Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 19/10/2015

Nenagh Ormond Under 10s enjoyed a great morning of rugby in Roscrea on Sunday.

Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Nenagh Ormond 12-20 Galway Corinthians

Nenagh Ormond faced Galway Corinthians last Saturday in Lisatunny.  Corinthians started strongly, putting Nenagh under pressure from the kick off.  The Nenagh defence took up where it left off the previous week and weathered the storm well for the first five minutes.  However, eventually Corinthians started to stretch the defence and won a penalty for a high tackle which their fullback Simon Keller slotted comfortably to open the scoring.  Nenagh came back and had their own penalty attempt just minutes later when Corinthians failed to release after the tackle but unfortunately it went wide, as did an attempted drop kick shortly after.

Soon after Nenaghconceded a penalty for holding on which Corinthians kicked to touch to give them a lineout on Nenagh’s 10 metre line.  Nenagh found themselves under huge pressure again as waves of Corinthian players ran hard at them.  They moved the ball from left to right and made their way to Nenagh’s 22 where, completely against the run of play, Nenagh’s Derek Corcoran intercepted the ball and took off.  Corcoran’s pace ensured that none of the chasing Corinthian players caught him and he touched down under the posts.  Michael Walsh slotted the conversion and Nenagh were ahead 7-3 after fifteen minutes despite having spent the majority of the match so far defending.

However, Corinthians continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides and their dominance eventually told in the last ten minutes of the half when they gained a foothold in Nenagh’s 22 and patiently worked through the phases, stretching the Nenagh defence left and right before number 10 James Proctor broke through two attempted tackles to score.  Keller kicked the conversion to put the visitors ahead by 10 points to 7 at half time.

The second half started with a back and forth between the two teams where both conceded a number of penalties and turnovers.  Corinthians then took control and had the throw in to a lineout on the Nenagh 10 metre line.  The ball was popped down to prop Mark Byrne who made good ground.  Corinthians recycled and passed out to number 8 EnelikoFa’atau who straightened the line well giving quick ball out to winger Dave McDermott to score in the corner.

Nenagh’s response was swift when Corinthians knocked on from the kick off.  Anthony Kavanagh was up fast and kicked the ball on twice before being impeded by a player on the ground just seven or eight metres from the try line.  Unfortunately the referee did not see this infringement but Corinthians had knocked on again giving Nenagh a 5 metre scrum.  The forwards did great work to push the Corinthian pack back giving LemekiVaipulu a great platform.  He picked from the back, drew the defender and passed to Mike Fogarty.  The ball then went through the hands of Willie O’Connor to EathonMoloney who finished well in the corner.

With the score now at 12-15, Nenagh were right in the game but with 20 minutes to go the punishing first half began to catch up with them.  Corinthians came back at Nenagh with renewed determination and, after super defence had kept them out for some time, Corinthians won a penalty.  They spotted that Nenagh were disorganised and not back ten metres and they took a quick tap and raced in to score, leaving Nenagh trailing by eight points.

Credit to Nenagh, they worked hard for the remainder of the match keeping out several dangerous attacks by Corinthians and even holding them up over the try line on one occasion.  They had a number of chances themselves but Corinthians held firm and they didn’t manage the score that would have given them a losing bonus point.

Nenagh Ormond Team: Michael Walsh, DarraghHassey, Derek Corcoran, Willie O’Connor, EathonMoloney, Mike Fogarty, Eoin Gardiner, Conor Brislane, Peter O’Connor, John Hayes, Kevin O’Gorman, Kevin O’Flaherty, Kevin Seymour, Anthony Kavanagh, LemekiVaipulu.  Reps: John Healy, Fergal Brislane, Mark Griffin, Jack Molamphy, John O’Flaherty.

Under 11s

Last Sunday we travelled to Roscrea to take on the home side.  In all eighteen Under 11 players made the journey.  The home side had only eight players so we played three games against the same opposition, revolving our players to ensure that everyone got as much game time as possible.

We had a number of players making their debut, Aaron, Edan, Keelin and Amy and all performed well.  The highlight of the day was a couple of tries scored by the fast running Amy.

We scored lots of tries and it was a very enjoyable run out. Our thanks to Roscrea RFC for the invitation and the hospitality afterwards. Our thanks also to all the parents who made the journey.  Training continues every Sunday morning at 10am and new players are always welcome.

Under 10s

The NenaghUnder10 team travelled away to Roscrea to play a very competitive match.  There was some very courageous tackling on the Nenagh team from both male and female members of the squad, especially a memorable tackle from Niall Connolly. There was some great running and passing on display from both teams and we look forward to a return match in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to Roscrea for hosting and thanks to all the parents who travelled.

Under 9s

Nenagh Ormond Under 9’s fielded two teams plus subs against Roscrea on Sunday, with a total of 25 players travelling.  We played two keenly contested matches against the hosts.

The lads are progressing well, with skills picked up in training evident in matches.
Well done to all the players and parents who travelled, and also to Roscrea R.F.C. for their hospitality.

Training continues next Sunday in Lisatunny and our next Blitz is planned for Sunday week, November 1st.

Under 7s

Nenagh Ormond Under 7s played Roscrea in the non-contact game of Leprechaun Rugby where the emphasis is on enjoyment and participation for all.  Leprechaun Rugby has been developed to introduce Rugby Union to young players new to the game.  The non-tackling and soft contact nature of Leprechaun Rugby contains all the running and handling skills of Rugby Union.

To tag, a player must contact the ball carrier with two hands (one at each side of the hips).  The ball carrier must then (immediately) pass backwards or turn and present the ball to a support player.  Nenagh had a squad of 15 players while Roscrea had 11 players. All squad players got equal game time.

Nenagh Ormond's tries in the first half were by Charlie Kennedy and Jack Kennedy. Roscrea were able to level the game by half-time with tries from Tirnna Conlon and Annabel Hayes.  Soon into the second half, Tirnna Conlon scored again and this was followed by tries from Cormack Kennedy and Cullin O'Brien from Nenagh Ormond.

Roscrea's CalemMolony made a great run to score a try to level the score again. Roscrea looked like going ahead near the final minutes of the game when again CalemMolony made a run along the touchline, only to be tagged by Nenagh Ormond's Conor O'Brien.

There was a great sense of enjoyment from all the players. This excitement was helped by the anticipation of Ireland's World Cup match with Argentina on the same day.  Thanks to Roscrea for hosting and to all the parents who travelled.
