Nenagh Ormond Senior XV hope to continue their string of victories this Saturday when they travel North to Queens University for the next round of AIL action. Kick off at 2.30pm.

Nenagh/Shannon Ladies 34-8 Ballincollig

Nenagh/Shannon Ladies welcomed Cork side Ballincollig to Lisatunny on Sunday last. The Nenagh and Limerick teams are really gelling well and have had good results since they joined together after the Christmas break. Sunday was another step forward for the girls with a fantastic six-try performance earning them a place in the semi-final of the Munster Women’s Bowl Competition.

Nenagh/Shannon went on the attack straight from the kick off, retaining possession well and making their way into the Ballincollig half where they earned a penalty. Scrum half Becca O’Shea took a quick tap and, after some good forward carries the ball came out to first centre Valerie Power. Power had options outside her but backed herself, breaking through from outside the 22 and shrugging off the cover defence to score. Sarah Cullinan added the extras to put Nenagh ahead by seven points.

With just over ten minutes gone, Nenagh/Shannon scored again when a lineout in the Ballincollig 22 gave them a good attacking platform. After a solid maul gained good ground, hooker Tracy Lawlor peeled off the back, running straight and hard and sucking in defenders. O’Shea was quick to get the ball out to prop Jessie Lee who powered over for the try. Ballincollig did begin to come into the game more in the second quarter but a penalty was the only score they managed leaving the half-time score at 12-3.

Nenagh/Shannon went on the attack again straight away in the second half with some good, aggressive carries gaining them ground. Prop Nicolette Finn, who had been causing problems for the Ballincollig defence throughout the match, crashed through for the home side’s third try. The fourth try came after a penalty hit the posts and Ballincollig fumbled the ball in their own dead ball area, giving Nenagh/Shannon the five-metre scrum. They got the ball quickly to the back where Number 8 Karen Harney picked and ran through the defenders to score. Cullinan converted to leave the score at 24-3.

A great break from fullback Laura Hanrahan soon after brought Nenagh/Shannon back up the pitch where they eventually won a five metre lineout. Nicolette Finn peeled off the maul and set the ball up for Becca O’Shea to snipe around the side of the ruck and score. Credit to Ballincollig, at 29-3 down they never gave up and came back with a good try of their own but Nenagh/Shannon weren’t done and they scored a fine try in the last five minutes when Finn again carried strongly before the ball went through the hands of Power and Sandra Williams for Mary Kate Moloney to score in the corner and leave the final score at 34-8.

Well done to Nicolette Finn whose strong carrying and hard work off the ball won her player of the match. The girls return to League action next Sunday where they again face Ballincollig but this time the Cork side will have home advantage. Kick off at 1pm.

Team: Laura Hanrahan, Therese Nolan, Sandra Williams, Valerie Power, Aoife Meaney, Sarah Cullinan, Becca O’Shea, Nicolette Finn, Tracy Lawlor, Jessie Lee, Nicola Larkin, Maria Butler, Katie McCloskey, Mary Kate Moloney, Karen Harney. Rep: Grace Donovan.

Ballina/Killaloe 34-5 Under 13s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s travelled to Clarisford Park in Killaloe on Sunday morning for a friendly and gave game time to 26 players. We struggled against a fine, skilful home team who were far more clinical with ball in hand and, with a number of missed tackles from the Nenagh side, six tries were scored against us from distance.

While Ballymackey’s all-weather pitch has been great for training in the bad weather it has meant a serious fall off in match fitness with too many players looking lost on the full size pitch. However, Nenagh did show a glimpse of what they are capable of when Sonny Dower made a great break and DJ McGrath worked hard to be there in support and to score our only try of the day.

A big improvement will be needed going into the last couple of weeks of the season with a League semi-final possibly next Sunday week and the Cup competition being played off after the League finishes. There is plenty to be done but this group have never shied away from hard work and are sure to step up to the mark in the next few weeks.

Mini Rugby

It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Martin Ferncombe, Mini Rugby Co-Ordinator with Cashel RFC. Our Minis had only travelled to Cashel RFC on 14th February for a blitz that Martin had organised. In 2015 he organised three mini rugby blitzes with Nenagh Ormond RFC. Our condolences go to his family and friends and to all at Cashel RFC. May he rest in peace.
