Under 14 East Munster Cup Final
Under 14s 10-11 Waterpark

On Sunday morning Nenagh Ormond travelled to Kilfeacle to play Waterpark in the final of the Under 14 East Munster Cup. Having been delayed by two weeks because of the weather, Waterpark decided to delay the kick off by a further twenty minutes by not having their paperwork in order. When the match eventually started Nenagh started the better team and enjoyed the majority of possession in the early stages. David O Sullivan and Dylan Murphy appeared to score tries but the referee failed to award either of them.

Waterpark’s big forwards started to carry more ball and when Nenagh were penalised at a ruck Waterpark kicked the penalty to open the scoring. Back came Nenagh and they laid siege to the Waterpark tryline. James Meagher powered over from close range but again the try was not awarded. Eventually Nenagh were rewarded when Liam King kicked ahead and gathered his own kick to score and Nenagh deservedly led 5 -3 at half time.

Waterpark attacked from the start of the second half but Nenagh refused to give an inch and drove Waterpark back at every opportunity. With the game in the balance Nenagh took control and after some great handling down the blindside Liam King scored his second try. Hugh Guest’s conversion from the touchline came back off the crossbar to leave the score at 10 -3 to Nenagh. From the kick off Nenagh failed to clear their lines and were penalised at a ruck and Waterpark converted to leave the score at 10-6.

Against the run of play Waterpark were awarded a penalty with 7 minutes remaining and scored in the corner to edge in front. So, despite playing the better rugby,Nenagh now trailed. Great credit must go to all the players for their response as they pummelled the Waterpark tryline and appeared to score a try but again the referee didn’t award it. The match ended like it started - in a farce - as Waterpark continuously gave away penalties without any yellow cards being awarded. It finished 11 – 10 to Waterpark.

Despite this result, the players should be really proud of what they have achieved this season; more than 40 training sessions, 20 matches, reaching the league and cup final, some brilliant tries and memorable wins.

Under 16 East Munster Cup Semi-Final
Under 16s3-7 Waterpark

Nenagh Ormond Under16s entertained recently crowned Munster U16 champions Waterpark in their weather delayed East Munster cup semi-final on Saturday morning in Lisatunny.  Conditions were pretty much ideal for open rugby and both sides obliged by playing an open brand of rugby that kept the sizeable crowd entertained throughout.  In the early stages both backlines worked well to create space out wide and while several line breaks were made, the covering defences held firm.  Halfway through the first half a delicate chip over the top by Waterpark was raced on to by their centres and a kindly bounce facilitated the touchdown under the posts.  The extras were added giving Waterpark a 7-0 lead.

Nenagh responded well and took the game back into Waterpark territory.  Shortly before half time Eamon Hough got the ball in space on the wing and raced in touching down in the corner but was adjudged to have knocked the ball on in grounding it and Waterpark’s line survived.  Shortly after Nenagh thought they were in again in the same corner from a lineout but this time an obstruction ruled out any score and the half ended at 7-0.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first with both sides testing each other.  The uncompromising and tough nature of the game meant a lot of stoppages for injury but despite the stop start nature of the half the crowd were still held enthralled.  Half way through Nenagh got a penalty in front of the posts and Conor O’Brien duly obliged to make the score 7-3.  Nenagh continued to press and a strong break by Evan Murphy saw him tackled just short of the Waterpark line.  Nenagh continued to force Waterpark back and late in injury time thought they had the winning score but with so many bodies on top of the ball the referee was unable to see a grounding and correctly called for a five metre scrum.  Nenagh were unable to score from the back of the scrum and after 14 minutes of injury time the referee blew the final whistle.

While the season has ended for our U16s without any silverware, the boys can be extremely proud of the progress they have made over the season.  They now know they can match the best at the top level and next season we will look to push on further.  Our Under 15s are still in the hunt in North Munster for silverware.  They have a semi-final to look forward to and will continue to train on Tuesday nights in Tyone at 7pm.  If any of the Under 16s wish to come along and train with them we would be delighted to see them.

Team: Michael Bourke, Jack Dunne, Luke Connolly, RuanO’Hanluain, Michael Kennedy, Stephen Harding, Orrin Moore, Jack O’Keefe, Darragh Flannery, Ben Duff, Eamon Hough, Evan Murphy, Colum Moylan, Eddie O’Dwyer, Conor O’Brien, John Spillane, Nathan Deely-O’Meara, Daniel Molamphy, Ronan Kelly, Kian O’Kelly.

Under 13s 5-5 Ennis

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s played Ennis on Monday week last in Lisatunny in the first round of the North Munster Cup. Ennis, who had fielded two teams in the league, decided to amalgamate and enter one very strong team in this competition.  Their A team had beaten us by 40 plus points in November in the league so they landed in a very confident mood.

However, the Nenagh lads were not going to roll over and from the kick off took the game to Ennis. The first ten minutes saw all the play around the Ennis 22m line. Wave after wave of attack was held out and when Ennis kicked out of defence Paul Seymour, back after his injury, was sure under the high ball and ran back strongly on a number of occasions.  Ennis lifted the siege to keep their try line intact and it was our turn to defend.  We were lucky to hold out on a number of occasions with a dropped pass or a last ditch tackle saving the day.

Eventually after a scrum wide out right on our 22, Ennis ran a slick back line move and scored in the opposite corner.  The conversion was missed. Soon afterwards John Brislane pounced on a loose ball near halfway and broke clear only to be tackled inches from the line.  A penalty resulted at the breakdown which we tapped and unfortunately the ball was eventually knocked on and the half time score remained at 5-0 to Ennis.

The start of the second half saw us under enormous pressure with ten minutes spent on our own line in which time Ennis got over but were held up and were tackled into touch at the corner flag. We were also caught in possession behind our own line but we never panicked and when they knocked on in the act of scoring our lads decided it was time to play the game somewhere else. From the resulting scrum five metres from our own line, John Brislane picked and ran hard gaining 15 metres.  With his pack winning quick ruck ball James Finn put a lovely kick in behind the winger who lost it in flight and it bounced up lovely for the oncoming Paul Seymour who ran half the pitch to score and bring the game level.

We tried everything for the rest of the game to find a winning score but it just wasn't to be and Ennis went through on the first try scored rule which applies at this level. So that brings us to the end of our rugby season and a great journey it has been for this team who have improved with every outing since September, playing 25 games and developing each week as rugby players.  The great Scottish and Lions coach Jim Telfer once said there are two types of rugby player, the honest rugby player and the other rugby players and this team is blessed with an abundance of honest rugby players. They give everything and never give up!

Under 11s v Kilkenny RFC
End of Season Trip

Last Sunday 27 players travelled to Kilkenny for our end of season day out.  Firstly we played two matches against a very competitive Kilkenny RFC side. On a glorious dry day for rugby both of our teams performed very well, scoring lots of tries, tackling strongly, and generally playing well.  Our rugby has improved so much over the season, and great credit is due to our young players and of course our coaching staff.

We then headed to Kilkenny Activity Centre for two hours of fun and muck.  The kids had such a great time there and it is so rewarding for the coaching staff to see our young players really enjoy a good day out, have fun and end our season on a positive note.  Our thanks again to Fogarty Concrete for their kind sponsorship of this event.

As our season ends a sincere thanks to all our parents, without whose support we couldn't operate, thanks to the coaches who give up their time and a huge thanks to all our young players who come in such numbers every week.  Enjoy the summer off and we hope to see you all in September.
