Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 30/03/2015

UBL Division 2A
NUIM Barnhall 11-24 Nenagh Ormond

Nenagh Ormond travelled to NUIM Barnhall on Saturday for their last away fixture of the current season.  With only one game after this Nenagh needed a win to keep them in the top ten of this very competitive Division.  Nenagh started well and in truth Barnhall had very little ball in the first half.  Dan Fogarty opened the score just a few minutes in with a tough penalty kick which he confidently slotted despite the strong wind.  Nenagh kept the pressure on and Fogarty kicked another three points in the first quarter to keep them ticking over.

Barnhall defended well but Nenagh had so much possession and territory that it was only a matter of time before they made it count and their first try came after they won a good turnover in Barnhall’s 22.  Nenagh were patient, working the ball through the phases and then flashing it out to Willie Coffey on the wing who made good ground down the right touch line.  Lemeki Vaipulu took scrum half Eoin Gardiner’s pass on the move and straightened well to allow Gardiner to get the ball out quick and it went through the hands of Mike Fogarty and Anthony Kavanagh before Dan Fogarty flicked it on expertly to Mark Doyle to finish a superb team try in the left hand corner.  Dan Fogarty added another penalty a few minutes later to leave the half time score at NUIM Barnhall 0-14 Nenagh Ormond.

Barnhall were never going to lie down though and they had a good spell of possession at the start of the second half.  They got on the scoreboard with a penalty after which possession was back and forth for a while.  Barnhall put Nenagh under pressure in their own half for some time but the defence held and when Nenagh turned the ball over it seemed the danger was averted.  However, a loose pass gave possession back to Barnhall and they scored a few phases later to come back to within 6 points.

It was the reliable boot of Dan Fogarty that took the gap out to two scores again when he kicked his fourth penalty of the game but Barnhall put on the pressure again after this, working their way back into Nenagh’s 22 and pounding the defensive line.  Mike Fogarty put an end to their attack when he read a pass beautifully, intercepted and broke through before drawing the covering defender and passing to Mark Doyle.  Doyle broke down the middle of the pitch but was chased down and tackled on the Barnhall 22.  The Nenagh support was right behind him though and he offloaded to Eoin Gardiner who raced over the line to score.  Dan Fogarty added the extras for Nenagh to pull away and, although Barnhall did kick another penalty, Nenagh Ormond were convincing winners by 24 points to 11.

Next up for Nenagh Ormond is their last game of the current AIL season when they host Rainey Old Boys at home on Saturday, April 11th, at 2.30pm.  This will be another must-win game and your support will be needed so come on out and cheer on the team on Saturday week!

Under 14’s claim League and Cup Double!
Nenagh Ormond 5 – Galbally 0

The Nenagh Under 14 team brought their season to a close with a hard fought victory in the East Munster Cup final. The win over Galbally at Clanwilliam Park on Sunday gave them a remarkable league and Cup double. The conditions on the day were dreadful with a gale force wind blowing down the pitch. Nenagh won the toss and chose to play with the wind in the first half.

From the outset the Nenagh forwards looked really up for it and gave Galbally no chance to settle into the match. After a good deal of Nenagh pressure and some hard rucking by the Nenagh forwards they got themselves into the Galbally twenty two and following a scrum near the Galbally line Nenagh worked a well rehearsed back row move to put Kian O’Kelly in for the opening score of the game. The conversion was narrowly missed by Jack Moran. From the restart Galbally won the ball and drove up the field into Nenagh’s twenty two. It was now the turn of Nenagh to defend and the Nenagh back row of Kian O’Kelly, Jack O’Keeffe and Dylan Murphy put in some great tackles and kept the Galbally forwards at bay.

With the weather conditions the way they were the lineouts were a bit of a lottery. However, Nenagh won a lineout on their own five metre line and the tight five lead by Luke Connolly and Oisín Webb and supported by Eoghan Slevin, Danny O’Connor and Ruan O’Hanluain drove with the ball up to the twenty two. The ball was then passed to centre Jack Moran who put in a great relieving kick down to the Galbally ten metre line. Nenagh then won another good lineout and this time released their back line with scrum half James Ferris passing to out half Owen Farrell who in turn passed to centre Jack Moran on a crash ball move. However, Galbally managed to turn the ball over in the ruck and again ran the ball back into Nenagh’s half. The game was very evenly balanced throughout the first half and at half time the score line of 5 - 0 showed how tight the game was.

After the interval Galbally, now playing with an ever increasing wind behind them, started to exert some forward pressure on Nenagh and for the first six or seven minutes of the second half continued to drive towards the Nenagh line. The Nenagh players continued to tackle well and hold Galbally out. In the first half Nenagh found it hard to keep the ball in hand when passing but now playing into a very strong head wind they knew that their passing had to be more accurate and sharper and on a number of occasions this Nenagh team, who normally play a very open and expansive game, got the ball out to second centre Roan Harte-Murphy and wingers Peter Rainsford and Matthew Hodgins who made good inroads into the Galbally half of the field.

However, none of this good passing allowed Nenagh to get near the Galbally line and it was the large Galbally forwards who started to drive their team down the field and on a couple of occasions the Galbally backs nearly made it over the Nenagh line. Galbally also resorted to the kicking game but fullback Oisin Larkin fielded these kicks very well. This Nenagh team has not lost a match all season and for the last five minutes of the game they were under extreme pressure from Galbally but the never say die attitude of these young Nenagh players came to the fore and every one of them tackled as if their lives depended on it which allowed them to hold out for a very hard fought 5 – 0 win.

