follows a meeting last week between Minister Varadkar, Deputy Coonan, Minister of State Tom Hayes, Mayor of North Tipperary County Council Ger Darcy and Chairman of South Tipperary County Council Jimmy O'Brien to discuss various issues relating to Tipperary roads.

This will see an additional €628,000 for restoration/maintenance for regional and local roads in the county. The NRA will also be allocated €1.1 to widen the N24 on the western approach to Carrick-On-Suir with a further allocation for pavement rehabilitation on the N65 on the Tipperary side of the Portumna Bridge.

Under the Community Involvement Scheme, areas to benefit from the increased funding include Ballykelly in Knock, Kilboy in Dolla and Cloone in Templemore. CIS was devised to enable local authorities to improve stretches of road with the help of the local community, in money or in kind much sooner than otherwise would be the case. A pilot scheme was trialled in 2013 during which 299 schemes were completed.
