NENAGH TOWN PARK TO THE FORE IN PRESTIGIOUS LANDSCAPE AWARDS

At the bi-annual Irish Landscape Institute Design Awards held on 15th October 2015 Nenagh Town Park achieved recognition for the quality of the landscape design under two categories – Design-Public Realm and People’s Choice Award.  These awards give recognition to exemplary landscape projects across a range of ten categories throughout the island of Ireland.
Nenagh Town Park, designed by Stephen Diamond Associates, was nominated in these two categories.  The decision on the Design-Public Realm award was made by vote of the Judges who were:
• Michael Corr – architect, urbanist and educator
• Stefan Bernard – landscape architect, author, educator
• Neil Murphy – architect, built environment advisor
• Chris Rankin – landscape architect, educator
• Grainne Shaffrey – architect, urban designer

In this category Nenagh achieved third place and was commended by the judges.

The People’s Choice Award was decided by public vote.  Nenagh was joint second in this category with the Mardyke Gardens in Cork City.  First place in this category went to Woodenbridge World War I Memorial, Co. Wicklow.  Second placing in this category was a major achievement when one notes the quality of the other nominees which included the People’s Park, Dun Laoghaire;  Lough Boora Visitor Centre;  Inchydoney Island, Cork;  Botany Square, TCD and the Wild Atlantic Way.

Nenagh Town Park was opened to the public in October 2014 and has proven a very popular attraction for young and old, for visitors and locals.  Its proximity to the re-furbished Leisure Centre is an added attraction.  Those who have not visited it in recent times are encouraged to do so and to view how the landscape has developed and how the copious planting compliments the natural setting on the banks of the Nenagh River.  It is easy to see why it was so successful in these awards.  Earlier in the year the wildflower meadow was in bloom.  In these autumn months we see the first of the apple trees bearing fruit and an explosion of colour from the wide variety of plants and shrubs.  Recently a ‘Peace Tree’ has been planted and in the near future a further tree will be planted in respect of the ‘Relay for Life’.   The park changes with the seasons.  Also this year, we had the first couple who used the park as a backdrop for their wedding photos.

At the October meeting of Nenagh Municipal District the members welcomed the news of the awards and agreed that the Town Park is a wonderful asset in the Town, commending all those involved in its development.
