Nenagh Silent Film Festival Weekend

To open the Festival on Valentines afternoon at 3.30pm we are having a parade of Vintage Vehicles and Silent Film Characters from the Railway station, proceeding to the Arts centre.  Our friends from the Cloughjordan Circus Group & the Nenagh Players will be joining us and we encourage as much of the public as possible to get involved. Please dress up in your finest Silent Era attire or as one of  your favourite Silent Film Characters. Do you have a Vintage Car you’d like to show off on the day?? –Well Come Along!!!

Valentines Night  … with a difference…We are screening a 1922 Silent Classic Horror Movie Nosferatu in the Arts Centre. Romance is not for everyone so get your teeth into our tale of vampires, coffin ships and werewolves. Before the show, join us in “Rocky’s Bar” where Jim is laying on a Wine & Cheese reception. Drink, Snacks and a Movie for a budget busting €12 per person. Now that’s what I call love….For those not scared of the dark, it’s back to Rocky’s after the show for a Valentines Pint or two.

Rex Ingram was a famous Silent Movie Director who lived in Nenagh for a number of years. On Friday 15th February at 2pm in the Arts Centre, Professor Ruth Barton an authority on Rex will introduce The Magician a silent movie directed by Rex Ingram. This screening will be accompanied by live music in the auditorium. At 8pm, Bryan Murray (Bob Charles from Fair City) joins us in the Arts Centre to discuss what Silent Movies mean to him, as we screen our “Pair of Shorts” the premier screening of two NEW Silent Movies. Bryan will be joining us at our Masked Ball later that evening and has left us guessing as to what other Fair City stars may also join us!!

Our Valentines Weekend Masked Ball is the big event of the Festival. Doors open at the Abbey Court hotel at 9.45pm and the dress code for the evening is “Black & White” however it is not formal ballroom wear unless you want to, just appropriate to the evening. There will be a prize for the best mask on the night and masks will be available in stores in Nenagh town and also on the night in the hotel. Why not create your own mask masterpiece?  The fabulous EBONY will be providing the entertainment, after you get up the red-carpet and through the paparazzi of this Hollywood event. Vintage Buffet served on the night with Tickets at only €20 each or €30 euro for a pair/couple.  Your Masked Ball ticket if bought in advance will get you in to the earlier showing of a “Pair of Shorts “ for free.

Saturday 16th – We don’t expect to see you too early after the Masked Ball !!!  At 2pm we will be unveiling a plaque at 1 Wesley Place (opp Scouts Hall) in Nenagh dedicated to Rex Ingram who resided at that address for a number of years.

3pm and it’s “The Battle of the Clowns”  Three Comedy Classics from the Silent Era, one after another – Wouldn’t you love to remember the innocent laughing you done at Charlie Chaplin or Laurel & Hardy as a kid?? Maybe you could let your kids experience them for themselves? – All for only €5

Saturday evening and it’s The Furey Brothers in the Arts centre at 8pm – Nothing needs to be said about these guys, they are part of the heritage that makes Irish Music great – don’t miss it !

Sunday 17th is Children’s Day – A screening of the children’s silent movie Sherlock Junior starring Buster Keating, in the Arts Centre at 4pm with Face Painters, Balloons and more…  A great opportunity for children to enjoy the magic of Silent Movies!

Sunday evening and “It’s a Wrap”, a few pints a bit of music and lots of tall tales no doubt “ I knew Laurel & Hardy’s driver…….Charlie Chaplin was my Uncles first cousin………” all at the Abbey Court from 7pm.

This Valentines Weekend…LOVE…The Nenagh Silent Film Festival.