This victory completes a memorable season for this Under 14 team with a remarkable league and cup double. After the match the Nenagh captain Jack O’Keeffe was presented with the East Munster Under 14 Cup by our own Munster representative Mike Donovan.

We would like to thank all parents and the huge number of Nenagh Ormond members and supporters including the President, Vice President and a number of committee members who travelled to Tipperary Town to cheer our players on to fantastic victory. The Nenagh support appeared to be far greater in numbers than those who travelled from Galbally just down the road. We would also like to thank everybody who helped out in the clubhouse in Lisatunny when the team returned for the victory celebrations. There will be a formal presentation of medals to the team at Nenagh’s final AIL league match on Saturday the 11th of April.

Garryowen Cup
Nenagh Seconds 5-19 Cashel

Nenagh Seconds were at home to Cashel in the Garryowen Cup last Sunday afternoon.  Nenagh started well, putting pressure on Cashel from the start and they had the lion’s share of the possession, most of it inside the Cashel half, for the first ten minutes.  However, Nenagh could not get through the defence and Cashel weathered the storm before regaining possession and working their way up the pitch courtesy of two penalties.

Nenagh were under pressure and carried over the try line before touching down, giving Cashel a scrum five metres out.  A couple of phases later they set up a strong maul which was brought to ground illegally by Nenagh and the referee awarded a penalty try.  Neither side added more points to the scoreboard in the first half, although Nenagh did have several good periods of play in Cashel territory, and the score at half time remained Nenagh Ormond 0-7 Cashel.

Nenagh did get on the scoreboard early in the second half after some good forward play allowed them to retain possession and put on the pressure in the Cashel 22.  It was a fumble from Nenagh which Kevin O’Gorman tidied up and flashed out to the backs that eventually resulted in their only try of the game.  The ball was passed out to Eddie Gleeson who ran wide first and then, as the covering defenders drifted out to cover the men outside him, he straightened up and went through them to touch down.

This left Nenagh within two points and they worked hard in this period to score again first.  However, Cashel got possession just inside the Nenagh half and they broke through the middle, then drawing and passing to score near the posts and slot the conversion.  At 5-14, Nenagh never gave up but Cashel came back at them again in the final minutes and scored out wide to leave the final score at Nenagh Ormond 5-19 Cashel.

Nenagh Seconds resume their Munster Junior Plate campaign this weekend with a home fixture against Abbeyfeale.  Please see our website, Facebook page & Twitter for fixture details.

Mini Rugby End of Season

We have come to the end of our 2014/15 season and the Mini Coordinator Martin Brislane would like to thank everyone who made it such an enjoyable experience.  First of all Paul Collins, our youth officer, for putting the structures in place and convincing us to move training from Thursday nights in Tyone to Sunday mornings in Lisatunny.  This has proved to be a huge success and a better experience for children and parents alike.

To all our coaches who give of their time and make the sacrifices in their own busy schedules to guide the players on the rugby pathway.  To the parents for your support all season whether it be fundraising or helping out on those very busy home blitz mornings.  There are too many to be named but you are all very much appreciated.  To both the Juvenile and Senior Committees for your support and help all season.  To Ballymackey F.C. for making their all-weather pitch available to us for three months which meant we lost no Sunday to the weather.  To our PRO Eithne Darcy who kept all our activities in the public eye whether through social media or in the Guardian.

Last of all and most importantly to all our players who arrived in such huge numbers every Sunday morning.  We hope that you all enjoyed the mini rugby experience and hope to see everyone back again in September.

Under 11’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 11’s played their last match of the season at home against a strong Clanwilliam side in Lisatunny on Sunday last.  Conditions were blustery and the ground was soft underfoot but both teams game an excellent display of committed rugby.  The game was played in three ten minute segments and Clanwilliam started strongly, scoring two tries in the first period.

Nenagh played an expansive game in the difficult conditions with excellent passing but a couple of missed tackles allowed Clanwilliam to get over.  They scored a third try in the second period and Nenagh had an uphill battle but a tremendous third stanza saw Nenagh score two very good tries through Joseph Coffey and a cracker near the end from Sean O’Callaghan.  In the last play Nenagh broke downfield and almost snatched a draw.

The team developed very well during the year and we had a few new players who progressed very well, as well as the more experienced guys who have been there since Under 7’s.  The team trained very well, maybe did not always play the matches to the same standard but definitely improved over the course of the year.  Joseph Coffey was top try scorer for the season, Jamie Coyne was the tackler of the year and Joe Shanahan definitely won the prize for most yards after the tackle!

All the players were presented with a medal for their performances during the year.  The players were a credit to their parents and very well behaved throughout the year and we look forward to seeing them in September for the new season, as they progress to Under 12.

A special thanks to coaches Kieran Kyne, Eoin O’Callaghan and Johnny Moylan for their assistance during the season.  Also, a special word of thanks to the parents for their support and assistance with lifts, food after matches etc, without this support it would make the job much more difficult.

Munster rugby have a summer camp on in the club during the school holidays and details are on their website, it is a great opportunity to learn from experienced coaches when the weather is a bit better!.

Under 7’s

We had 15 players for the Under 7’s blitz against Clanwilliam on Sunday.  We were able to field two NORFC teams who played against two Clanwilliam teams.  It was great to see the Mini Rugby Stage 1 key elements which have been developed over the season on display.  We had players going forward, support and continuity (keeping the ball) all evident on the day.  Both games finished up all level.

These young rugby players have received guidance on players around the ball and players in the space and they have all learned a lot this season. The most important part is that they tell us that they had great fun over the season.

We had a good retention of players who were introduced to the game in August 2014, 15 on Sunday morning plus 4 away on the day, and we hope to see you all again in September.
